Title: Best GOMP Ever!
Post by: jed on May 07, 2008, 10:15:42 AM
Listening to the archives at work I came across an amazing call.  It is perfect in every way, Tom sings, the caller continues down a path of hitting every wrong button, and Tom's anger builds to a hilarious GOMP+How Dare You! crescendo. Check it out. (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=7759&archive=7708&starttime=1:14:56)

I like how the guy's road trip involved deep discussions about the existence of evil. Sounds exciting.

I think my favorite GOMPs are when Tom is extremely indulgent and they just keep digging themselves in deeper and deeper (like the I'm Not There caller).  Slow build comedy triumphs every time.

Does it technically count as a GOMP if the caller is actually ghosted?

Purists say no. It's like the %^&*^$$&$^%$#&*^* designated hitter rule.

I want more ghosts! (used sparingly)  I just picture the soul leaving the caller's body and floating off into the netherworld.

i really love the one from when he comes back from his kidney stone stuff and that guy tells him maybe he came back to early.  classic.

also, that other nominee this year...hesh or something?  where he offers him the job of posting summaries after each show?

or of course the one that's in the opening thing that he did to that kid.

oh, oh!  and when he gomp'd that kid from drillbit taylor.  that was pretty funny too.

This call from May 25, 2004  (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=11394&archive=13516&starttime=00:34:00) is probably too long for the opening of the show but I love it (maybe someone could cut it down to the last minute and make it an mp3 of it?). Tom keeps a Harvard snob on the line for over seven minutes, relating his hard knock story as a Southie ending in dramatic GOMP Will Hunting.

Is there any consensus on what the literal Best Gomp Ever might be? A top 10? Is this something we should embark upon?

I think we all need to get cracking on isolating GOMPs for show intros.  I often hear really good ones on the archives that I then forget to extract.
