Title: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - 3rd Season

It just gets darker and better with each season. Loving it.

(I don't have cable so I'm always late to the party, digging up episodes online)

I've only seen half of the first season, but the "pick a controversial topic and make that the episodes theme" struck me as really lazy. Should I keep watching or does it get better?

Yes. It gets better. It's a bit hit-or-miss, but season 3 had at least 2 or 3 total killer episodes.

A good friend characterized the show as too "kevin smith-y" which I can see, but disagree with.

The funny thing is, it is kind of lazy. But it's in keeping with the whole concept of four incompetent slacker friends. It's got funny dialogue and a low-budget feel which might seem Kevin Smith-y on the surface, but somehow, they seem to be doing it right where Smith did it oh so wrong.

It gets better.

Yeah - the mafia two-parter from Season 3 is excellent.

I was really, REALLY into this show for the first two seasons, but I'm just not that fired up for some reason.

I enjoyed season 3.  It's not the greatest show ever, but it seems like they have so much fun while making it, which kind of shows through and makes me have fun.  I don't know.

Exactly. It also helps to know that the actor/writers are all best friends in real life and that despite their evil self-serving characters, they all seem like they'd be cool and likable and funny. All their facial expressions and timing are pretty good.

It's more like Seinfeld, structurally. But more base.

by the way, I never watched Arrested Development until I saw it on the boat and I think I'm going to have to buy the box sets.  How does a show that good get cancelled?  People are idiots.

I'm pro-It's Always Sunny.... What prevents the show from being "Kevin Smith-y" is the fact that it has a moral compass (not to mention the fact that the writers/actors deliver dialogue that sounds like actual conversation, even at its most idiotic...). The characters are self-centered, often offensive, often loathsome, etc., but their baggage always has consequences, and they're likeable in spite of their glaring flaws. It's sharp, funny shit. I'm looking forward to the fourth season.

Someone really needs to convince me to like this show.  I hate being a spoilsport about comedy, but man this show did not cut it for me.

A friend tried to turn me onto it and I watched a whole episode, and I hated it it.  There were some almost funny moments, but I just can't stand that quick, back and forth totally fake banter.  Banter banter banter.

Yeah, I really like this show. It's not deep by any means, but it's fun. Good for sick days and stuff. I'm a fan.

It's a great show! They're inflammatory, not just for the sake of being inflamatory, but for the sake of actual situational humor. It sounds destined to fail in the premise, but it works so well!

September 18. It was also reported that FX has ordered 39 additional episodes of the series, on top of the 13 being developed for Season 4. I cannot wait!
