Title: Tom Laffs
Post by: DanSF on October 20, 2006, 06:25:52 PM
It cracks me up when Tom loses it mid bit.  I think the first conversation with Marky Ramone is the funniest.  Marky tells him he's gonna (gawna) beat out the intro to Teenage Lobotomy on his butt...his naked butt, and Tom lost it, had to go off mic for a second and compose himself.  It also happened during the first trial of Petey when he was pretending to be listeners voting guilty.  John lost it when, as Gene Simmons, Tom had him repeat the word, "Fontasy", over and over.  You can actually hear the smile on his face.  That stuff cracks me up.

Tom didn't really "lose it", but Keith Kincaid got him pretty good when he reveals that Bryce caught the fox in the woods.  The closest JW ever came to totally losing it is Montgomery Davies.

The best one that stands out in my memory is the first time Zeph Marshack called in. It sounded as if Jon spontaneously pulled this character out of his ass during the whole Poster Children debacle, and surprised Tom when he called in as the character. One of the rare times when Tom totally "lost it" during a bit.

This is why the Poster Children shows killed. Between Zeph and "the Soaker," they were masterpieces of spontaneity.

Could someone tell me the first time that Zeph calls in? I only heard the september 26th show where it seemed like he returned? Sorry, I'm kind of a new fan still....still catching up.

I can't seem to find their appearances either, could someone help me out? Tom didn't really "lose it", but Keith Kincaid got him pretty good when he reveals that Bryce caught the fox in the woods.  The closest JW ever came to totally losing it is Montgomery Davies.

I can't seem to find these guys either. Could someone help me out? It sounds really funny. Sorry again for my ignorance.

I'm pretty sure the first Zeph call was on the 2/7/06 show, but it was very brief.  His first extended call was on 2/14/06 during the Poster Children segment.  It starts at approx. 1:12.

Keith Kincaid =  9/19/06 show, starts at approx. 1:10.

Montgomery Davies = 7/11/06 show, starts at approx. 2:11.

I remember Tom had to go off mic when that guy who was into slapfighting talked about how his face was like a catcher's mitt and that he "oiled it with catcher's mitt oil."

Tom has also said that gratuitous use of the word "son" is an attempt to crack up the other side. Sure enough, when JW uses it, you can often hear Tom hesitate for a second.

I think I've found the ultimate "Tom Laffs" bit.

Go listen to the November 29, 2005 "Jimmy Crespo" bit...a completely improvised Wurster character, and you can hear Tom literally laffing on the floor throughout the entire bit.

Petey 4.0 and Zachary B are easy to find here:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/BS

Nov. 1/05 for Petey 4.0
Nov. 28/00, Apr.3/01 + June 20/06 for Zachary.

I would be surprised if Jon had anything to do with Petey 4.0 -- to me, that sounded like a completely unplanned surprise for Tom -- and it was hilarious which explains why he is laughing so much!  And that guy (and his faffer) should phone back, at the very least to annoy Petey.

Jon was Petey from the future from another episode, though.

Tom cracked himself up pretty good on last night's show. Check it out. It's at the 44:12 mark. You have to listen past Michael K. from the Cynics, but you can hear him losing it in the background after he mentions the Super Dave Osborne wig exhibit coming to the Warhol museum.

I'm fairly new to the show so I'm not sure I can tell the difference between real Tom laughter and the fake, mocking kind, but the laugh when last night's crazy caller (the guy who called three times, I can't remember his name) suggested that poetic justice for Lindsey Lohan is to be chauffeured by Ted Kennedy sounded real to me.

2 second pause then Tom completely loses it for 10 seconds with what I can only describe as pure glee at the perfection of the timing of the stealth gomp

I love when JW seemingly tries to put Tom on the spot, causing him to crack up. Two favorites (which may or may not count as crack-ups):

During the Dr. Dandy Dan Dannington call, at about 6 minutes in, Dannington drops an obscure music ref, and Tom nearly loses it (it sounds "real"). (That call happens to be featured in this week's Best Show Vault (http://bestshowvault.blogspot.com) update.)

At the near-end of Matthew Tompkins' call about The Shout! Network's new spring lineup, when Tompkins mentions The Van Morrison Variety Two Hours, Tom almost breaks down laughing. I love that moment.

Tom's best full-on fake laugh:  August 24, 2004 at the 54:50 mark.  Tom interviews Bernie Cohen, author of the book, The Lazy Person's Guide To Life.  That's all I'm going to say.

I loved his treatment of that *zany* guy who phoned last week to serve some poetic justice to the "DWI" celebrities. That call was just weird.

CORRECTION: THOSE calls were just weird.

The August 24th fake laugh is outstanding - thank you for mentioning that.

Another favorite is the August 31, 2004 Elle Girl Magazine interview that Mrs. Jarvis Cocker mentioned...but after that interview is finished, Tom continues in the radio voice and has a chat with a guy who won free tickets to "Two Lane Blacktop" at BAM, and can't get in. Maybe someone has already mentioned this, but there's another amazing fake laugh in there...for some reason, that call makes my day every time I listen to it. I think I was convulsing uncontrollably at my desk the first time I heard it and wiping tears from my eyes. Maybe I was just exhausted? The call starts at about 1:02:33.

That show was the first I ever listened to, chosen at random from the archive when I decided to take the plunge.  Not knowing, of course, that the voice and interviewing style were put on, I hated Tom at first, which depressed me hugely, since I'd just finished all the SSD archives and was looking for more funny talk to while away the hours.  Luckily, curiosity about the Gorch and Skag Winesack, mystification over the Purple Shirt/Officer Tom feud, and Rick Warren's odd reminiscences were enough to make me stick it out.  Thank heaven, eh?

That's a favorite moment of mine as well, Dorvid. Not only because of the Stroszek quote, but because Tom reversed his decision and gomped the caller right after the caller gave me a big, "Yay, Mike!" after I gave his quote the thumb's up. I've already listened to it several times. It's right up there with the Super Dave wigs moment and the Cowboy Star review for my go to moment for a quick laugh.

I was just listening to the first Zeph call and at the very end, when Tom is asking Zeph to spell his name, JW totally cracks. Tom does a good job of covering it up because he's laughing himself, but that's the only time I've ever actually heard JW laugh during a call. Judge Montgomery Davies is close but he manages to cut himself off before he starts laughing.

On second listen it's scary how much that caller sounds like me, at least for that portion of the call. (For reference if you don't know, I'm Nate from St. Paul, who calls in about that Cook's Revenge thing a little while later.)

That Truck Nuts laff was great. Also, I had to look up what Truck Nuts even were, to my horror.

Here's a funny article excerpt, but be warned: If you follow the link, there will be JPEGs.

http://jalopnik.com/382185/truck-nutz-now-fineable-in-florida-one-state-senator-admits-guilt

The infamous Truck Nutz have now been deemed illegal in Florida and are punishable with a measly $60 fine. If you remember, Virginia was working on enacting a similar bill that would make displaying the genitals a misdemeanor punishable with a $250 fine. What makes this even funnier is what some of Florida's senators had to say about the matter, including an admission of guilt by one.

Sen. Jim King, R-Jacksonville, said he had a set on one of his vehicles, which he described as "all pimped out." They are no more than "an expression of truckliness," he said, although he'd acceded to his wife's request to take them off.

... so where does "State Senators who use the phrase 'all pimped out' " fit in the order of things?

Below the word "truckliness," which is near the top.

Agreed!  That would've been the perfect entry for the "Tom's angry repetition of a word" thread, but he couldn't quite bring himself to angrily repeat it.

Hilarious!

That had me crying.

I immediately thought of this thread when I heard his reaction on the podcast

This is a good one from the second half of the six-hour 9/2/03 show when Bryce (the WFMU DJ, not the pothead who lives in the lean-to) didn't show up and Tom spent most of the show calling pay phones. The laugh happens at the end of an hour-long conversation with a guy named Clem and his step-daughter. He gets accidentally disconnected and his horrified reaction turns into hysterical laughter.
