Title: Pitchfork Fest 2008
Post by: Laurie on May 14, 2008, 10:41:58 AM
I'm seriously considering going to this.

I'm probably going to James myself by staying at the James Hotel (http://www.jameshotels.com/). I will be disappointed if my morning wakeup call is not some jackass saying, "You just got Jamesed!"

I love the stuff they're doing Friday night, where Sebadoh/Public Enemy/Mission of Burma are going to play entire records straight through. Did they do that in previous years?

GZA did Liquid Swords, and I think Slint did Spiderland. Not that I saw any of them.

im going to try and make it.  ive never been to chicago but enjoy things from/about chicago on a regular basis.  and ive wanted to go to pitchfork music fest for years.

its cheaper than coachella (which ive skipped for the last 3 years) by a mile.

who else thinks they might make a cameo appearance at pitchfork?

I think one of these bands should get on tour and just play a copy of their record through the PA and just sit there on stage and drink and count money.

Ugh, I blew it big time at the '06 one.  I pretty much went for Yo La Tengo and Os Mutantes.  I got there later in the day, saw Devandra Banhart playing, figured I could miss it as I was starving, so hit the Bell, figuring in some set-up time between shows.

Oh, I see, TWO STAGES.  While I'm munching on a Chalupa, I'm missing half the Tengo show.   :'(

The three-day passes sold old mere hours before I purchased my one-day and two-day passes. BOOOOOO.

It cost $15.00 extra.  :'(

Ahhh, that stinks, Laurie.  I'd LOVE to go to this one, but I'm moving from Chicago (10 days and counting down), and really just don't think I can get back.

That's really frustrating that all days are still available...yet you can't buy them as a package anymore.

But, the price of a CD isn't THAT bad extra (but I know, it's an extra you almost avoided).

(P.S. Know if Jarvis is doing Pulp stuff, or just Jarvis stuff?--I would DIE to hear Different Class performed--though I know that's not happening).

I've gone the last four years and although I always enjoy the music it seems that each year more and more creeps come out.  Still, it can't be beat for the price and you really don't get gouged anywhere like at Lollapalooza or the other huge fests. Water is only $1, there's a nice record/craft fair, and the two main stages stagger performances so you never have to miss a band.

Slint was GREAT despite the fact that it's odd seeing such music being played in the early evening while the sun is still in the sky.  They were one of my favorite bands back in the day but I don't remember ever enjoying their early days shows half as much as I enjoyed the Pitchfork show.  Perhaps they really have developed as artists.

I just flew in from Boston and am at my girlfriend's parents' house in what I like to call "Chicago-Land".  In addition to trying to subjecting her to all this weird music this weekend, I'm nerding out and micro-blogging the festival on my Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/ChrisFollett).

I just got back from tonight's show.  No surprise that the Hold Steady took today's belt in a walk.  Would any FOTs in Chicago for the show tomorrow (or who live here all the time, of course) want to get together for a lunch beforehand?  You know, preferably somewhere near my place?  (Which is not toooo far from the festival grounds).

So I was standing outside of the front gate around 12:30 trying to sell the extra ticket I had since my friend flaked on me and I couldn't figure out why people would dismiss me before I could even ask if they needed an extra. Then I looked down and realized I was wearing my Scar-Face shirt and not my ironic outfit, making me blend in with the professional scalpers.  To make things worse, I was snickered at several times without a single person understanding it. Oh uber-indie kids  ::)

Jay Reatard killed it. The Hold Steady were also very good, reminding me I need to give their new album another listen. Jarvis was pretty damn funny as well.

Did anyone go to the aftershow with Jay and King Khan? I bet that was amazing.

Yeah, I loved his apology for Eric Clapton.* I agree with everyone on the Hold Steady show. For whatever reason, I've never listened to them much, but I may have to start now.

* Not that I was there; I had to settle for the streaming video feed. It improves a little if you go to fullscreen and hook your computer up to your stereo.

It will be hard for anyone to beat the Hold Steady this weekend... they seemed just as at home on the big stage as they would be in a smaller club.

It was a treat to finally see Jarvis after over a decade of being a fan. He was his charismatic self, but his set itself was just okay in my eyes... It was amazing for fans like me, but I'm not sure if the song selection won over any new fans.  'Black Magic' was a barn burner and 'Fat Children' and 'Cunts' were also highlights... though I would have liked to hear a Pulp song or two... but that wish is probably unrealistic.

I'm really impressed with how pleasant the festival is.  The sound is clear, food is relatively good and inexpensive, the crowd is remarkably polite, and you choose can stand right up front in the pit or set up a blanket and relax under the trees and still enjoy yourself.  Way to go, Shovel Festival!

This year left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. I guess it was just a combination of bands I had seen several times with bands I didn't care too much about.

Today was easily the best of the three. Boris were great, although their set was way too short.  The third stage really bummed me out since they were so far behind schedule I missed King Khan and the Shrines for Les Savy Fav.  Ghostface & Raekwon killed but that crowd was way too big for the third stage area.  I was also disappointed that Cut Copy didn't make it, apparently they had flight delays or something?

I'm not sure who Pitchfork can book for next year that'll be a big draw, but a triumphant return from Ted Leo would be a good start...

Yes, Benno and I went, and it was amazing. I have pictures, which I will probably post tomorrow. I was BLOWN AWAY.

Jarvis, OMG, JAAAAAARVIS. It was amazing. Electrifying. Orgasm-inducing. I actually cried. Jarvis and I had A MOMENT. He looked at me. We made eye contact for thirty fucking seconds. He pointed at me, and he sang, "Girls like it too," which is a line cribbed from John Peel's sex advice letter to his brother apparently. Oh, Jarvis, I do. I really, really do like it, but only with Jarvis, so don't get any ideas, fellas. And I wasn't imagining my moment, either! The girl I was talking with about the MAGIC OF JARVIS before his performance turned to me and whispered, "I'm so jealous!" Oh, Jarvis. (If only he had pointed at me when he sang "I wanna be your lover." You bet your buttons I sang along to that one.

Jarvis is my Elvis, Beatles, and Prince, but way better than all three. He's beautiful. A beautiful, pasty English sex-stick. When he said, "It's a bit hot, would you mind if I take off my jacket?" I screamed, along with about a hundred girls and a dozen guys. (Yes, there were other people who screamed, "I LOVE YOU, JARVIS," some of whom were boys or girls with lots of testosterone.) When he deftly shrugged off his jacket with his shoulders, I screamed again. And then I might have shouted, "Take off your shirt!" and there was laughter. (He didn't take off his shirt, but he did take off his tie later!) Oh, there was a moment where the guitarist was having a bit of tuning trouble, and Jarvis helped, and the girl next to me cooed, "Oooohhh, he's helping him!!" I swear to god, us girls go fucking nuts for Jarvis. We love him, it's true.

God, he's so beautiful. I had the best time that night. The next day was pretty amazing, too. I saw the same kid who stood next to me during the Titus Andronicus show the day before. (They had sort of opened with Pulp's "Common People," by the way, which was very funny!) That kid was wearing a Boris shirt. He let me take a picture of him. Cute kid! So weird that I stood next to the same kid on different days! Boris was amazing, by the way. They fucking blew out half the electricity, they rocked so fucking hard! I also met Richard's wife and his beautiful baby. I swear, he has the cutest baby ever. I booped Max's nose and got to hold him for a picture. Super chill baby! I love him. Thanks, Richard! Before I met up with Richard, I saw most Les Savy Fav's set. Whatshisface went into the crowd a bunch of times. This one guy next to me motioned him to come over. Beardo locked eyes on him and nodded maniacally, jumped the barricade, and made out with him and a couple of other guys. Then he went way out into the crowd and came back aloft in a GARBAGE CAN. Pretty cool! Before LSF was Apples in Stereo. Rainbows shot out of my asshole.

I can't wait to share my photos with you.

I forgot to mention this! After the Cheap Time/Jay Reatard/King Khan show (actually, after the bar closed about 30 minutes later), Benno was kind enough to walk me over to Randolph St so I could catch a cab. Things were looking kind of scarce, but then this guy with a Pitchfork artist badge ran over and asked us if we were looking for a cab. We were both going downtown, so we decided to split the cab. Shortly thereafter, he spotted a cab and waved it down. We talked about how amazing King Khan and his band was, I mentioned my Jarvis anecdote, et cetera, et cetera. I ask him about his artist badge. He's not one of the performers. I turns out his name is Ryan. He's the founder of Pitchfork. WTF!! So weird.

Also, I saw a redheaded rock chick lady with an artist badge in my hotel elevator. She was with J. Mascis! I gushed about J's shredding and stuff, and she was very nice and gracious and cool! GOOD TIMES.

Does anyone know if there was any truth to the rumor that he was giving out $4 haircuts in the VIP area Sat.? Because I heard this from several people and it seems like something he would do.

Was the kid in the Boris shirt the same one that Tim put mud on? Because I saw him a bunch and it was awesome. It was really cool to see how many kids were there, especially since many of the ones I saw seemed to be really enjoying themselves.

It sounds way nicer than it is, but the perks are nice. Free beer, free sparks, free chipotle burritos and free fuze. Slightly nicer (i.e. less-frequented) porta-potties and some picnic tables, too.

99.99% of the people in the VIP section aren't rockstars or industry tycoons, but are media dorks who negotiated with the promoter - "We'll give you a free ad if you give us 10 free VIP passes!" It was funny standing in line for a burrito and hearing two bloggers interviewing each other.

Guess it was true. From the AV Club's wrapup:
Quote
5:33pm, David: Looks like Tim Harrington's mysterious bag was filled with haircut supplies: He's giving $2 haircuts to all takers. Already deeply into cutting a fan's hair, Harrington tells a story that goes nowhere about how he got home from work late last night and his wife wants him to clean out the gutters. "He better not touch my beard," one guy worriedly says aloud. Harrington's got hand sanitizer, electric-razor accessories, and a comb waiting on an upside-down UPS box at his makeshift station. "I'm gonna protect that part like it's an endangered species," Harrington tells a laughing client. He wraps up another haircut, saying, "It looks just like your old haircut, but this one's handsome." Also, for 50 cents, he offers to trim the guy's armpits and tweeze his stray nipple hairs. The customer happily complies. "This might be a crew cut tomorrow," Harrington tells a guy whose hair is being butchered. "Don't be scared," he says while shaving the back of his head with a crude stencil fashioned out of a cardboard beer case. None of these are things you want to hear or experience from a barber, but it's a pretty great spectator sport.

I can verify that this dude is a total liar. I saw a lot of steps*, a few fashion mullets, and white guy dreads (one of which was on a redhead, really unfortunate).

I'm a heatseeker. (Sorry, I didn't snap pictures and upload them to imeem or whatever that is. My memory card filled up pretty quickly. I had to delete cute pictures of my cats. If I snapped pictures every time I saw raybans, a dude wearing sunglasses on his face and regular glasses on his head, and skinny guys wearing short shorts, I would have to delete pictures of kids splashing in water and Richard's baby and shit, and I'm not doing that.)

*Is that what you call those things shaved into the side of dirty hipsters' heads?

Good point. A Tim Harrington-styled, $2 high-and-tight is a marked improvement over most of the haircuts in the joint.

Then I looked down and realized I was wearing my Scar-Face shirt and not my ironic outfit, making me blend in with the professional scalpers.  To make things worse, I was snickered at several times without a single person understanding it. Oh uber-indie kids  ::)

haha i usually just lurk here, but i had to sign up to say that i definitely saw you trying to sell the tix. i snickered at the shirt. but, like, in the intended way?

and also, laurie, jarvis came to a bar me and my friend went to after saturday night of the fest. how cool is that?

Jarvis and I shared a delicious chicken satay with cucumbers from the Star of Siam with a peach mango Fuze. And then cuddled under the bleachers for the entire Animal Collective set.
