Title: Favorite Tom vs. caller moments
Post by: Sploops on October 21, 2006, 07:26:03 PM
We all know that the conversations between Tom and various Newbridge residents are hilarious.  But what about Tom and the average joe sixpack q. public.

This clip http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=8430&starttime=1:02:03 (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=8430&starttime=1:02:03) never ceases to crack me up.  The first time I heard it I actually fell off my seat and my belly literally ached from laughing so hard.  Everytime I've relistened it still gets me.  I don't know why it amuses me so much, it may seem like just another random Best Show moment to you, but I love it.

Do you have any favorite Tom/caller interactions?

Tom and Pudge this past week trying to find out the name of the caller's radio show was an instant classic.  It was a slow burn - awesome!

I think if the writers of "According to Jim" listened to even five seconds of the Best Show they would hang themselves in shame.

One of my favorites has to be when some kid calls in with that lame "I saw your girlfriend at Home Depot" bit that he can't quite pull off. Tom reels this little bastard in with the Jimi Hendrix bait, and then just CRUSHES him.

I full-on belly laugh every time I hear that.

I'm thinking about bringing back the Kid Kansas schtick.

I really enjoyed the three-way rumble on the 6/20/06 show between Tom, Purpleshirt, and Greg from Raleigh after the Hurricanes' Stanley Cup win, particularly when something falls in the background and Greg asks if Purpleshirt's little pot of soup fell over.

I can't remember if that guy requesting Joan Jett was a bit or not. It was from when I first started listening, I think, and I was still figuring out what was real and what was a bit.

I still don't believe Captain Jack is real, just like I don't believe in fairies.

Whenever Tom hangs up on a caller within five seconds, it has me rolling, particularly when he gives some capricious "I don't like your voice" reason.

I'm not convinced that Captain Jack isn't a put-on. I do enjoy his shtick, in doses. Didn't he also torment Chris T on occasion?

When Tom wanted to have an audio cuddle party and that chick called up with that really, sex-kitten type of voice.  He said he had to hang up on her, didn't exactly give a reason but it was obvious.  That was funny.

Also, not a Tom vs. a caller moment but a John vs. a caller moment - Jimmy Crespo.  My god, when he called that kid a schmuck I lost it (so did Tom by the way), and he follows with, "How many pull ups can you do?"  Ridiculous.  Hilarious.

I also loved when Crespo asked the kid who Matthias Jabs* was.

Tom singing the whole Bridge over torubled water album to Sathington. I listen to that show several times a year, I nearly cry with mirth.

I love those Joan Jett calls!  I think there were like three of them or so.  Tom kept pretending to rederict him to the mailroom, security desk, accounting, etc. and he never caught on.  He had to be a confederate, nobody could be that stupid.  Or could they?

I always feel weird about those calls, because I realized awhile later that DC DJs Don and Mike did something similar years ago. It might've been buried in my subconscious, and if I think about it they were doing something kinda different, but The Kid takes pride in being fresh! I promise! The Best Show dont steal!*

Tom.

*Except Get Off My Phone, which is a radio tradition that I'm carrying forward and making my own, kinda like a blues song or something.

My goal is to turn Bad at Sports into a call in show solely so I can use "GOMP" and carry on the tradition.

Like Keith Olbermann with "Good night, and good luck"!

i 2nd kickthebobo's mention; i rediscovered that moment at the beginning of an old tape from when i had recorded some of the show, and it is 2-3 hillarious minutes.  Tom reels him in, starts asking him about his tastes in music, then GOMP, "thought i was your friend...i'm your foe."

could be wrong, but i always thought that might've been Mac (Yuu-wiggie-malmstein rock history kid), who i've speculated is the kid responsible for some recent heinous crimes against the Best Show that were related to Petey.

I can't think of any specific examples but I love whenever Tom catches a caller taking a passive-aggressive stab at someone and then cowardly trying to like 'backpedal" on it, like it never happened. And he calls them on it, making them stand up to it: "You took a shot at the guy...own it." And there's this great moment where they kind of recoil in shame. Sometimes he's just teasing, I know, but it's hilarious and refreshing to hear. There's this horrible kid I know that ALWAYS conceals and obscures these nasty little insults who i'd love to hear Tom expose as the coward he is.

And yes I agree with DanSF, anytime Wurster joins Tom versus a clueless caller, I am automatically hysterical....Jimmy Crespo and the CNN crawls bits had me convulsing. I'd love to hear more of those.
