why can't I find genuine article versions of these for less than $300 on the internet?
-
Yeah, 5th generation is the way to go. Those things are collectors items if they're new.
Jordan 4's aren't bad either especially if you plan to actually wear the suckers.
-
I wanted the 5's when I was in 4th grade and got the 6's (which are also nice, but a little more understated) for my birthday in the 5th grade.
I wouldn't mind getting the retro Nike versions that came out in 2006 (I think), but I think they're out of production now too, so they've gotten just as ridiculous.
If I can't find them for around $100 from a reputable place so that I know they're not knockoffs, I won't be pursuing them. (I have a feeling this is how it's going to end)

it makes me sad to think about the 4th graders in china who made those sneakers [/pc]
-
ok, I would settle for these Reebok Tennis Pumps, which I also wanted in the 5th grade. Super hot.

also, here's a shocker: I can't find these in size 14.
-
I still want these:

I do appreciate those Joy Div kicks, but I get sad that though Vegetarian Shoes makes these:

They don't make these:

I want the oxblood, damn it!!

I want the oxblood, damn it!!
Ha. My fiancee's been wearing the same pair of oxblood docs for the past 10 years or so. I don't know how that company stays in business. I've always been a Chucks man myself. They last about an afternoon.
Yeah, I think I should probably wear Chucks with my tux on our wedding. Cheesy? Yes, but worth it. I'll probably wear morning dress, actually. Tuxes are too informal. Or maybe some form of court regalia, or a nudie suit? Too many options.
ps: I'm glad that Converse got bought out by Reebok if that's the only way the shoes can continue being made (I stockpiled a bunch of pairs when the rumor was that they were going to go out of production), but GOD DAMN if there aren't too many varieties now. There are 600 or so different kinds listed on Zappos right now.

They were actually bought by Nike, which helps explain the glut of Converse styles. They also moved production of Chucks overseas. And since it's Nike, they're now most likely made by children.
There are plenty of imitation Chucks made ethically, though. No Sweat (http://nosweatapparel.com/) makes a good pair.

Oh, jeepers. I just bought a pair - I didn't think too hard about it. I woulda got something else if I'd known they were made by Nike overseas now.
Damn liberal guilt...

I saw 'This Is England' last week, it was unsettling and good in a strange, weird way. Felt more like a documentary then a movie, I guess that was the idea

Can we go on this tangent? Briefly?
I loved it until the very end, when I got really pissed about how they tied everything up all nice and neat. No one else I talked to about it felt this way though! Am I crazy?

yesno, we were going to do our wedding all in chucks. NOT cheesy. its comfortable, man. no one sees the brides shoes and as long as the grooms chucks are brand new, first worn down the aisle, youre good. and matching helps.
i got your back, fool.

wha-...oh, come on!
ok, admittedly, we didnt PLAN it. it was more like, "i dont like any of these traditional 'dress' shoes...let's wear whatever we want. no one will care." and its cheaper.
sigh.

Some elements of the ending were important but I agree, I was a little frustrated with the ending. I wouldn't have minded if it would have been 20-30 minutes longer to give it a better finish. It just seems that so much is happening within 5 minutes.

My shoes were one of the small handful of issues to cause dumb arguments before my wedding. I wanted to wear my Blundstones - polished up, I figured they'd look more or less the same as dress shoes anyway. And I didn't want to buy a pair of shoes for this one occasion.
I won that argument, eventually, and six years later (our anniversary's in 2 days) we're still happily married. I've replaced the Blundstones, though.

I just bought chucky style vans for me and all the groomsmen, so anyone who says otherwise can cram it. It's my damned wedding.
On the No Sweat side, they drive me BONKERS with the no having other types of shoes, colors and whatnot. But they are very nice in explaining why not.

I felt slightly cheated at the end for the reasons mentioned, could have been handled better?! It didn't ruin it for me. I was amazed at how close that kid gets to screwing his life up forever just by hanging around the wrong person, the whole idea of not having enough experience to know the difference...wanting to be accepted.

I appreciate the pro-sneakers at the wedding sentiment. I have to wear dress shoes for work. For my wedding I figure I had better get REALLY nice shoes that are better than the Shoe Carnival dockers I usually wear, or just give up and get all black chucks.
I am jealous of how well the men dress in Mad Men and Jeeves & Wooster. I am also a fan of Lord Whimsy.* But good men's shoes are crazy expensive.
*(I highly recommend his book, The Affected Provincial's Companion. He's an artist and naturalist who lives in the Pine Barrens and spends all his money on tailored suits. He's been on Irwin's show, too.)

My cousin had an all-Chuck-Taylors wedding back in the late '80's. This was kinda like the crowd in the wedding in About Schmidt. I was an awkward kid in early pubescence or pre-pubescence at the time. I was the ring bearer. I don't remember much except a bunch of drunk metal-head friends of my cousin and her new husband and there was a lake and "Reelin' In The Years" was played at some point. I do remember some dude making fun of my pink tie (Miami Vice era) but I was like 11 years old and this guy had to be 24 or something. He had a mustache. I remember thinking "Wow, I'm only 11, you prick". Anyway, everyone was wearing Chuck Taylors. My cousin basically abandoned her husband and their dogs after a year of marriage, went completely AWOL for a year and then turned up in New Mexico. So i guess I have negative associations. Far be it from me to stop two crazy kids in love from doing what they want in life! None of you guys seem like an alcoholic moron with delusions of psychic abilities like my cousin is, so, as Jimmy Parton would say, I wish you a lot of luck!
-
I've been wearing Chucks since I was 12, and I'm almost 30. So I have an unhealthy attachment to the brand. I even used to run in them, like Rocky. They haven't been as popular as they are today since the pop-punk boom of the late 90s. Fads come and go. Metalheads, emo teens, crazy alcoholic families adopt them. This too shall pass. My preferred brand of apparently sweatshop-made sneakers remains.

That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me today!

I wanted Jordan 5's in 6th grade and I got these:
your parents did the right thing.
i'm constantly thankful mine never gave in and bought me all that crap growing up that i didn't need and was better off without (z. cavarricci's, dumb sneakers, etc.)
and emily's right about the folks who make them - definitely a sobering thought when you're lacing up your shoes each morn.
