Hello!
If you are an enterprising sort and you would like to hear specific GOMPs played during the start of the show, please post them here as mp3s so I can play them.
Thank you so much.
Tom.

Here is the payola GOMP I love so much. Is there a min/max length you'd like these to be? This one is only like
10 23 seconds.

Wait, can we post mp3 files here? If so, can someone let me know how to do that please? I poked around but can't find a way to do it.

One can use Wiretap Pro to record an mp3 off of the archive.

Who is that creep on those calls? I've never heard him before.

Thanks for the tip, Dorvid. I will definitely be using that in the future. But what I meant was actually posting mp3 files on the boards rather than links to them. Maybe I just misread what Tom wrote.

here are a few:
Purple Shirt's Kid:

Does anybody have a suggestion for non-Mac users?

Zeph GOMP

This Zeph GOMP is awesome because both Tom and JW lose it at the same time.
-
I've got no concept of how to make an MP3 of this, but it's not for lack of trying. Given that, perhaps I should keep it to myself, but here is the call:
August 17, 2004 - 1:11:27 (http://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=12241&archive=15045&starttime=1:11:27)
The ol' bait and switch GOMP at it's best! You know it's coming from the moment the caller says 'now look here boy'. The call is pretty long so I don't know if the whole thing would work, but it could definitely afford to be edited down. Hope this helps!

Amazing. I'd forgotten about this one.
I'll try to gather some GOMPs and post them here later in the week. Do you just want older GOMPs, or do you want ones from the current year as well? I wasn't sure since calls from this year could be potential award nominees for next year (assuming there's another awards show).

I think that was during one of Petey's birthday bashes and he wasn't gomped he was shocked by Doc Shock and Doc Shock Jr.

All time classic was Tom gomping Baby Ed. 04 or 05.
-
I was looking for the Baby Ed GOMP but I can't remember which show. Here are a couple I found, all from the same show:
Tom GOMPs Hova while trying to negotiate the purchase of some shelves: http://www.sendspace.com/file/xghs2m
Tom GOMPs a guy from Arkansas: http://www.sendspace.com/file/v76kpc
Tom GOMPs a Living Colour fan: http://www.sendspace.com/file/sptfxl
-
The baby Ed show is 5-10-2005 according to the archives. I don't have my mp3 editing gear or I'd get cracking.

Listening to the show from the beginning again, I came across one that has cracked me up to no end and might be one of my favorite moments now. A very young caller (I think it might even be Petey??) calls up asking why Tom won't play Led Zeppelin. He says he is from New York City (on 6th Avenue) but decides to use the voice of a grizzled prospector. Tom nearly loses it on a couple of occasions, but pulls off a MASTERFUL gomp at the end.
http://dc17.4shared.com/download/49507187/da4d15ca/Tom_Gomps_A_Very_Bad_Fake_Voice__Peteys_First_Call_maybe_.mp3
EDIT: I forgot that I left on a short bit at the beginning and end. Here's one that is actually trimmed:

It was from the November 6, 2001 episode, just after the record fair. Around the 1:53 mark.

Here's a good one from February 18, 2003. Tom gets called by a woman who says she's on a road trip with her dog and her girlfriends. She says he should play some music, Tom says he hopes the dog mauls all of them. I clipped a bit of it, tried to make it end with a bang so it would sound better at the top of the show.

there has not been one GOMP in this entire thread that i haven't liked
-
Here is another one from the show I posted about earlier. It could be the first show where "how dare you" is prominently used. Its from the Frank Zappa show in 2001

I've been listening to a lot of older episodes recently and keep hearing GOMPs I have to record. This one is from Tom's reenactment of Road House in 2004. He GOMPs Dalton aka Patrick Swayze in character as Brad Wesley (the bad guy in road house). Spectacular

Good one. The next call provides some hot Tom Laffs action as well.
-
I forgot about Sonny!
That guy was one of the best callers I've ever heard. I still remember how hot he was running... he was like a alley cat that was dropped from a great height... but landed on his feet, hissing and bristling.
-
Two words: Bilingual Gomp!
This is from 2003 when Petey tried to show off some Spanish on the air, leading Tom to hold Petey on the line as long as possible until he could find out how to say "get off my phone" in Spanish. Available in both the full version (http://dc14.4shared.com/download/52006723/59ee759/Tom_Gomps_Petey_In_Another_Language.mp3) and the condensed version (http://dc14.4shared.com/download/52006707/30c541c2/Tom_Gomps_Petey_In_Another_Language__condensed_.mp3) that won't be too long to slow down the pace.

Nice!
-
Want some dirty trivia...?
The first call of 2008 was the guy who got me into The Best Show. I heard that voice and I thought "that goon sounds familiar..."
-
I think Sonny might be Omar's first serious competition for ROY 2008.
-
I think Sonny might be Omar's first serious competition for ROY 2008.
I'm pulling for the lunatic that called 2-3 weeks ago that didn't know where Palisades was or that there were IMAX theaters.
-
That guy was great. He had the demeanor of a crazy old man who no one pays attention to. He's probably trying to use an old filthy passenger pigeon to post to this board.
"You know, like how the kids do it!" Then tosses it out the window with a cracker and a note tied to it's leg.
-
i'll jump on this train being conducted by "the lunatic". especially when Rupert Murdock turns into "Uncle Rupert", and you can hear Tom say, "this is fantastic..."
-
A short one:

Starts Nice, Gets Nicer, then comes the GOMP.

That is fantastic. Lots of callers (angry) like the Goshen jerk last night. Ew boy.
-
Here's a good one from the 8/12/03 show. A little background since the entire call was too long to use: A very boring young man calls from a Home Depot and talks aimlessly about politics for awhile, prompting Tom to call him Dave Emory Jr. Tom asks him to put a Home Depot employee on the line, but Tom soon realizes something's not quite right with the heavily-accented man who comes on the line and a GOMP ensues.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/5ahyg5
-
I always thought a GOMPusa.com would be a good website to compile the whole show's worth of GOMP's, but that website is taken by something...else.
-
http://drop.io/trickytrickster
from 6-27-2006.
The kind of call where someone thinks he's not on the air, and Tom pretends to be various call screeners.
The full version is funny, but it mentions the M word.
The short version I like better, because out of context the way Tom talks to the caller is pretty great.
-
I'm trying to remember to isolate good GOMPs as I come across them. Good, solid bread and butter GOMPs, not necessarily the super extreme ones.
Here are two more, from 9/19/2006:
http://drop.io/starksandsuperhero
Superhero costume GOMP, and John Starks GOMP.
-
This one's from the 3/25/08 show, where Steve from North Hollywood, after being GOMP'd earlier in the show, exhibits tremendous courage by calling back to participate in the "I love you, but..." topic. Things do not go well.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/80xr3n
BTW, I'm not posting this to embarrass Steve or make him feel bad - I'm a fan of his calls and I was very glad to hear him call again last week. I just think it's a good GOMP.
-
Sorry to hog this thread, but I'm trying to post these as I run across them. This is an epic Captain Jack GOMP that comes at the end of the bonanza of bad callers that is the 6/3/03 show. Captain Jack tries to come on friendly, but Tom's not having it and the Captain Jack facade peels away, revealing the ugly horror beneath. The call ends with Tom GOMPing him at the top of his lungs before dissolving into a blubbering heap.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/8iwv6c
-
A few good ones. This one was from this real creep calling after the Iraq war was starting to unravel talking about how "you gotta" stand behind the war now that it has begun. Tom tries to talk with the guy for awhile, but eventually can't take it anymore and GOMPs him, so frustrated he's screaming (boy, can I relate to that). But the fun part comes after, when Tom puts the next call on the air without a word, leaving the guy frustrated in perhaps one of the most pathetic GOMPs ever:
http://dc14.4shared.com/download/52006729/e54b0e47/Double_Gomp_of_Ya_Gotta.mp3
And what Tom called "the most unfair GOMP ever" (in 2003), where he gomps someone for saying he'd like to see someone stab Ashton Kutcher after asking how funny it would be if Ashton Kutcher got stabbed.
http://dc14.4shared.com/download/58820271/87a46144/Tom_Gomps_By_Entrapment.mp3
-
I've been in a non-traditional GOMP mood lately such as the amazing H-Man GOMPs from last Tuesday. Here is another non-traditional GOMP in which Tom GOMPs Michael Savage even though he isn't actually on his phone. http://www.sendspace.com/file/95t3ho (http://www.sendspace.com/file/95t3ho)
-
Tom GOMPs a guy sports talk style. Eighties guitar included!
GET BENT!
http://www.sendspace.com/file/se6rwz (http://www.sendspace.com/file/se6rwz)
-
Two awesome ones.
First one of this freak who calls because he is impersonating "Tom from 91.1" to get notches in the chart over his bed. (http://dc14.4shared.com/download/59846730/9e58f7f5/Tom_Gomps_A_Deceitful_Pervert__short_.mp3)
Second one (a personal favorite) where Tom GOMPs this guy trying to do a lame bit about Swiss cheese and ends by doing a brief Jerry Seinfeld impression. (http://dc14.4shared.com/download/59846729/fe9f7e10/Tom_Gomps_Jerry_Seinfeld_Wannabe.mp3)
-
I included the whole call (about two minutes) to preserve the catharsis at the end. My God, did this guy deserve it.
From the show where Tom played Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/b74v4u
-
This is from September of last year, a special birthday GOMP for Colin and Fran.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ikgv5d
And here is another GOMP from the same show. Well-deserved (as they all are) for besmirching the Abba box.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/pr8xu7
-
This might be more suitable for airplay on or near Election Night, since this is from Election Night 2004. This is when Tom, dejected by his country, just randomly makes the claim that The Flintstones came before The Honeymooners to create needless chaos. One of the show's perfect little moments, because it somehow encapsulates all the frustration and futility so many of us felt. This was the first caller to take Tom's bait, and he was absolutely perfect. Tom banishes him to South Dakota.
http://dc14.4shared.com/download/61705932/d1cb49ac/Tom_Gomps_A_FactChecker.mp3
Right after Tom banned Tommert, he called back in with a stupid song asking for forgiveness. This is about 10 seconds long and isn't a GOMP, but it's still funny.

Sorry, I'm a newbie, but what is a GOMP? Motion to post glossary page? Love the show. Bye!

when tom hangs up on someone and says "get off my phone!"
if you still have any questions, i suggest listening to every single one of these that have been posted.

First Tom and Paul hang up on a gentleman who threatens physical violence upon his girlfriend:

julie, youve come a long way...?

This is kind of an unusual one - Petey GOMPs a caller (with encouragement from Tom) during his interview of Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro on the 6/18/02 show. The caller's reaction definitely answers the question "Can you hear it when you're GOMPed?"

Tom (with Evan in the studio for a marathon) offers Spike the keys to the kingdom and Spike won't give Tom a definite answer. What a creep! GOMP!

http://www.sendspace.com/file/0dnfhi
I remember actually getting mad at Spike for that.
-
It just shows you what a mutant he truly is. This is during a marathon for a show/station he clearly enjoys and he can't force himself to commit to help Tom. I'm not sure what scares Spike more in this clip, being judged by the other listeners or admitting that he cares enough about anything to go to Jersey for. "I don't do New Jersey."
-
I'm not very techsavy and am pretty sure I don't have any audio editing software, but here's a great one:
9/19/06, the call begins at 2:16:37
The conversation is regarding superheros playing sports and what Tom would do if he had superpowers. The call is a little long, but could be cut into context.
-
Also about twenty minutes later Tom Gomps someone for insulting John Starks.
-
Your wish... blah blah blah
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ce8qrk
Tom GOMPs a guy talking about superheros in sports for implying that Tom's personal clothes are not cool enough for a superhero.

-
Ah, very nice. Thanks Pope.

When i get home from work im trying my hand at this... I feel like there are WAY better ones i remember that arent getting highlighted...
like any Boom your a ghost for starters....

These are from the April 15, 2008 show (also features Emma's first call):
1. Leon, who "confesses to stealing $20 when he covered for Matthew C.'s paper route while he was in the hospital for an appendix operation." (http://www.mediafire.com/?zya2jindmmw)
2. Tom delivers a "Nevermind! You're making me sick to my stomach!" to Mike, who defended the Final Boss gaming team, and then "compares Arenas to a gunner like 'Pistol' Pete Maravich, racking up big offensive stats but never winning anything." (http://www.mediafire.com/?migum2tniln)
3. Tom sends Connor from D.C. to rock school for not knowing what the Dischord House is. (http://www.mediafire.com/?yyydn1lm1jj)

One can use Wiretap Pro to record an mp3 off of the archive.
Does anybody have a suggestion for non-Mac users?
Sorry if this has been covered already but the search function seems to be broken.
Audacity is your one stop shop for clipping and recording live streams or MP3s. Its an open GL project (ie free) and is on EVERY operating system out there. OK maybe not Sun but who cares. Find the program, here (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).

Find the program, here.

You gotta! You gotta!
This one is long and could probably be two separate files. But it flows so well.

This is one of my favorites, especially when Tom starts impersonating him at the end.

Not quite a GOMP, but its one of my favorite Julie calls.

That was beautiful. Thank you.
How can I catch quotes in the cool boxes like you veteran FOTS. Don't tell me if it's a club secret>

Look up, and to the right. Up. And to the right.

Yup, Dave's got it. You can just press the "Quote" button that all the posts have. That'll automatically start a new post for you with the correct tags. You can edit out extraneous stuff from the post you're quoting, as long as you leave the tags at the beginning and end intact. Try it!

I think this may be the first GOMP ever. I'm working through the archives backwards so I don't know what's ahead of me, but what Tom says afterwards makes me think this is the first. It's from the 8/21/01 show.

I am working from the first show archived to now and from what I can tell the first GOMP is the April 17th, 2001 show. If I remember correctly it was to Tor but I could be wrong.
And speaking of good GOMPs for the beginning of the show, I REALLY wish Tom had said "Get Off My Phone" when Petey called on 8/7/01. It's great.
Tom: FMU, you're on the air!
Petey: Does the phone work?!
Tom: Hey is this Petey?!
Petey: YE-
Tom: (hangs up) BAAHAHAHAHAH. You little...MWAHAHAHAHAHohohoahahahaaa. Oh, You're so stupid, son! You gotta move faster than that!
Priceless.

Just got to the 4/17/01 show. You're correct on the date but the guy he GOMPs is a guy who calls during the NRBQ decimation to defend their ability to play more than three chords and in different time signatures. I'm not sure if defending NRBQ makes you better or worse than Tor, but it's pretty close.

I think this might be the first appearance of Spike. Its also a good Gomp.

Excellent choice. Do you know the date of this call?
-
03/02/04 , Spike keeps calling back too. The episode is hilarious. Other Bonuses: Talking Toblerone, Captain Jack going crazy, and plenty of Alfonso Blackwell.
-
Tom GOMPs a 6-year-old from 6/20/06. Tom and kids is always so great.

I've been going back and listening to the archives in order. That is the first GOMP. The call starts around 1:33:00. The GOMP is around 1:34:50
