Our 1990 Toyota Camry Station Wagon required just over $40 to fill up this week. What the fuck, people?

Actually, we splurged TODAY and bought this car:  http://automobiles.honda.com/fit/exterior-photos.aspx

Gets better mileage than many hybrids.

I don't know yet. I have a Hybrid. A full tank lasts a month.

I've been riding my bike. I bought my dad's 1993 Buick last summer, $70CAD for a full tank. I travel for work often, so the car stays parked most of the time. I haven't filled up the tank in over a month.

I think we're at like $4.17 in my neighborhood.  Last time it was like $53 to fill up my tank.

I just had the privilege of paying $4.19 a gallon to fill up the entire 15 gallon tank of my old Chrysler sedan last week, which ended up being north of $60. There was another gas station across the street that was selling for $4.07, but the cars were lined up 5-deep for every pump, I was on my way to work, and the $4.19 place was completely empty. It was actually kind of funny.

I don't remember how much a whole tank costs but I get 34+ miles per gallon so I'm not too unhappy!

that's good.  i get approx 34mpg myself...but go through gas like crazy.  its annoying.  im constantly having to run errands, etc. and phoenix has no interest in building their city up rather than out

it makes for a bad situation, like now.

More importantly, what are you paying for sandwiches?

Today I blew $8 on a sandwich that had (1) some not so great moozadel (2) some basil (3) some unfresh tomato (4) some oil.  I'm still annoyed.

I hate how the pronunciation of mozzarella has gotten completely out of control by people who want to prove what a foodie they are.  when did it turn into mootsallel?

I like lifting pronunciations from the Sopranos.  Even though I'm from Jersey I never heard "moozadel" or "gabagoo" or most of the others  growing up.  In real life it was "mootzarella."  But then, I'm not Italian.

I did grow up pronouncing pasta fagioli as "pasta fajool," though.

A friend of mine (who can speak standard Italian fluently) made up a list of fake Italian Jersey dialect a while ago that I ought to type in one of these days.  I still remember "gabone," for toilet.

I used to have a co-worker that would pronounce mozzarella that way, complete with a sudden Italian accent on the word too. It really annoyed me because the only time would talk about mozzarella would be when was describing his mozzarella sticks.

I hate giada delorenta based solely on the fact that she TRYS to speak with an italian accent.  she even pronounces words differently in the same show.

that, and the fact that she's fat.

I hate when people try to pronounce any word or place name "authentically" when there's an established English pronunciation.

For some reason it's most common with Italian and Spanish.

Also, the Turin Olympics drove me crazy with this made-up nonsense word "Torino."  It's been called Turin in English since forever.  And it's so inconsistent-- why not Venezia?  Fiorenza?

There's a place in South Jersey where my in-laws live that always undercuts the station across the street by a penny or two and has long lines.  I used to go there until I did the math one day and realized that I'd only be saving twelve cents if I filled my tank.  Thankfully, I can live without a car these days and probably spend about $100 a month to get where I need to go.

Yeah, I figured the money I'd save on gas would be outweighed by the money I'd lose by being 90 minutes late to work.

Man, I remember when I didn't need a car. Heady days, indeed...

What's worse/more offensive:

Mooslems, Moslems, Mohommedans?

Do American Muslims have a preference? I always assumed that the recent comeback of these archaic pronunciations was a revival of racist Western imperialistic language.  Not because they are logically offensive but just because racists love being "not PC."

"Moslem" is offensive for linguistic reasons-- it sounds like a derogatory word in Arabic, iirc.

That's a different issue than people showing off with their "authentic" pronunciations.

I've been trying to get "Moors" to come back for forever now. Still no takers.

I think that pronunciation of mozzarella is a North Jersey thing.  I never heard it from Italian-Americans in South Jersey or Philly growing up (nor in Italy, come to think of it), but even non-Italians in certain parts of North Jersey said it like that.

I paid $25 for my Metrocard this week.  But I also successfully passed my driving test!!!  I'm a licensed driver and yes, I'm bragging about it.

Are your parents going to let you drive their car to high school?  Did they take you out for pizza to celebrate?
