Title: Tom vs. Van Halen
Post by: Patrick on June 03, 2008, 01:36:04 PM

unless i am remembering incorrectly i believe that a few weeks ago Tom tore apart Van Halen.  calling them the dumbest band of all time?  well anyway i wanted to re-live those moments, but i cannot find the show it was in.  i believe it was towards the end of a show because i remember Small Change cracking up in the background.  any help?

thanks

Thankfully, Tom has ripped Van Halen on several occasions.  This isn't the one you requested, but it's totally dubular.

7/24/07:  tomevh.mp3 - 0.80MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/13060208e8dec0cd/)

it's gotta be either may 13 or may 20.  i didn't double check, but i'm pretty sure.

I remember one occasion where Tom was ripping on VH during a conversation with Henry Owings, who was defending them.

Tom supported Michael Anthony though, and described his bass playing as "like an atomic clock!" which I agree with completely.

"bomp bomp  bomp bomp bomp bomp bomp bomp "

VAN HALEN RULES!

This is going to have to be another one of those agree-to-disagree situations where Tom hates something I like. The problem with Tom is that he doesn't really have the tendency to like anything I can point and laugh at for being crapola in response to these kinds of slights. It's a bit awkward.

I've been digging through the archives and I just listened to one from '06 where he puts down Petey for going to see Ween.  The Van Halen dissing I can sort of stomach, but the Ween insult hit a little too close to home for me.  It's weird when Tom hates on cult icons rather than more obviously evil/unavoidable targets.

Well, Van Halen aren't metal, so I'm not sure why you're mentioning them side-by-side.

In any case, I like Van Halen a whole bunch, but I guess I can see why some folks wouldn't.

Tom does it all the time.

Tom's played his share of Belle & Sebastian, who've simultaneously made some great songs while being very very very point-and-laughable.

I can honestly say that to this day I still unironically like Van Halen (including some Van Hagar era VH). EVH is the reason why I ever picked up the guitar in the first place. Not that I'm proud of that or anything.

i prefer Tom hitting the "cult icons" because the obviously evil/unavoidable targets are just that...obvious and unavoidable.

I'm a big Ween fan, but like a lot of cult bands or cult anything they're wildly inconsistent.

I had a friend who was a Ween hater until he saw a free show at Rutgers and was blown away by their virtuosity.  I just have a soft spot for people who do pastiche, but surpass the originals.

I was a big Ween fan until I saw them live. Their smug delivery and rabid fans turned me off FOREVER!

this happens ALL the time for me.  but i actually like it, because it wouldn't be as much fun if you agreed with him about everything.  like those whole episodes dedicated to hating on zappa and the band?  i mean, that's some funny stuff.

The first concert I went to was Van Halen. That was the last time I willfully listened to Van Halen.
