Title: The World is in the Turlet
Post by: Dorvid Barnas on June 04, 2008, 02:56:33 AM
Big Steve is on the drum set
Counting it four by four
Little Jimmy jamming the six-string
Giving the people more

Count Violence bringing the low-end
Cuz that's all that he knows what to do
And my name's Ted
That's what I said

And the western world will perish in fifteen years

And then in the year sixteen when the world is clean
Clean of this hipster scene
Well all their ghosts will scream for what their souls have seen
And the tapas they could have been eating

But
The world is in the turlet
The world is in the turlet
The world is in the turlet
And we're all gonna die.

Aw
The world is in the turlet
The world is in the turlet
The world is in the turlet
So don't ask why

Come on!

Nothing to drink I've got nothing to eat
I'm barely alive I'm dead on my feet
The East River boiled and belched up a cadaver
The corpse walked to Enid's for a drink and some palaver

And
The world is in the turlet
The world is in the turlet
The world is in the turlet
And we're all gonna die

Yeah
The world is in the turlet
The world is in the turlet
The world is in the turlet
So don't ask why

[guitar]

Cuz
The proof is in the pudding
The proof is in the pudding
The proof is in the pudding
And you don't ask why

I said
The proof is in the pudding
The proof is in the pudding
The proof is in the pudding
So give it a try

It
Was
Supposed
To Be
My
Moment
of
Triumph

It's about time "the proof is in the pudding" found its way into a rock song. It's not just for grandmothers anymore!

Cuz that's all that he knows what to do

I liked this too; intentional grammatical fuckery appeals to me for some reason.

I said it already, but it bears repeating: this song fucking ROCKED. To TL/Rx and the contributing lyricists - you guys knocked it out of the park.

I filled out the right paperwork to be able to post this here.*

*I know a couple of people recorded this from the stream, and I don't mean to step on their toes, but this version is taken from the posted high-quality archive and edited using Rogue Amoeba's awesome software, Fission, which allows you to losslessly edit MP3s and other compressed formats.  If you ever want to create clips from the show and are a Mac user you should check it out.

Since this is for posterity, I'm going to allow myself a correction here:  "palaver," please.

Boy, that song is good.  And with just the kind of message that tickles my fancy.

Can I just say how happy listening to this made me? And is making me again as I sit here in the school library grinning like a crazy person?

Today I have three papers due, two presentations and one "in-class exam" and last night I was stressed almost to the point of tears, but hearing this song actually completely turned my evening around. The Best Show did it again!

I wasn't on the verge of tears or anything, but I will say how absolutely floored I was to listen to this whole thing come so beautifully together, in such a short time! Amazing work by all those involved, from the rockstars and powercallers on down. By all rights this could have gone very wrong. The fact that it turned out so damn well is a testament to the power of The Best Show!

At the very least, this song alone should buy three straight weeks of preassigned W's.

This song effing rocks!  I am amazed at how quickly Ted put that together.  This IS your moment of triumph, Teddy Rockstar.

I love that intro segueing into the apocalypse noise, then the tattered-hopes-and-dreams section that erika wrote.

Makes me smile just thinking about it!

Much as I enjoyed the way The Christmas Donkey made my skin crawl, I'd have to vote for Rock 'n' Roll Dreams.  That was dazzling.

Or how about a compilation of all the songs TL has performed on the show?  That would be awesome, as the kids used to say.

This is what I use to edit the podcast every week. I used to convert the HQ archive to WAV and edit in SoundForge, but Fission saves me a shitload of time by losslessly editing the native mp3. Edits aren't as accurate (and sometimes glitchy), but I no longer have time for that annoying WAV conversion malarkey.

Fission = "Smash"

Wow, this song is dominating the internet today!  It's Q rating is off the charts.

TL should sell it to Taco Bell.

Edit:  Oh wait, I wasn't thinking about the tapas line.  Tapas being Spanish, that might come of a little weird/racist.

Edit-Edit:  Swap out "tapas" for "chalupas."  Problem solved.

I will one-up you on this: I have bought 7" records of songs I already own on compilation CDs because I prefer to sort them as singles in my iTunes (instead of as a song from such-and-such's Greatest Hits or whatever comp it came from). And what do I do after I buy these records? I scan the labels. And then I use these scans as the iTunes art. Really.

I have questions for those involved in the recording.

Where was it recorded?

Were you all sitting at your instruments listening to the show while the lyrics were being tossed around?

Were some of the musicians picking at their instruments while listening to the show?  Almost every guitar player I know can't stop absentmindedly picking away once a guitar is in hand.

Any more details for the FOT?

I think you could just rename them in iTunes though. In other words just type over the name of the album to "single" instead of "greatest hits." Maybe I'm just being thick as usual. Do you want to have a copy in both the original comp and as a single? I think I'm missing the point entirely. Sorry.

Am I the only one who will replace the iTunes album cover with my own cover or random image if I don't like the cover?

Hey, Pitchfork finally got around to mentioning the song:

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/forkcast/51262-ted-leo-and-the-pharmacists-the-world-is-in-the-terlet-mp3

"Punk rock is supposed to be simple, but even then, it's striking how easily Ted Leo and the Pharmacists seem to have wired up this doomsaying, high-voltage anthem. According to Fluxblog, "The World Is in the Terlet" was written and recorded earlier this month on "The Best Show on WFMU", with a few suggestions from listeners. If we're lucky, that type of situation usually leads to songs like Stephin Merritt's NPR-faciliated "Man of a Million Faces", but Ted Leo & co. have churned out something unusually arresting even if the underlying parts are familiar: shouted, handclapping choruses, some calmer verses, a scratchy guitar solo, and a drum intro that keeps reminding me of a faster version of the Wrens' "Everyone Chooses Sides". After some silly lyrics about the band, Leo screams, into a hail of banging percussion, that "the Western world will perish in 15 years". So, uh, sorry everybody.

In this post-apocalyptic environment, the ghosts of hipsters will cry out for "the tapas they could've been eating." That's a much better line than the ones that rhyme "cadaver" and "palaver" (as if any other word actually rhymes with cadaver... prove me wrong, Colin Meloy!), but hey, time constraints. "The proof," as Leo notes, "is in the pudding," and this pudding sure beats the vanila swill they used to serve in college dining halls. Leo's Grand Moff Tarkin-like last gasp completes the pessimistic victory: "It! Was! Supposed! To be! My! Moment! Of triiiiiiiiiuuuuumph!" I think you over-estimate their chances, Ted. (via Fluxblog)"

Sounds like Pitchfork is trying to start a beef with John Junk.

It's always been a dream of mine to be smugly dismissed by shovel.com, but I never thought it would involve a reference to one of my least favorite bands of all time.

Shovel really is on top of things. Only ten days to pick up on the story of the year? Good one.

Hey, I tried.

Also, I think John Junk >>>>> Decemberists. So there's that.

I've been listening to this somewhat excessively in the past week.

A brief attempt was made on one site to convince people that this was an actual serious Ted Leo song from his new album, but that's didn't last long.

(First post! Hello, FOT!)

Is Shovel really worse than other music reviewing sites?  I at least try to check out stuff they give high reviews to, though I never actually read the reviews.  Who has the time anymore? (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,3144.msg55441.html#msg55441) But  I've done my fair share of Shovel bashing all the while checking out the site.

About 50% of what makes their "Best New Music" is worth checking out.  If you're in that business, and you give something a good review, you're succumbing to or causing hype.  If you give something a bad review, you're assholes. If you like a new kind of sound, hype.  Don't like it, clueless, out of touch, cranky.

Also-- WANT WANT WANT

tom said he thought he should've spoken "best show exclusive" over the song or something, but he didn't, so the local music show at WRSU has now put this song into rotation. hope nobody minds  ;D

Now I'm imagining Tom saying that in the same voice Missy Elliott used over every song on Under Construction.

I don't care what kind of criticality pickle they're in.  As far as I'm concerned, Shovel.com drew first blood!

(I think this has not been mentioned yet)

Nate discussed his contribution on his blog:

http://natepatrin.wordpress.com/2008/06/09/i-also-review-stuff/

the relevant bit:

FINALLY: I kind of, sort of, accidentally pseudo-wrote the hook to the hott new Best Show on WFMU-constructed Ted Leo & the Pharmacists superjam, “The World Is in the Turlet”. Long story short, this was a listener-aided effort to collectively write a song for TLRX, and not realizing the gravity of the situation I phoned in with some sub-Meltzer doggerel that Rob Zombie might have possibly fished out of his trashbasket in a desperate attempt to finish the title song to the soundtrack for his upcoming film Satan Bastard Murder Jerks. A bit later I called in to apologize, offered a more generic lyrical contribution that went unused, and noted the fact that the song seemed to be building around the idea of how “the world’s going down the toilet”. Tom picked up that ball and ran with it, so now I kind of feel like that Daily Mail reporter who wrote the news story about the pothole problem in Blackburn. Except that this song doesn’t end one of the most overrated albums ever.

Listening to this song for the first time was amazing. Probably the best Best Show moment ever. I knew TLRx would come through but I didn't know they'd come THAT through.

I had a PFT moment yesterday when in the book I was reading the following passage came up (forgive me for that sentence, grammarians, I'm sleepy):

"But you must never forget the final theory, the theory of all theories," Ben warned near the end of my morning tutorial. "We call it TPITP: The Proof Is in the Pudding."

I would love to see TL & the Rx do this live! Smash!

The best thing about that song is that even peep who don't listen to the show will probably go apeshit for it. It's that good.

Palaver alert! I didn't think I'd ever see that word in print, but here it is, by one of the world's most annoying columnists:
