EDIT: This old topic got BUMPED on Nov 17, 2011 because of the DVD release of this movie -- see this post (http://friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,3121.msg185884.html#msg185884) for more details.

So after months of back-and-forths and various (at times seemingly endless) negotiations between backers and production companies, the documentary I'm working on, The Film I'm No Longer Talking About (orig. Filmen jag inte längre pratar om), has finally gotten proper funding from among others the Swedish Film Institute (SFI) and Swedish Public Television (SVT). It will be shown under SVT's prestigous "K Special" banner, which broadcasts hour-long documentaries about arts and culture, sometime in the first quarter of 2009. We've known for some time that SVT wanted to show it, but without funds from the SFI we would have to finish it without hiring a professional editor, we would possibly have to cut filming short, etc. This really gives us room to breathe. The news of the funding actually made some headlines - my partner-in-crime Jesper's latest feature film was quite a phenomenon here in Sweden, and people are excited to hear about his next project.
We're far from done, though - we have a couple more days of shooting this summer before devoting most of the fall to editing and promoting it (I will do much of the latter). Hope to get everything sorted by October-November.
Short synopsis: The film starts at the end of the dot com frenzy in 2001. A young man called Patrick finds himself a millionaire simply by being at the right place at the right time, and after working on the Lord of the Rings movies in New Zealand he decides that producing movies is what he should do. He starts up a (by Swedish standards) massive feature film project basically from scratch, summoning talented friends, not-so-talented friends, hangarounds and the odd professional to join the fun. He gets money from his dot com buddies. He starts to build a sound stage and a production company, purposefully way out of the way of the regular movie industry. And it all goes to hell. Friendships crash, people go bankrupt, the company goes belly-up. The movie is no more. Patrick hits rock bottom, he can't look people in the eye, everybody around him is in debt - his parents, his friends. He messed up.
Fast forward to 2007. We catch up with Patrick when he finally is about to rid himself of his enormous debt. He still wants to make movies, but goes about it in a completely different way - more humbly, and with smaller stakes. He's disillusioned, but he's still dreaming.
In lieu of a proper trailer (which I will provide as soon as we have one), please enjoy this teaser trailer we put together a couple of weeks ago. It features none other than yours truly:

Sorry for the self-indulgence, I just wanted to share this. I'm pretty excited. :)

Very happy for you, crimestick! No wonder you're giddy. Congratulations.
-
GOOD GUYS sWedIeN!
(the best I could do)
-
Congratulations crimestick!
Where was that filmed? It looks like South Dakota.
Besides acting in the film, did you also direct or write it?
-
Fantastic, 'Stick!
-
It's a documentary, so there's not much Acting going on in the film (even though it features plenty of hams). I'm not even in it that much, the teaser was made as something to feed the people who kept asking us about it. (It's shot in the desert outside Las Vegas, Nevada.)
I co-write and co-direct the documentary with my friend Jesper. We (the entire crew consists basically of the two of us) prefer to spit responsibilities like this: he's the Producer, I'm the Editor (in the newspaper sense, cause that's where I'm from). Jesper also serves as DP.
-
I'm really happy for you. The money and distribution is the hardest part of these things. The paper work is intimidating. I can't imagine what a relief it is to finally realize your vision like this.

Looks awesome, Crimestick. Keep us appraised of any NY area screenings.
-
im jealous. in a good way.
con.grat.ulations. crimstick. how do you say this in swedish...gratulationer?
-
Gratulationer is very formal. Usually you just say grattis.
Thanks for all the encouraging words, guys.
-
A part of me hopes it's just you silently wandering around the desert for a couple of hours, like that movie Gerry.
The shot in the teaser looks lovely! Which camera did you use?
I'm very happy for you and, like a previous poster, more than a bit envious.
Keep us posted!
-
congratulations, buddy. :)

The shot in the teaser looks lovely! Which camera did you use?
We've been using a Panasonic P2 (http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/p2-hd/index.asp) for most of the shoot, including the desert stuff, but for the last couple of weeks we've been using the much talked-about Red One (http://www.red.com/cameras), with simply breathtaking results. The only reason we didn't use the Red sooner was cause it took forever to be delivered.
-
Did you have to rent it?
-
Rented the P2, bought the Red One (but that was already in the works regardless of the doc).
-
looking forward to seeing this doc, crimestick.
-
i second that. cant wait to see it.

I'm in Stockholm editing this thing now.
Here's a trailer:

It's very talky, and in Swedish, so it's probably not very interesting for most of you. Sorry about that. I'm working on a subtitled version.
It's also available in glorious hi-res here (http://www.sendspace.com/file/whlpre) (might be interesting for RED nerds).
Here's a screenshot from a therapy session we filmed (click to enlarge):

Cool! The high tech Internet translation widget just told me that the title is "Film self nots am speaking if längre." Kinda weird, but whatever!
How do you say, "Oh, hello, there! I didn't see you come it." in Swedish? Oh, wait, I can tell you: "äsch , god dag, där! JAG gjorde icke se du komma it." Which translates right back to "oh , good afternoon , there! SELF did not see you come it. " Yay, Internet!
Also, I like that in Youtube the top related video is "Bill O'Reilly Flips Out."
-

I like that too.
It's called "Filmen jag inte pratar om längre", which translates to "The Film I'm No Longer Talking About".
-
Congratulations, Crimestick!!!
I know for a fact that a number of FOTs who don't speak Swedish happen to love films that are fairly talky and entirely in Swedish.
-
I know this was mentioned quite a few posts back, I'm curious where outside Vegas you shot?
I live in Vegas so that's why I'm curious.

Really. Ingmar Bergman is one of my favorites. Anyway, the trailer looks great. I like the music towards the end.

The premise and footage seem awesome so far, Martin. I'm looking forward to a possible dubbed/subtitled version.
-
Awesome! I can't wait to see it.
-
Wow, looking great Martin!
-
Really good! I like the part where the chocolate sauce ran down that one guys face and the one room that was covered in strawberry syrup. I fast forwarded through a lot of it, but it looks delicious, so keep it up! A couple of things (aside from that cool dude with a beard walking around on a rock) remind me of that SNL sketch Sprockets, but I think that's racist so I apologize for my hate speech. It was unintentional.
-
I like the music towards the end.
We like it too! It's all original music by one of the guys from obscure Swedish pop-rockers First Floor Power.
-
The trailer with English subtitles:

Disclaimer about the subs: they were rather sloppily done, on an empty stomach. So my apologies for any fuck up.

Here's the English-subbed trailer on YouTube:

This actually looks really awesome, like something I'd want to see even if I didn't know you. I love the footage of whatever the original film was. Some classic lines, too:
"This project was to be the first in a long line of projects that would, ultimately change the world."
"You can fool yourself, if you just fool everybody else"
-
Hey guys, I just started a Facebook group about the documentary. Please join! (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=39727822219&ref=mf) I will be posting clips, trailers, photos, and info both in Swedish and English. Also, we got a rough estimate on when it's airing - in April (not that it affects anyone here, still exciting).
-
The Film I'm No Longer Talking About will have its world premiere (http://www.screendaily.com/ScreenDailyArticle.aspx?intStoryID=42454&Category=521) at the Gothenburg International Film Festival in January. GIFF is a fantastic spot to showcase a movie, it's the biggest festival around, and we're the closing film, which is a great honor. Out of competition, but still!
-
Congrats and continued success!
-
that's amazing. i hope we get to see it in the states.
-
C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S ! ! !
-
That's awesome, Martin.
I'm really looking forward to a DVD version of this. Or maybe a New York premiere?
-
If anyone can setup a venue, I'm all for a NY premiere. :)
I'll be in NY in March, but I doubt I'll be able to take care of subtitles etc by then.
-
Awesome news, hope it gets rave reviews.
-
Congrats, Martin! You should be very proud.
-
Extremely belated congrats and huzzahs, Martin.

I am very, very proud to announce the poster for Filmen jag inte pratar om längre:

The genius behind the illustration is my friend, Québécois animator and illustrator Maxime Gérin.
I can't tell you how much we absolutely LOVE the poster. We're just about to print a bunch of copies.
In other news: we just had our first press screening of the film. It went very well, after some technical difficulties almost forced us to cancel. And we had one walk-out!
Next weekend: the world premiere at the Gothenburg International Film Festival.

if you have extras, i want one. thats a brilliant poster.

I made a desktop wallpaper version because I wanted to use it as such. Martin, I hope you don't mind! I plan to make a huge profit off of these.

Returned from the Göteborg International Film Festival last night. The documentary was screened twice at the majestic Draken ("The Dragon") theatre, which holds about 750 people. We got a very good response from the crowd, they were with it from the get-go. Spent rest of the weekend reprazenting, doing interviews, and going to fabulous parties. The Finnish-themed one was the best: outside on a fucking freezing cold terrace - tons of champagne, an accordion-playing guy in the corner, and instead of peanuts, they handed out cigarettes.
Before you ask, here's some pics:

"The Presidential Handshake" - job well done.

How will the Conan O'Brien "Sweden only" commerical go over in Sweden?
It's on Hulu.com - I'm too lazy to post the link.
-
The tabloids tried to fake some outrage over it, but no-one was biting.
I thought it was pretty bland, but it's always great to see H. Jon Benjamin.
-
That's so cool it's just like ice.
Stay on groovin' safari,
Tor
-
Awesome, Martin! Ditto, stay on groovin' safari.
-
Martin, a huge congrats! You really should look into some venues here in NY, at the least so we FOTs can see this thing. I've always liked this place: http://www.quadcinema.com/
You book it, we'll fill the seats.

Yup, and I think entries are open for the Silverdocs festival here in Silver Spring/DC.
-
Silverdocs sounds very interesting. I'll definitely submit it there, thanks for the tip, Chris. If we get the Swedish Film Institute to support our submission it's even better (they are one of our backers, after all). Won't guarantee anything, obviously, but it won't hurt.
-
if this ends up in the states, im flying to wherever it is.
-
When will this premiere on Swedish television? Will it be on a public TV channel? Are they going to edit it?
Just curious.
-
The preliminary date for the TV premiere is somewhere in April-May. It will air on public television, the state-owned SVT (which is comparable to BBC in reach and domestic importance), as part of their (prestigious, if I may say so myself) series K Special, which features documentaries about arts & culture.
But right now we're actually talking to distributors about possibly getting it into theatres. In that case it'll have a brief, limited theatrical run, but it will postpone the TV premiere to September or something like that. More screenings at festivals will obviously also affect the air date.
The "theatrical" version is 72 minutes, but we need to cut it down to a "TV hour", ie 55 mins, before it airs. We will do the edit, SVT does not have the mandate to edit it in any way.
-
Holy god you guys gotta see this thing.
Martin, I know I'm your buddy so this might seem like friendly lip-service, but you made a truly outstanding movie, and I am in awe of you.
Wow.
-
Any ETA on when regular, North American slobs might see this? Is it doing a festival circuit?
-
It is, in the sense that I'm sending it out to potential festivals as much as I'm able to (and can afford; some of them charge a crazy amount just for submitting - Globians in Berlin wants like $350, for example). But it's not "doing the circuit" in the same way as a film with proper studio/distributor backup does. It's pretty difficult to navigate through the sea of festivals, and I'll gladly accept recommendations for interesting fests out there (must accept feature-length international documentary submissions).
So far I have sent out a couple of screeners to specific folks/FOT, but there will come a time when a proper DVD is made. Then I will be able to send out copies to anyone who wants one.
Dorvid: thanks again.
-
To my surprise, it doesn't seem too late to submit a film for the 2009 Montreal World Film Festival. They have a "Documentaries of the World" program. Entry fee is $100 CAD.
Registration and regulations:
http://www.ffm-montreal.org/en_info_insc.html
And if it's accepted, I'll be there to see it!
-
heres some info on indie memphis: http://www.indiememphis.com/callforentries.php
i apologize if this is not what youre looking for, Martin. im willing to overlook things that wont allow me to see this film on southern soil.
-
Fascinating news etc.
We got an airdate for the TV screening - September 2nd. The film will be shown on one of the two major SVT channels, which is the equivalent of BBC (state-funded public service television), and will probably also be streamed through their website for a month (sans English subs, though). We'll be trying to drum up some more domestic media attention for it when it happens. Unfortunately we need to edit the sucker down to a lean 58 mins to fit in a "TV hour". It's a drag but whatever.
Also, the same week I'm taking the film to a small Swedish film festival, which looks pretty sweet - nothing fancy but at least I'll get to show it to a crowd, which is always best. (Unfortunately this means I have to cancel my vacation to France, as I was planning on going that week.)
Also also, we're having a screening of it at the Cinematheque in Stockholm by the end of September - first and probably only theatrical screening in Stockholm. Very excited about that.
-
thats awesome, Martin!
personally, i cant wait for this thing to be on dvd so i can see it already.

HEY TORONTO!
Attention people of Toronto - the new feature film from my partner-in-crime Jesper Ganslandt, "Apan" ("The Ape"), will have its world premiere at TIFF in September. It will be screened in the Vanguard section. Jesper will be there - walk up to him and freak him out say hi.
-
That's great, Martin! The TIFF is a big deal.
-
Thanks to the great MOONSHAKE we now have a functioning website! Talk about overdue. Only in Swedish (so far):

If you're attending TIFF, make sure you see APAN / THE APE. Consider this an official endorsement. Watched it the other day - pretty goddamn fantastic. Very intense (in a good way), very Dardennes.

Exciting weekend coming up.
Today is the big TV premiere. At 8 pm this evening our national broadcasting corporation SVT will air the documentary, with two reruns planned for the next couple of days, plus an extended run via their online service. So prime time on one of their main channels, which is a big deal. Although: it's Friday night, and I don't expect too many people parking themselves in front of the TV to watch a depressing documentary about a failed movie, prime time or not.
Saturday and Sunday I'm hopping on the train bound for the Jönköping Film Festival, in the middle of Sweden, to screen the theatrical cut of the documentary to hopefully some people. There's a planned Q&A afterwards but who knows how many people will show up.
Also: looks like the DVD will feature some fun stuff. Still planning it, but I'm pretty excited about it.
-
Exciting! I hope a lot of people tune in.
-
Lycka Till!
Hälsningar från Finland, perkele!
-
every time you talk about this, Martin, i get depressed that i cant see it, but excited for its DVD release...so i can.
-
I feel like by this point you guys can only be disappointed by it. But I'll take my chances!
-
More info about The Ape for those who plan to attend TIFF:

(the doc gets a brief mention)
-
You did a documentary? Why haven't you mentioned it?
I kid, I kid.
-
Sorry.
-
Sorry.
No, no, I really was kidding. I think it's pretty amazing the number of documentarians, musicians, graphic artists, writers, playwrights, and so on there are among the FOT. I would definitely watch "Martin from Sweden"'s documentary.
It's cool that all this comes out of a radio show.

BUMP
Hey guys. Remember my documentary, The Film I'm No Longer Talking About? Maybe you're still sick of it from when I went on and on about it over two years ago? Well, let's talk about it some more. There's finally a DVD of this thing, after over a year of delays, technical difficulties, trouble finding the right manufacturer, trouble finding enough money in my wallet to pay for it, etc. We're distributing it ourselves (meaning, essentially, that my living room is now filled with DVDs). Keeping it simple. Someone orders a copy, I go to the post office. Supply is limited, as is most likely demand. But! We are very proud of the DVD. It's the real deal -- no home-made, ugly DVD-R business. And I'm still very proud of the film itself.
(http://img804.imageshack.us/img804/6138/dvdfront.jpg) (http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/4483/dvddisc.jpg)
The cover features Maxime Gérin's original poster artwork. We also made NEW! and IMPROVED! English subtitles. We even threw in some bonus features (although our Swedish audio commentary probably won't excite English-speaking audiences).
The DVD is region free (PAL). Should work on all standalone DVD players.
This DVD can be YOURS for the meager sum of $20 (USD), including shipping to the US/Canada/world (€15 for EU). I would have preferred a price tag of $15 or even $10, but sending stuff to the US from Sweden is outrageously expensive (sending one DVD is almost $10), and we have to at least try and break even on this thing.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in getting a copy, send me an email: martin@fasad.se.
Just wanted to put it out there: this exists.
SPECS:
FILMEN JAG INTE PRATAR OM LÄNGRE / THE FILM I'M NO LONGER TALKING ABOUT
Sweden, 2009. Documentary. 72 minutes. Region free DVD. PAL.
IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1380096/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1380096/)
This is the UNCUT THEATRICAL VERSION of the film, which so far has only been screened at a handful of film festivals around Scandinavia, following the world premiere at the Gothenburg Film Festival in 2009. The version that was shown on Swedish Television (SVT) in the fall of 2009 was a 58-minute long, made-for-TV version. This is the first and likely only DVD edition that will ever exist of THE FILM I'M NO LONGER TALKING ABOUT. In other words: a Collector's Item! :)
BONUS FEATURES:
- audio commentary by Martin Degrell and Jesper Ganslandt (Swedish)
- "Las Vegas"
- teaser trailer
- optional English subtitles

I liked it very much, and I'm not a big watcher of documentaries. It truly is a coming-of-age tale, and melancholy but funny as those tales so often are. Growing up is so humbling.
P.S. I wish the commentary were subtitled.

Oh, I figured.
