Title: Anyone else excited Mike Myers is going to be In the Actor's Studio?

I love a good trainwreck.

I can envision gloomier scenarios. I saw Charlie Sheen at the Actors' Studio last year when a co-worker gave me an invite at the last minute. Now that was a ticket I wouldn't have paid money for. But I'm a fairly easygoing guy who'll go along with most things, and it wasn't too painful to watch. I would tag along to see Mike Myers on stage there, and would probably reasonably entertained, but I doubt that I'd sit through an hour or whatever of the same televised show, unless it truly does turn out to be a train wreck.

Speaking of going along with most things, I was out with a bunch of friends today who decided to see The Happening. Like a damn fool, I tagged along. I did it mostly because my friends bust my chops practically all the time about being a cinematic snob.  But what a hunk of junk that thing was. All four of us, without discussing it until afterwards, considered walking out at various times during the movie. Looking at our watches the whole time hoping that the movie would end ASAP. One of my three friends said that he felt like calling American Express right afterward to demand a refund on the ticket he charged to his card, and I thought that's exactly what Tom would say. Whatever you do, don't waste your valuable time and money with that garbage. I think most FOTs would exercise better judgment than I did on this occasion.

I hope James Lipton says either "Yeah, baby, yeah", "Behave", or "Do I make you horny?" repeatedly.

I'm also really curious to hear more about his role as the Cat in the Hat.

"Can we......speak with....Austin............for a moment...?"

One of the most awkward things I've ever seen was when the cast of the Simpsons was on and he made them all do practically the whole interview in character. Sooo embarrassing.

I read an interview with Mike Meyers somewhere recently, and the last question was if there was going to be another Austin Powers film, and instead of saying no he was like, "Well, it's not written yet." YET. Thanks. I can't wait to see him saying "Yeah, baby" in 2015 when he's eligible for AARP.

There was a Vanity FAir piece on him years ago, when Austin Powers 2 was coming out, and he did a photo shoot for the piece and everything, and it painted him as a borderline lunatic.  I actually felt it was a bit unfair.  It also painted him blue, as he was blue a-la Krishna for the shoot.  It was pretty mean-spirited to have this guy do a bunch of goofball comedy poses painted blue and then have a really long piece about what a kooksville creep he is, but that's vanity fair I guess.

"His unique brand of humor — driven by outsize, absurdist characters, sight gags, and elaborately constructed and at times esoteric wordplay"

Hm, I must have missed all of that elaborately constructed and at times esoteric wordplay that was going on during the 55 minutes he spent rubbing his nipples in a rubber fat suit and going "Ahhm so faaat!!!" in the last Austin Powers movie. Or was that it? It must have gone over my head.

Am I really the only one who will fess up to laughing - hard - at all 3 Austin Powers movies? Where did this universal Mike Myers hatred come from?

But yes, I agree, the Love Guru does look pretty stupid.

i was watching wayne's world on a lazy sunday afternoon and i imagined myself showing wayne/mike myers the love guru, intently watching his face, waiting for his own disappointment in what he would become.

...assuming he would be disappointed.

The first Austin Powers movie is funny, although it fell into the "comedies that annoy me because I'm sick of hearing people's terrible impressions" category for me.  I haven't seen it in probably 7 years so I can't say if it still holds up for me.  The sequels, however, were just awful.  Personally, I don't really hate Mike Myers, I'm just disappointed with the garbage he's been putting out for the last decade, especially since most of them seem like blatant cash-grabs.

And no matter how bad the Love Guru, and Zohan for that matter, look, I'm betting Eddie Murphy's new movie is 100x more excruciating.

I love Wayne's World, and I loved Austin Powers when it came out.  I think Austin Powers is a genuinely funny movie.  But I also agree that those sequels are terrible.  Austin Powers 2 almost literally smells bad, that's how much it stinks.

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.

Wow, when even Harry Knowles describes your movie as "astonishingly rancid", it's probably time to call it a career.  The rest of his review cracked me up because his writing manages to be beyond hyperbolic even when he's trashing a movie. Glad he clarified that it's not quite as bad as the Holocaust...  http://aintitcool.com/node/37138

Dana Stevens from Slate also was pretty unambiguous in her review.

This tale of a guru who brings joy to all who meet him is the most joy-draining 88 minutes I've ever spent outside a hospital waiting room. In the course of those long minutes, Myers leads you on a journey deep inside himself, to the source from whence his comedy springs—and it's about as much fun as a tour of someone's large intestine.

Also, Myers' appearance on The Daily Show was pretty not funny.

Can't wait to see what the Movie Boy has to say...

The Movie Boy does it again!  Some highlights:

Quote
"The Love Guru" still feels like a fairly pedestrian, slap-dash piece of work—but the tone is so light and goofy that it's difficult to imagine anyone getting offended by its onslaught of bathroom humor, penis gags, midget jokes, elephant sex, and Hindu-flavored satire. If such things can be considered good-natured, then that's how they come off here.

Turning a failure into a somewhat likeable experience is Mike Myers himself, whose flagrant mugging and joy of performing are part of his charm.

Subtler details, such as the way Pitka moves around on his motorized pillow and the devilishly clever use of Chris Isaak's "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing," are cute. The same goes for the oddly catchy sitar covers Mike Myers does of "9 to 5," "More Than Words" and "The Joker," and the fitting cameo by "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" star Mariska Hargitay.

Guru Pitka owns "The Love Guru," as well he should, but so little care has been brought to who and what surrounds this quirkily original character that it almost feels like a one-man show with an outline rather than a script. As a brisk, frothy summer comedy, audiences could do worse—they could even do worse this very same release weekend, with the Steve Carell misfire "Get Smart"—but there should be no expectations of it sticking in the fond forefront of their memories longer than a few minutes after it's over.

FINALLY, some movie has the guts to stand up to us Hindus. It's about time, all that Hindu fundamentalism and religious violence you hear about.

That Slate spoilers podcast was hilarious, especially when they seriously consider the fact that Myers might be "mildly retarded".

ESPN.com had a great article with Myers' 15 1/2 reasons why this is his best film yet.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=alipour/080620&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab6pos1

Some of my favorites:
Quote
2) THERE'S A JOKE A MINUTE, AND MANY OF THEM SOUND FUNNY: "What can I say? I'm English [by heritage], and we like silly comedies. I like super, super intellectual jokes, and I like super, super dumb jokes. Like farting in a cup."

Quote
6) TIMBERLAKE, BABY! "Justin plays Jacques 'Le Coq' Grande, a French-Canadian goalie for the L.A. Kings and the, uh, most well-endowed player in the NHL. I first met Justin at a 'Shrek the Third' party. He was so hilarious. He and I did comedy bits for two hours, even after everyone had gone home. Ever since, I had in the back of my mind that someday I'd write something for him. Justin came to play. His French-Canadian accent is spot on, and his Tony Esposito butterfly stance is completely authentic. The man is made of talent. But is Justin well endowed? I wouldn't have any firsthand knowledge of that."

Quote
12) THE BACKLASH FROM THE HINDU COMMUNITY? "It's one dude. And he hadn't seen the film. When he sees it, he'll see that the philosophies in this film are completely made up, like the Force in 'Star Wars.'"

[Editor's note: Hindu groups have, in fact, protested how the movie portrays their religion.]

the two reasons that praise Jessica Alba have to be bogus, right?

4) ALBA ISN'T JUST GREAT TO LOOK AT … "We had mutual friends, and I heard only the loveliest things about her. This is how we came to have a meeting of the minds about this movie. As it turns out, Jessica is a great comedian, a great actress and a lovely, lovely person."

5) … BUT, BOY, SHE'S GREAT TO LOOK AT! "When Jessica came on set, there were audible gasps. Honestly, when you see her, you can't believe how beautiful she is. And yes, she's a very good kisser. It was entirely professional, though."
