I'm liking it.
-
All podcasts jumped the shark back in '98.
:o
-
I love Todd Glass, but the podcast is a good example of how to do a bad podcast: poor sound quality which isn't helped when they neglect to speak into their mics half the time, no real focus or purpose to the show (I know that's sort of the concept, but...), doing it while very stoned (I don't judge. I just think it makes for a bad show - I'm looking at you, Benson!).
-
It's good until they get all serious. Not that I can't handle a nice debate every once in a while, but they take on issues that are pretty obvious and easy.
The Norm MacDonald episode is one of the best start-to-finish podcasts I've heard ever, though. When Todd asks Norm about Family Guy, holy moly...

I thought their sound was the best of the recent crop....
you should listen to Paul Goebals (sp) show, their sound is horrid.
I like Todd Glass going off on the things he's passionate about, the other people would do well to reign him in just a smidge though.

Norm seemed like bit of a prick I was wondering why they were all being so deferential to him.

This is the episode that made me unsubscribe, indirectly, because hearing it made me realize how entertaining the show could be, but isn't. If Norm was a regular I'd gladly listen, even though that episode was as sloppy and unfocused as any other.

I was thinking about checking it out but then I heard them on Benson's I Love Movies podcast and couldn't imagine what an hour plus would've been like. Basically it comes down to having a finite number of listening hours in my day and too many podcasts already filling it. I'll probably check out episodes that have guests of interest though.

Couldn't agree more. I do like listening to Todd Glass' very unique way of making points, so I skip through it.

I haven't actually listened to one since the Norm episode. I'm with Jouster though. I thought it had lots of promise, but the audio is bad to awful, and the Norm episode while good (maybe great?) in parts, really hurt because of the lack of focus and production stuff. Plus Norm almost didn't even seem to want to be there at all.
The new I Love Movies really burnt me out on Glass and Dore I think too, and yes they were way too high. Although Doug is actually funnier when he's really high I think, so maybe it's just Jimmy and Todd.

I wonder why he's so set on doing it live.
-
I kind of like it, but I am not sure exactly why. It's like eavesdropping on some funny guys who are unaware they're doing a show. I wouldn't bet on it lasting too much longer, though.
I like "You Look Nice Today" more, but I could also see some of the people here finding it really irritating.
-
I just started listening to the Norm MacDonald episode of this after reading this thread. I gave up after about 5 minutes because I couldn't really hear them properly. They seem like funny guys though.
-
Odd, I don't find the sound to be that bad. Maybe you guys need to get a new hutPod.

Who, Doug? It's a good venue for that, most of his eps are pretty tight ships, he keeps things on point etc. I dunno. Good to hear an actual audience laugh at jokes too?

That's what I'm thinking
sounds fine to me...

personally I like radio to be conversational and less performance.

I'm with Jouster. I unsubscribed somewhere around the fifth episode.

I don't know, I think that beating children is a pretty good idea. And I love Sinbad.
-
I still listen to it. It's not great. But it's enjoyable. It's basically just nice. and sometimes I laugh.

Maybe I was just primed to hear the crummy production, and wouldn't have noticed it otherwise. I'm very impressionable.

You guys listening to Mike Schmidts new podcast?

Yeah, I enjoy it most of the time.

Where do you guys find the time to listen to all these podcasts, music and watch all the good TV? I have enough on my hands with music and I'm not even a busy person.

I have a really hard time keeping up, I must say. I really ought to unsubscribe to a couple of the 30+ ones I subscribe to. I have a huge backlog of stuff, and for a control freak like me that's unbearable. That's one of the reasons Comedy and Everything Else had to go - it's casually enjoyable, but not enough substance. I got tired of Guys With Feelings too, a few months back. When you invest in something, eventually it really should start giving something back. I'm currently on the fence with Stephen Fry's podcast, Battleship Pretension, and a couple others.
I like Mike Schmidt's podcast though. I like how his mind works, and I'm fascinated by his personality. And I have a friend who's not a comic, but otherwise is a deadringer for Mike when it comes to behaviour and attitude towards the world.
-
I love Mike Schmidt and think he's very funny, but I can't listen to his podcast. One guy just talking to himself is really weird for me to listen to.
-
A lot of the podcasts I subscribe to never update so it's no trouble. (Stephen Fry, for instance.)
I listen to podcasts, The Best Show archives, and audiobooks when I'm doing chores or commuting. Dog walking, cleaning the house, whatnot. I'm basically listening to music or spoken word content at all times when I'm alone or working. I have the least trouble keeping up with this stuff, because it so easily fills gaps.
I have a big backlog of everything else-- RSS feeds, TV shows, movies, books, music. Most kinds of music I can listen to while doing other stuff-- other kinds of music require more attention. Unfortunately it's books and movies that tend to get procrastinated the most, which makes me really tempted to take some drastic cutting back steps.
The only TV shows I watch are either downloaded, on DVD, or increasingly on Hulu. On the one hand, it's good in that I don't channel surf. But it's bad because a backlog starts to develop of them-- in ye olden times if you missed a show, you just missed it.

I have the kind of job where I can just sit at my desk with headphones on posting on message boards all day.
-
I have to have background noise all the time when I work or I go nuts/lose focus/get distracted and do other stuff besides work - like post on message boards. In exchange though I think the last movie I saw in the theaters was There Will Be Blood, and I torrent/tivo most of the TV I occasionally watch.

My job gives me the time to surf the nets all day but I can't listen to anything.

i have a similar job, though i don't have access to the internet at my computer (i work on an 'intranet'). i can just plug in my headphones and tear through eight hours of bbc (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/history/inourtime/), best shows, npr (http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_detail.php?siteId=5495231), technology (http://thetalkshow.net/), comedy (http://youlooknicetoday.com/), history (http://bingethinkinghistory.libsyn.com/) and sports (http://onthedlpodcast.com/Blog_Podcast/Blog/Blog.html) podcasts when i'm not listening to music or audiobooks. i honestly don't know i'd be able to stay sane at my job without my ipod.
-
altec lansing im207. Awesome work speaker. Small, great sound, battery powered, great industrial design (no unnecessary buttons or controls).
I've been listening to music all day at a low volume from one of these at work.
-
who's still listening?
-
It never updates. And when it does it's not been that great.
A Best Show reinvigorated by the H Man will wipe all of these "podcasters" off the face of the earth.

I can handle when Todd gets all serious because he can make nuanced, original points that you don't hear every day. Jimmy Dore on the other hand, when he starts talking politics and religion, is just spouting generalizations to me, with no jokes--it's boring.
The Mike Schmidt podcast is way too bleak. I think he's he's a comic prodigy. He's quick as hell and a great joke writer, but I find his personal life too disturbing.
Podcasts I like are the Dork Forest, I Love Movies, Filmspotting, Elvis Mitchell, and Never Not Funny has just gone through the roof entertainment wise since they started charging--totally awesome.

You said it on Mike Schmidt I don't get why he's so bent on doing the single person podcast, I hope he breaks down and gets some more people.

I actually don't really mind him doing it by himself, it sets him apart from the "couple of comedians getting together and talking about whatever" format. Not all the episodes are homeruns, but there are enough great moments to keep me checking it out every week.
-
Comedy and Everything Else: I like it, but it never updates. And Todd's neurosis are what make him funny, but he does get a little too serious sometimes.
40 Year-Old Boy: He's hilarious, but I can't take the guy-talking-to-himself shit. It's depressing.
Never Not Funny: This season has been a home run so far. Jimmy is great, and they even got Patton on last week! It was great.

this whole comedy podcast genre is a little incestuous

Oh yea, I forgot about the Best Show plug on NNF.

I wouldn't expect Best Show fans to necessarily like 40YOB, but I hardly ever find it depressing. When he gets on himself, I usually relate enough that its not so depressing. I often find that funny enough. And that usually fits into the part of the show I love, which is when he tells stories.
The only time I find the show off-putting is when he gets very angry about his wife. I also understand and relate to that, but I can imagine his wife listening. There are couples that fight and say things like that to each other (and I'd imagine Schmidt and his wife are that way), but at least then its saying that to the person. People also say awful things about their spouses when they are venting to friends, but hearing him do what sounds like a combination of venting to friends, confronting her and trying to be funny is real creepy.
-
I'd like to preface this....
-
I'm fully off the GlassDore since this thread started, listening to one of the ones after Norm, or maybe the Doug episode, and I'd just had it - unsubscribed! (although I keep checking for updates to see if there are any good guests to lure me back in, the comedy podcast junkie that I am)
However, I've recently gotten back into NNF and catching up on S3 some. I'm very quickly remembering why I got off board with it in S2 though, (no, not the premium. although that didn't help. and Jimmy calling people faggots all the time doesn't help either) but Patton plus his Scharpy plug made for a nice episode.

ur listening illegally?
Let me preface by saying I am too
-
Technically (wait, actually) illegally, someone gave me a couple eps. But I was planning on buying the season down the road just to support the show etc, so I don't feel that bad about my crime.
I give AST my monies all the time, I can boost a couple eps off my friends Zoone right?

only in the bizarro world where people with "lil'" before their names are good for anything but to laff at.

PFT is on the newest episode. One of the few people I can listen to for 2 hrs. and not get bored.

This is a must-hear episode. I found PFT's views on religion and politics to be spot on.
-
ooh, thanks for the heads up.
-
I don't know about you guys but I think their shows have been awesome lately. They may be hitting their stride.
-
I kind of got douche chills when that "very special episode" arrived recently so I deleted it quickly and unsubscribed. PFT may bring me back!
-
This is actually the first full episode I've listened to, I just kept my subscription in iTunes in case they had a guest I was interested in. The sound quality has gotten better at least.
-

Go back and listen to the one you skipped.

The special episode was horrifying. But this PFT episode. Top notch.

horrifyingly good, Todd Glass ran circles around Goebel.
I guess if you're a big fan of beating kids you may want to skip it..
