I've mentioned before how there are few things sadder than a Barenaked Ladies cruise. Well, I read this article (http://www.radaronline.com/from-the-magazine/2008/06/rock_cruises_bare_naked_ladies_ships_and_dip_guster_01.php) in this month's Radar Magazine, fully expecting the author to recount a HILARIOUS nightmare. It turned out he kind of had a pretty great time, despite the fact that he is not a fan and also expected the worst.
Well, check out the line-up for 2009 (http://www.shipsanddip.com/lineup.php). I could not care less about the Barenaked Ladies. In fact, I think I actively dislike them. I say "think" because I'm pretty sure Barenaked Ladies and Smash Mouth are the same band, and I don't know which band is responsible for which hateful song. But... the Weakerthans? I kind of like them! The Mountain Goats? Oh man, is Wurster signed up?? SLOAN‽ OH WOW. I will attend if I can room with Mary Cobham (http://www.justfriends.ca/maughams/Music/Jay/center.htm). F'real.
Seriously, who's going to sign on next? Ted Leo??

I have yet to be asked. :-\

It's a beautiful performance, if only because the band seems to be as bleary and emotionally bankrupt as the fans.
sounds like the vacation of a lifetime?

Klosterman had an essay about being on a classic rock cruise, it was pretty interesting.
I also like a couple of these bands, though... Laurie, does this mean we're getting old and/or uncool?

Great Big Sea is not a good band, but I have a soft spot in my heart for them anyway because they're the only mildly successful band to come out of my family's home island of Newfoundland. The fact that they play some traditional songs about fishing and drinking rum doesn't hurt either. Nonetheless, a lot of bands do the celtic tinged rock thing a whole lot better.
This event has a decidedly Canadian bias with The Weakerthans, Sloan, The Barenaked Ladies, The New Odds, The Brothers Creegan and GBS. What else does the rock cruise have in mind? Midnight Buffet with Broken Social Scene?

Now appearing on the Lido Deck...Chixdiggit. Chixdiggit on the Lido Deck.

If there's ever a Techno Cruise, headlined by Underground Resistance, let me know.

It takes a healthy dose of self-awareness to dub your solo work The Vanity Project -- and Barenaked Ladies' frontman Steven Page has plenty of that. It helps if that work holds enough sharp hooks and smart songcraft to make it clear that the moniker is anything but accurate -- and the self-titled debut from The Vanity Project most assuredly packed with both.
Groan.

Yeah, that was in one of his books and originally in Spin a few years ago. It seems back then rock cruises were only for the Journey/Styx/REO Speedwagon type bands. Now I've seen a variety of jam bands doing weekend cruises and I think John Mayer had one.
Great choices for other bands by Barenaked Ladies, especially since they usually tour with acts like Alanis Morrisette or Counting Crows

I can't believe I'm half tempted to go on a Barenaked Ladies cruise.

Hey, for the chance to play shuffleboard with Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, I'd be down.
-
I know it's not a cruise but i have the same mixed feelings about http://www.booshfestival.com/
Like I probably never would have gone if I was in the UK but now I'm not I sort of wish I could have gone.
I once went to a folk festival in Holland by mistake and had the greatest time.

Oh, I don't know, one of them had a great appearance in that Rat Race movie.
Oh, God, that was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I remember saying to myself, you know, Smashmouth really doesn't make this any worse.
-
The Queers & Agent Orange recently did these rock cruises too.

Screech?

I don't think they name check it in song, but when they sing 'The Old Black Rum' I can only assume they mean the infamous Screech.

The only reason i am not signing up for this now is that if I was actually on a boat with the Weakerthans I know I would just spend my whole time keeping a slight distance that would probably end up being creepier than if I just went up and talked to them. OH MY GOODNESS.

Emma! Let's go together. I'll stalk Jay Ferg, you stalk... John Samson? I guess?
-
Sounds absolutely perfect.
Um, can I borrow some money?
-
I'm waiting or the Sea CRRRuise, featuring Captain Emil Beaulieau, Merzbow, Massona, PDM, etc....
That would have to be a sign of the apocalypse.

I happen to be wearing my Weakerthans shirt right now- they just don't seem like they would be suited to a cruise to me. I guess I'm stereotyping Canadians- sorry. :(
-
Hey, no worries. I'm getting stereotyped all over the place around here (guys I'm in New York! It's so awesome!). My RA doesn't even know my name, I think; she just goes "Hey, CANADA!" Weird, because "Canada" is probably a more complicated name than "Emma" in the end.
Here's the thing: I think the Weakerthans, while somewhat shy-ish, would be extra fun drinkers/shuffleboard players. We already know they're curling champions, right? I can see them being fun on a cruise. Though that might just be because I am ridiculously in love with them and would hang out with them on a trash heap if that's where stuff was going on.
-
That's true- they do seem like they would be genuinely enthusiastic about whatever the cruise activity of the moment was (I'm sure the karaoke would go well). Certainly it would be better than the Bud Light cruise I keep seeing ads for- that just sounds absolutely terrible.
-
I don't know if I would enjoy a cruise. I get massively seasick. And the idea of a cruise and rock and roll somehow don't match up for me. It feels weird. But then again, cruises have always struck me as weird by themselves.
I would deal with the seasickness if either Cher, Dolly Parton, or David Bowie did a Rock Cruise. Or all of them together. Omygod. I would die.
