Title: Amusing quotations
Post by: yesno on June 29, 2008, 02:21:37 PM
"I know only two tunes: one of them is 'Yankee Doodle', and the other one isn't."

Ulysses S. Grant
As quoted in Our Contemporary Composers: American Music in the Twentieth Century (1941) by John Tasker Howard, Arthur Mendel, p. 244

(I read it in Oliver Sack's Musicophilia)

I know this is a little Jay Leno-ish, but I tittered at work on Friday when I saw this in our weekly newsletter:

Please be advised that starting today, Friday, June 27 until Wednesday, July 9th hoe ramming will be taking place at the site of the new underground parking garage at Tindall Field.

"Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast" -- Oscar Wilde.

I taped this on the refrigerator door at a rooming house where I lived when I was twenty-one (the Beacon Hill Friends House--know it, Bostonians?).  When people tried to speak to me in the morning, I would simply point at the notice.  Worked pretty well.

I JUST read that book too, and was equally struck by this quote. For whatever reason I kept laughing when I tried to read it out loud.

(Paraphrasing here because multiple versions exist online.)

Oscar Wilde's famous last words uttered on his deathbed.

"Either this wallpaper goes or I do."

"Say you sue me because you say my dog bit you. Well, now this is my defense:

My dog doesn't bite.
And second, in the alternative, my dog was tied up that night.
And third, I don't believe you really got bit.
And fourth, I don't have a dog."

"My definition of a hipster? I have no idea what a hipster is in 2008? I don’t think that term has a concrete definition at all. I think that it may have like in 1996 or 1997, in 2008 I think it’s a blanket term used by the media to describe a certain demographic between the ages of 18 and 34 that doesn’t really exist in concrete terms. I mean I sort of know what you mean, but also we’re in a day and age where my mom is a hipster. So it’s not like that term or somebody being regarded as a hipster should in no way in 2008 be seen as some badge of integrity or some cool thing. I don’t think it means anything right now."

I think that it may have like in 1996 or 1997, in 2008 I think it’s a blanket term used by the media to describe a certain demographic between the ages of 18 and 34 that doesn’t really exist in concrete terms.

Personally, back in 96-97 my friends and myself tossed around the term "scenester" rather than "hipster".  Scenester was also used as a derogatory term, even though by most accounts we would have been considered scenesters also.

Both "hipster" and "scenester" are loosely analogous with "poseur" in a postmodern sense, whereas we have all become poseurs due to the evolution of counterculture towards the inauthentic ~ which was largely unavoidable.

“We are absolutely thrilled that the critics and our viewers have embraced True Blood,” said HBO's Michael Lombardo, president of the Programming Group and West Coast Operations, in a prepared statement. “Alan Ball has done it again – made an addictive series that is unlike any other.”
