Title: TBSOWFMU on Wikipedia
Post by: Jimmy on June 30, 2008, 07:58:05 PM
How come there isn't a Wikipedia article on TBS?  I always look there to see what it says about the show and then I realize there isn't an article.  I know there is the FOTpedia, but I think someone should do one on Wikipedia.

I think you might need one of those internet connections to do that.

i think Petey tried to create one but it got deleted because apparently the show wasn't noteworthy enough or something.

however, that doesn't stop there being articles for Tom Scharpling, Jon Wurster, Scharpling & Wurster, and Stereolaffs.

in fact, at one point, there were TWO S&W articles (i think one with "&" and one with "and") that i guess got merged because someone noticed they were both there.

the only reason 7SD has an article is because of the new york times thing from last year.

That's correct about the petey thing.  Some wisenheimer argued that it was too POV and that it should be part of the WFMU entry.  I would imagine if somebody did it again it could probably stick.

To get past the deletionists on Wikipedia nowadays, you need some media mentions.  The NY Times article on the Best Show, coupled with blog mentions and a list of some of the famous people who've been on it (PFT, Tim and Eric, Patton, Gaffigan, Gib Benson, etc) should be enough.  Go fer it.

Geeze, how many fake...er, honorary doctorates does one need?

It is pretty insane that they removed the Best Show page.  It seems like a lot of regional and local TV and radio shows have pages on wikipedia.

Take a look at the greatest wikipedia page of all time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chi_Chi%27s

For a while there was a Wikipedia page that listed every single episode of the Colbert Report, complete with the introductory phrase, guest, topics, etc... I'm surprised it didn't list what color tie he was wearing. Certainly the entirety of the Best Show is more encyclopedia-worthy than that.

Clearly.  It just doesn't make sense when dinky horrorshows warrant interspace.

I personally added the part about Jon Wurster, but I don't know how to do citations or whatever.  I guess this will just be a working progress.

Over the past 7 years, Tom Scharpling has given himself many titles, including Tommy Tornado, El Goodo, The Kid, The Queen, the Hero of the Disenfranchised, and The Neil Hamburger of Freeform Radio.

Go go FOTs!

I'm a wikidummy myself, and a Best Show noob by standards appropriate for wiki-documenting, so I'll just watch and admire (and probably learn more about the show in the process).  :)

there is no "they" really. Just add it back and address the complaints. Cite to sources like the times that discuss the show. I'd do it myself but I'm uncomputered at the moment.

Oh man! I was actually wondering what the plural was when I posted that. Logically I thought it should be FOT but I decided to go with FOTs for some reason.

ANYWAY, I am so proud of the FOT.

I'd like to add the "No. of episodes" and "Opening Theme."  If anyone knows how many shows there have been or what the name of the band that does the "Best Show" song is, let me know.  I don't want to count the number of shows on the archives if I don't have to.

Also, was the first official Best Show aired on November 30, 1999?  I know there was a music show before the talk show, but was this the first date of the talk show?
Title: Re: TBSOWFMU on Wikipedia
Post by: yesno on July 06, 2008, 09:56:06 PM
Themeweavers, LLC does the opening music (the song that is then used as bed music)-- but I don't remember who does the "People's Theme."

edit:  And I don't have time now, but if you copy the whole text of the archive page and paste it into Numbers or Excel, it will give each line its own numbered row.  You can then delete the superfluous rows, and then you'd delete the ones where other DJs filled and, and then listen to the archive for the older shows that have no description to see if they were really Best Shows or not.  That's the only way I could think to get the number of shows easily.

As for number of Best Shows so far, my best count is 327 as of July 1, 2008, counting the November 30, 1999 date in the archive.

The first show was on October 10th, 2000. I have no idea what that 1999 thing is doing on the archives, but the reason there's no 'listen' attached to it is because it doesn't exist.

History!

Tom.

Okay, I fixed the "Air Dates."  I'll be updating the "No. of episodes" sometime soon.  I should probably just recount.
