Title: Gyod blasted Chicago infrastructure....
Post by: dania on July 07, 2008, 10:31:16 PM
I cannot stand this city sometimes.  There are so many real safety issues that Chicago's stupid authorities could easily address and fix before tragedy happens, but they don't give a shit.  All they care about is money and that becomes more and more apparent to me every day.
FOR instance:
All the street lights went out on my block some time last night and have they fixed it yet?  Of course not.  It would take them 6 ounces of effort to get the people needed to fix it within a few hours.  Right now, it's near pitch black outside which is scary and dangerous.
The fence in my neighbor's yard is pretty much bent down to the ground.  Meanwhile, a rabid pitbull that got loose once and attacked my friend's dog hangs out back there pretty much all day.  I've called 311 about it and guess what happened?  Not one gyod damn thing.  It would take them maybe 10 ounces of effort to hire someone to build a fence.  They don't give a shit though, not even considering the brutal attack on a woman by 9 pitbulls that got loose a few months ago.
Fuckin asshole Chicago authorities....

You braggin' or complainin'?  Had any crane collapses lately?  I rest my case. New York wins in shitty infrastructure problems so far this year, Dania. Just be thankful you've got two winning baseball teams.

I'm more interested in this new method of measuring effort in ounces.

Boy, Fido, that response could not have been more truthful.  I'm so sorry that I felt like letting off steam, no no! really, I am so sorry that I felt like talking about this.  Your crane collapse totally wins the Which-City's-Infrastructure-is-Worse Contest, because crane collapse is obviously not an accident but blatant negligence.  You have every right to be very proud of yourself for being subjected to such atrocities.  It's so horrible that the New York authorities' disregard for human life made them decide to purchase the cheap steel instead of the good steel.

jerk

Chicago is still #1 in passive aggression! REIGNING CHAMPS! U-S-A! U-S-A!

Take it easy, Dania.  I was kidding around.  No ill will intended whatsoever.

Your complaints about the city are very justified.  I'd be pissed off too.

Dania, you should call 311 immediately and let them know that the lights are out.

311 is the phone number to call for all civic issues that are urgent but non-emergencies.

Last week some kids were lighting off fireworks and suddenly our 3 lights on our block weren't working.  Those things may or may not have been related but it was totally creepy.  I made a phone call and the lights were on by the end of the night.  And I live in a not-completely-safe part of Logan Square.  It is a Police boxes on the lightposts type of neighborhood.  But they dealt with the problem ASAP.

Uh, I meant to say totally un-safe instead of tubular.  You got that, right?

It must be nice to live in a city with this "Infra-Structure" of which you speak. Snobs.

From what I've read about Chicago, slipping a C-Note to the Ward Boss usually gets these sort of things fixed.

That is EXACTLY where the city got it's slogan from; The City That Works.  No lie.

You think Chicago and Manhattan got problems?  Here in JC it isn't even safe for U-God to walk the streets...

I think Quebec could give most North American places a run for their money. I just drove through Montreal last weekend, and their bridges are truly terrifying.

Subway stations evacuated because of ceiling cracks, a major thoroughfare shut down due to a giant pothole and a Quebec town severed in two after its only bridge was deemed unsafe.

Such is life following the collapse of an overpass north of Montreal last September that killed five people — suddenly no risk is worth taking with the province's aging infrastructure. (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2007/09/04/qc-infrastructure0904.html)

And therein lies the major similarity and difference between Chicago and Boston... both cities are corrupt, but in Chicago, corruption actually accomplishes things.

Just to get dania angrier, I'll take the crane collapses and raise you my city's infrastructure nightmare 'The Big Dig (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dig_(Boston,_Massachusetts)#Problems)', a big expensive highway tunnel running under downtown that leaks and had a ceiling panel drop and kill a couple in their car.

Wow.  I hadn't heard that at all.  And I remember how chaotic that "Big Dig" was.  I'm sorry to hear that.

holy shit that is terrible about that big dig thing.

i think the good people over at 311 know my voice by now.  i call them about so much shit, like why can't i park on one side of the street for "streetcleaning" if they're not even going to actually clean the street, but just ticket a bunch of people.  hmmm.
i guess i'm referring more to people who are supposed to be in charge of shit but only care about certain neighborhoods if you know what i mean.  the lights were out for 3 nights straight before they finally fixed it, i called 311 on the first night and they were just like "it might take a few days".
