Title: Dear Graphic Designers:
Post by: KickTheBobo on July 18, 2008, 10:08:48 PM
...please stop using this fucking background in every other thing I see in print/web/tv. Enough is enough.

This was the ad that finally set me off (from this week's Providence Phoenix)

I agree. I catch myself wandering into that visual neighborhood when I am fresh out of ideas. You might as well credit the stock image disc you got that off of.

Not that it doesn't have it's uses, but jesus, over-design is worse than under-design. The designer should have realized the mistake they were making when they had to outline the type to make it legible.

Ha ha, I just noticed it was a Badfish flyer. The only thing that would have made this worse is if there was literally a picture of a fish on it... with a frown and an eyepatch to make it "bad."

Nice raver type.

this sort of thing doesn't surprise me... WBRU has the bad taste of a corporate rock radio station but with the lack of resources and talent of a college rock station.

I would like to know what percentage of FOTs are graphic or web designers or  cartoonists or animators or work in the graphic arts in some way. I bet it's about 40% of regular posters.

(my ladyfriend draws pitchers and makes fabric thingies so even I have some connection)

Art school dropout here.  Painter.  Haven't touched a paintbrush in years though.

I do work of that nature, and have wondered the same thing myself. This place is wonderfully creative in a refreshing and singular way, so it would totally make sense.

Same here. Web stuff. Painter with little time to take it back up, and waning interest. Maybe when I'm an old man I'll make crappy watercolors.

Art director/web designer.

I remember Tom saying something about FoT meetups being full of graphic arts people because they're the only ones who can sit all day wearing headphones listening to podcasts.

Yeah, I started a "what do you do while you listen to the best show" thread a while back because I am jealous of people who get to Fun the day away like that.  I work with words and can't process multiple language streams simultaneously-- which would be an awesome superpower.  I can't even listen to hip hop while working.  But I've had jobs before where I just blasted through audiobooks and the like.

I imagine that any meetup is going to be full of "freelancers" for scheduling reasons.

I thought maybe KickTheBobo was overstating this truth, and then I went to televisionwithoutpity, and check out their background graphic:
