The early-mid 60's are slowly fading away. Name your favorite 60's songs that were hits but never caught on as essential classics.
A few of mine:
The Fortunes- You've Got Your Troubles
Billy J. Kramer- Little Children
Joe Jones- You Talk Too Much
Jim Lowe- Green Door ( I think this is actually 50's)
Cascades- Rhythm of the Rain
-
RB Graves' "Take a letter Maria." You don't hear it too much on the doo-wop stations but it's solid gold.
-
Lou Christie "Lightning Strikes"
-
The Contours, "First I Look at the Purse"
Curse you, J. Geils Band!
Edit: A quick YouTube query to find a clip of one of my other favorite oldies songs...

...also unearthed this little horror:

Aaron Carter!

Ooh, nice one! There are a bunch I could pick but I'll limit myself to a couple (some of these may go back to the late 50s):
Endless Sleep - Jody Reynolds
I Found a Love - The Falcons
Lookin' For a Love - The Valentinos (also covered by J. Geils Band)
(I Wanna) Testify - The Parliaments
Fire - The Crazy World of Arthur Brown
Tallahassee Lassie - Freddie Cannon
Nite Owl - Tony Allen & the Champs

I always felt like The Kingsmen's version of Louie Louie never got the attention it deserved.

Are you being sarcastic? Everybody knows that song. If you would have said Little Latin Lupe Lu I'd be with you 100%

I don't know. I don't think most people even know that song. You never hear it on the radio. Or even in movies. It's really a lost '60s classic.

haha, it's definitely one of the most popular songs of the 60's. even black flag covered it!

I don't think so... maybe you're thinking of a different song. This one has a jangly guitar and the lyrics are almost impossible to understand. You should check it out.

The Cowsills - The Rain, the Park and Other Things
We Five - You Were On My Mind
The Music Machine - Talk Talk
Nazz - Open My Eyes

I was thinking the same thing but I didn't want to say anything. Maybe it's the difference in age between myself and the OP but I've heard the Kingsmen version of "Louie Louie" on oldies radio probably 1,000 times in my life and it's not like I spend every minute glued to oldies radio.
-
he's being facetious. louie, louie is the most overused song ever. high school marching bands play it!
was i the only one who thought that was really funny?

That's one of those oldies tunes that I can sing along to and know all the words to, yet had no idea the real name or artist. Thank you for reminding me.
About Louie, Louie -- that song's been immortalized in like 2 million movies (ex Animal House) and joanna's right -- it's a HS football game anthem now.

"I get along without you very well" by Nina Simone

We Five - You Were On My Mind
Yes!
The Jaynetts - Sally Go 'Round The Roses
Linda Scott - I've Told Every Little Star (I couldn't get this out of my head for about a month after watching Mulholland Drive)

I know. I don't know if I ever would have found that song if it wasn't for the movie and that would have been a shame.
-
The Jaynetts - Sally Go 'Round The Roses
Nice! Time to dig my 45 of that one out...
I don't know if it counts as a forgotten hit, but has anyone else heard Ted Taylor's version (the original, I think) of (Love Is Like A) Ramblin' Rose, which the MC5 murdered on Kick Out the Jams? That's another of my favorites. Once you've heard it, you'll understand why Wayne Kramer uses such a stupid voice when he sings it.
-
Okay, so I don't understand the brouhaha over my mentioning Louie Louie, but whatever.
I think one that's even more of a undiscovered classic is The Lion Sleeps Tonight by the Tokens. It's a really sweet song about a sleeping lion. I discovered it once on one of my dad's old albums.
I'll see if I can rustle up an mp3 of it.
-
Your dad was in the Tokens?
-
Your dad was in the Tokens?
No, but my nickname in high school was Token... Maybe that's what you're thinking of? That's probably what you're thinking of.

The Fortunes- You've Got Your Troubles

The Fortunes - "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again"
The Guess Who - "Laughing"
The Outsiders - "Time Won't Let Me"

-
The Crystals - He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/He_Hit_Me_(And_It_Felt_Like_a_Kiss))
This song makes me weepy and aroused at the same time. Don't judge.

-
- The Sonics, "Strychnine"
Oh hell yes.
-
Kyu Sakamoto - 上を向いて歩こう (Ue o muite arukō aka Sukiyaki)
Maybe my favorite song ever.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=RtXQ31F1A-k
-
Sam Cooke - "You Send Me"
I guess it's not overrated, it's probably properly rated and appreciated, but what a sweet song from a sweet guy who died too early.
-
The Louvin Brothers - Must You Throw Dirt in My Face
more Louvin Brothers - Knoxville Girl (a murder ballad hipsters might now from Nick Cave's version; it includes the following stanza;
"She fell down on her bended knees
For mercy she did cry
Oh, Willie dear, don't kill me here
I'm unprepared to die
She never spoke another word
I only beat her more
Until the ground around me
Within her blood did flow."
we play for keeps down here, yo.
I could play this game all day, but a few that come to mind are Ben Folds' Hospital Song, Blue Oyster Cult's Zen Archer, and let's go with The Majestic Twelve's Condoleeza Check My Posse.

This guy reviewed every top 10 song from 1966 (http://www.theilliterate.com/topten/archive_1966.html (http://www.theilliterate.com/topten/archive_1966.html)). I'd like to find the person who programmed our oldies station and smack them for not playing "I'm Your Puppet."

How have I not heard this song before now?
Also, Paul Revere & the Raiders should be remembered far more fondly than they are. I blame the uniforms.

an oldie but actually a newish oldie that never was.
-
The Litter: Action Woman
The Pretty Things: Midnight To Six Man
The Shocking Blue: Venus
Soupy Sales: Do The Mouse
The Kingsmen: Jolly Green Giant
The Who: The Good's Gone
Sam The Sham: How Do You Catch A Girl
Link Wray: take your pick
-
This has been covered by a Mick Collins band, which means it's officially hip.

Don't get me started on the Louvin Brothers, Dave. "I Wish It Had Been a Dream" never fails to get me all misty-eyed.
It's not obscure or anything, but Jan Bradley's "Mama Didn't Lie" has to be one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life.
Another good one: "The Madman Running Through the Fields" by Dantalion's Chariot.
Another "newish oldie that never was":
