Title: I Need A Clip! Help!!!
Post by: Tom Scharpling on July 28, 2008, 12:26:30 AM
Hello all -

I need to find a stand-alone clip from the show for an upcoming project. It needs to be 2-5 minutes long. It can be from ANY part of the program.

Your suggestions and information on the wheres and whens is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Tom.

Are you looking for something that encapsulates the show, or just a great moment?

Either one is fine if it's the right moment.

Thanks!

Tom.

I recommend the clip where Tom coaches Philly Boy Roy on the pronounciation of "Mayubinatorial."

That's pretty brilliant.

How about any of the "I got cut off" calls. I also like the animation Kick the Bobo did for Scharpling on Critics

I'm not really sure what you're looking for, but this is a favorite:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/qa9m7f

It's one of the Zeph calls (the third, I think - it's from the 9/26/06 show) - it's the one where Zeph admits to his porn addiction, talks about his preferred proportions of vodka and cola, and names his favorite superheroes. It's a little longer than you'd specified (about 6:20), though I suppose it could be edited.

I've always been a fan of Tom & Spike's Abbott & Costello routines.  There are several to choose from, but this one from 9/5/06 is great:

*****

Spike thought [Little Miss Sunshine] was a nice, cute movie, and he praised the performance of "the little girl" (Abigail Breslin) and Alan Arkin’s work as her grandfather. Tom hasn’t seen much of Arkin since M*A*S*H ended its run, so he was glad to see him back on the screen. Spike thinks Tom is confusing Alan Arkin with Alan Aldo from President Baseball. Spike reiterates that Alan Arkin is in the film, but Tom doesn't know who that is. Spike is surprised that Tom doesn’t know Arkin from The Russians Are Coming The Russians Are Coming. Tom adds to the confusion by asking Spike if it’s Alan Narkin, so Spike spells his last name: A-R-K-I-N. Now Tom gets it -- it’s the guy who’s in Little Miss Sunshine! Tom agrees that he’s very good. Spike points out that in addition to his acting, Arkin was once a member of The Tarriers, who did "Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots". Tom thinks this is a clothing company, but Spike says it was actually a song. Spike loses Tom with that one, so it's time to move on. Spike liked the cast across the board -- the mother, played by JeanToni Colette, Greg Kinnear, and the guy from The Office.

Spike: I always forget his name.
Tom: Ricky Gervais.
Spike: No, the American version of it.
Tom: Oh, okay, yeah, that guy is …
Spike: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, that guy.
Tom: Yeah, Stephen Colbert.
Spike: No. His name is Steve, but that’s not his last name.
Tom: Steve …
Spike: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but you know who I mean.
Tom: Ah, Steve Richards.
Spike: No.
Tom: No?
Spike: Carol? Carell?
Tom: Carol Stevens?
Spike: No, not Cat Stevens.
Tom: I didn’t say Cat Stevens. I said Carroll Stevens.
Spike: Well, I never heard of her.
Tom: Him. Like Carroll O’Connor.
Spike: I’ve heard of Caroll O’Connor, but I never heard of Carroll …
Tom: He was not in Little Miss Sunshine, Spike. You are mistaken. Carroll O’Connor is in very poor health, and I’m sure could not have done that movie.
Spike: Carroll O’Connor’s deceased.
Tom: Wait, hold on. What?
Spike: Carroll O’Connor has been deceased for a number of years now.
Tom: Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Tom continues to express his sympathy and wants the O’Connor family, in this moment of sadness, to realize that The Best Show is there for them. He welcomes any family members to call and share their stories.

I second that.  I remember tears in my eyes laughing on NJ Transit...strange looks from other commuters.

The quote on my posts (below) attests to my love of that call.

I'm stupid and don't know how to capture parts from the show and make them MP3s, so I'll just paste the link:

November 29, 2005: Philly Boy Roy Calls In. Timmy Von Trimble Calls In. Jimmy Crespo From Aerosmith Calls In. The conversation between Tom, 13-year-old Mac, and Jimmy Crespo is one of my favorite moments of the show. Wiggie Malmsteen!

I don't know if it's the best choice if this is going to be the first Best Show moment someone hears, but 2:27:53-2:31:53 from the June 5, 2007 show in which Philly Boy Roy takes over the show, talks about his book signing (with Blob) and then plays a Hooters song was a very strong moment.

I liked the recent episode where Tom opened the show by punching the microphone.  One of my favorite all time moments.  But I'd have to say that the Spike call transcribed above would be about perfect.  It has "Tom as the straight man who is ignorant of basic things" angle down pat, but it's not *too* subtle, which means it should be obvious to all but the densest listeners that it's an act.

Coffin Talk never fails to make me laugh. And the transition from the call that inspired it into the bit itself is pretty brilliant.

Here's a good one that I don't hear mentioned very often - again, it's a bit over the specified time limit (it's about 5:45), but I don't know how set in stone that time restriction is.

Anyway, the clip is from the 7/15/03 show where Philly Boy Roy calls and asks the guest, nutrionist Dr. Udo Erasmus, for help with his diet. It's one of the few times I can recall where a JW caller interacts with a "regular" (ie outside the show's universe) guest. We also get to see Tom walk a real tightrope since he has to set up Roy's jokes while playing it straight enough that the guest doesn't get suspicious (we do hear Tom lose it a little bit when Roy asks about cigarettes, though). Two great performances on this one:

Seconded Thirded.  I think Zeph, top to bottom, is the most hiliarious and brilliant (if underutilized - but maybe that's the point) character ever on the show, and that's saying something.  And (I think) he was totally made up on the spur of the moment, too, AND I think he was just adapted on the fly to be Rose Marshack's uncle.  Genius!

That's the pause that really refreshes.

ZEPH: Guess what else he sprays Pam on.
TOM: What?
ZEPH: ... ... ... Guess.

There's a terribly confusing reference to it here.

http://forum.rollingstone.de/radio-radio-radio/8676-zur-situation-der-radio-musiklandschaft-5.html

Why is it confusing, you ask?

"Yep! Und wenn man Glück hat, singt Tom Scharpling komplett in sich selbst versunken "All by Myself".
Aber ich gebe zu, ich höre das auch zu wenig. Hier in der Gegend kann ich nur Radio Z hören, aber das auch nicht immer."

From June 5th/2007...topic, 'stupidest thing you have ever done'. A former zoo keeper calls in talking about his close call with a mountain lion. Then the Gorch breaks into the studio, a short clip from him that ends with, 'I know what cans are!'. Approx 8minutes. Cut down by at least two minutes.
