Title: mashups
Post by: Andy on July 29, 2008, 09:15:05 PM
ok, I admit I like Girl Talk.  Who else should I be checking out?

the grey album is still the best.

agreed.  I also like it when there is at least some common thread throughout an album.  There are so many comps of mashups out there that are just 2 songs going back and forth that it's tough to even know where to start.

"summer of love 2008" would have been good if it stuck with its concept (1988 acid house/madchester + 1968 psych).

"making plans for vinyl" by go home productions is awesome.  most of go home productions is good, actually.

tom was playing some mashup guy 4 years ago but I can't remember his name.

meatus murder does funny covers which are like mashups.

Andy Votel? Or are you talking about the guy who Tom kept lauding for doing it in real time and not with a computer like those soft-serve guys do? I keep thinking that guy had a dog food-related alias.

DJ Polymorphic-- Song of Songs.  But I'm not sure if that's the live guy or not.

Also, the Internets went wild over the Kleptones.

My favorite single mashup now that I think of it is still an earlier one, Freelance Hellraiser's mix of the Strokes and Christina Aguilera.  I like when you start with shit raw material and make a good song out of it, as opposed to just making a good song out of other good songs.

Soulwax are great.

I will post some of my favorite mashups in another part of this forum later today.

My favorite mashup track is Annie Rush by Go Home Productions - it's Spirit of Radio by Rush and Little Bird by Annie Lennox. The two synthesize so well that there's actually (for me, anyway) an emotional pull to the track that isn't present in either original.

Has anybody ever tried to make their own? I made one with Big Star's Thirteen and Wu Tang's CREAM once and it turned out pretty good. They're pretty fun to make.

Sorry I can't. It was on my old laptop that HP declared dead. I thought I was getting it back for sure and didn't backup a lot of stuff.

Yeah, that's a good one. I like how it spawned offspring. The "Slack Album" (Pavement's Terror/Twilight and The Black Album) was actually pretty good.

I finally checked out Girl Talk, and I like it, definitely gets your butt moving....awesome for parties, I'm sure. The guy is basically the equivalent of the world's best wedding DJ.

However, I found that it kind of tweaked me out after awhile, after I'd heard eight or so songs, and I had to turn it off. For at least a half hour after I put on other music, I kept expecting every song I listened to to turn into a Girl Talk style mashup song, which was very unsettling.

Since I honestly can't remember if I found this video here on the boards I'm hesitant to post this, but I enjoyed it, so here you go:

Station Manager Ken's premium CD from a couple of years ago (called Pop Eating Itself?) had some pretty funny ones.  Ragtime/Eminem and Jimi Hendrix/Christina Aguilera as I remember.

Is there software to take everything but the vocals out of songs? I've always sought out vocal only tracks but it's limited to what you have to work with.
