Dear Tom,
I know you've proclaimed cake's superiority to pie. But what about your Terrific Apple Crumb Pie?*
Do you make an exception for that? Or does it's lack of icing still rank it lower than, say, a piece of chocolate cake?
With warmest regards,
Erika

Jewish Apple Cake is better than any apple pie.
Cake! Wins! AGAIN!

Same for Hindu pineapple upside down cake.

I am a pie partisan, but I gotta give mad props to the cake you are referencing. I've made it for people a few times, but when I make it it's called WASP Apple Cake. Nevertheless, it's pretty damn good.

Wellllll there actually IS a difference when it comes to "Jewish" apple cake in that it's made with large quantities of vegetable oil instead of butter. That's so it can be considered neutral as far as kashrut (kosher laws) are concerned.
Jewish rye, on the other hand, is a load of crapola. (tasty though)

You know, I didn't understand it when I used that recipe, but I did notice it whenever I made it. In that case, I guess it is the genuine apple cake, and the fact that I made it might not automatically mean it's goyische. Jewish rye is kinda tasty too.
