Title: Thank God Tom wasn't there...
Post by: Fido on December 03, 2006, 05:40:33 PM

This afternoon, I went to see a movie, "Three Needles," at the Village East Theater in Manhattan.  While seated in the theater waiting for the movie to start, there were several songs playing in the house while various advertisements and trivia questions were flashed upon the screen -- you know the drill.  The last song was Tom Waits singing "You Can Never Hold Back Spring."  However, just a little ways into the song, the recording began to skip every several seconds, forward, then backward, then forward again... then backward, then ahead... and on and on.  No attempt was made by the theater staff to correct this problem, nor did anyone in the audience react to it even slightly.  The song ended about five times, each time ending and then skipping back about ten seconds and ending again.  The malfunction ceased finally after a good ten minutes when the previews finally started.  (I checked ITunes, the recording of that song that appears there is 2 minutes and 26 seconds long.)

I was in stitches at this point.  I imagine that I was the only person in the theater that found this even slightly funny (in light of the latest episode of the Best Show), but if other FOTs had been there, they'd have either been laughing too, or having aneurysms.  Tom, you can thank your lucky stars that you weren't there.

Fido -

I laughed my ass off reading your post.  I would have loved to have been there, and I would have enjoyed the weird looks I got as the tears streamed down my face.

Once I was in an Indian Restauraunt on Devon Street (where there are 10000000000000000000000000 indian Restaurants here in Chicago) and the music was really weird and trancy and fantastic, wow, it was great. Then after about 20 minutes, I realized that it was the same 15 seconds of a CD of indian pop music through distorted speakers that was skipping, but never in exactly the same place. Wow, it was awesome.

The same thing happened at a McDonalds me and two friends went to. It was the one down in Wall Street, big fancy one, but appearently after 12 it just becomes a portal to an even deeper level of hell than Wall Street McDonalds. We had just gotten back from a Tom Meet-Up, in fact.

First of all, they were only selling four things. Cheeseburger. Fries. Small Soda (NO LARGE). McFish. And each of these was double what it normally was. So me and my friends just hung out there for a while. Then, the lights started flickering. Only a couple, but it made it feel like a sci-fi movie when a space station gets hit by a missle. And then, the pop music started skipping at the most annoying place ever. It was about 5 minutes of "REEEEEEREEEEREEEREEEEEEREEEEREEEEREE". Me and my friends just loved it. The only thing the staff did was one of them yelled "someone fix that", then went back to his magazine. Oh god.

I want to open a McDonalds that's like that all the time.
