Title: Five Thousand MySpace Friends.
Post by: Tom Scharpling on August 08, 2008, 11:55:12 AM
I'm stuck at 3414. Embarrassing. What am I, some fourth rate band from Tampa?

This will not stand. Let's ramp it up.

If you're not a friend yet, request me. I'll add you.

And tell your friends to request me. I'm a good guy!

Thanks.

Tom.

I've posted this comment on multiple friend's sites:

Hi [friend's name],

Add Tom Scharpling as a MySpace friend. His show, "The Best Show on WFMU", is the greatest thing since Beethoven's Third. And I don't mean the movie.

Wow, I haven't been to MySpace in months. It hasn't changed. It still looks like downtown Las Vegas compared to Facebook's Rockport, Maine.

I'm thinking I kinda enjoy Vegas more than Rockport.

My only regret is that I have but one MySpace friendship to give to my hero.

Do we need to start creating fake profiles?

Aww. I'd add you if you accepted band requests, Tom.

You already have my personal profile friendship.

The time has come to break my personal moratorium on social networking sites. What one man can do, another can do!

I don't have my own MySpace profile so I sent a message to Tom from my band's profile page [*ahem* myspace.com/pharmacyspirits) saying I'm a fan and he accepted us. He's even one of our "Top Friends".

Oh heck yeah, Tom!

I sent you a request from my other profile ... Don't watch my acting reel, it's full of toilet language.  Nate edited it.  WhAAAaaat?  It was free.

I'm not very good at keeping track of my Myspace friends- I've tried to add Tom multiple times and it always tells me I already have.

It's ok to be selective.

You don't accept Friend Requests from bands, I see.

To avoid being compared to a fourth-rate band, you'll have to stand on some of our backs.

I now moderate Cambridge club Zuzu's Myspace page (which is registered as a band) and I ran into the same add request denial. Former FMU deejay Jantine B is a frequent current Zuzu deejay, and FOTs like myself and TD from Big Digits work there, so I figured it would be a worthwhile Best Show myspace friend to boost the count. http://www.myspace.com/zuzubar (http://www.myspace.com/zuzubar) if you want to send us an add request, Tom, and I will gladly accept. Boston-area bands The Bags http://www.myspace.com/thebagsofficial (http://www.myspace.com/thebagsofficial) and The Prime Movers http://www.myspace.com/theprimemoversgo (http://www.myspace.com/theprimemoversgo) are also worthy allies (I do managerial and promo work for both, and have gotten some play from FMU allies like Evan "Funk" Davies, Bill Kelly, Terre T, and Joe Belock). Three more prospects toward 5K, at any rate...

Best,

Tim

since you have bestowed activation upon my account plus provided me with laffs during workout time, which makes me look insane to all the other people working out to their toonz, I will friend you on MySpace, it's the least I can do.

Whenever I see the subject line of this thread I finish it in my mind with "...can't be wrong"

Which then, for whatever reason, makes me think of "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back."
