Title: Database
Post by: Josh on August 17, 2008, 10:42:01 PM
I potentially need help setting up a web-based database. Advice, patience, and elbow grease, please. PM me.

MySQL backend, PHP frontend. I'm a dabbler, but that's what I used for a little online inventory db at my work.

What kind of info, and how many records are you looking to have access to?

Django front-end, MySQL back-end.

PHP is a mud language.

I can do data entry, I don't know if that's what you meant though.

I can't do data entry. I transpose numbers and letters. But I'm good at cubes and all that shit.

Stuff like episode date, topics, regular callers, playlist; ya know, the usual. I want the data entry to be web-based. I have an untouched book at home on PHP and MySQL, but I was hoping someone could hold my hand.

Well, unless you REALLY want to learn about programming languages, I would just use an idiot-proof deal like this:

http://creator.zoho.com/explore/online-database-application.html (http://creator.zoho.com/explore/online-database-application.html)

I know that I am not the coding-type, so I end up half-assing a lot of these types of projects because I have no idea what I am doing. It's brainy stuff, so if you are up for it, you could probably benefit in the long run by gaining some new job skills.

you can always start it off in excel and convert to a proper DB later on, as long as you separate by field. Google docs and Open Office have some free spreadsheets as well.

SAS is cool.  My whole life people have told me 'you have a math degree?  You should work for the SAS institute!'  But I don't.  Yet.

Hey Julie,

You don't happen to have a work relationship with an academic institution in your city, do you?

Do you mean do I work for the university? I don't. But a lot of people who work with us do. Do you want a job here?

Well I might know your friend Firesign. I work with some uni people and also I know some university people because I went to school there. Also I live in the neighborhood of the university and I talk to everyone. Does your friend Firesign have a real name?

I DON'T KNOW GLENN! But how i wish i did. I thought we were going to have a real human connection moment.

But who cares. Is Glenn looking for a job? We (the place and people I work with) are looking for more people. It's the best place to work and the best job ever.
