Title: Something to consider about people, according to Last.fm
Post by: dave from knoxville on August 27, 2008, 04:42:32 PM
June Carter Cash has 62 thousand plays.....Reese Witherspoon has 146 thousand.

Maybe all those people listening to the original cast recording of the Legally Blonde musical have their tags all wrong.

is june carter cash considered a different musician than june carter, both of whom are considered different musicians than the carter sisters?

i just ask because that's a big issue i have with last.fm. they'll be like: "i see that you like the frames. might i recommend glen hansard? might i also recommend glen hansard + marketa irglova?" COME ON, LAST.FM.

Last.fm blows.

Why

Last.fm blows.

I like it as a way of tracking what I've listened to, since my iTunes has been wiped out a few times.  As far as using it for a recommendation system, I don't think I've ever gotten anything useful (with the exception of seeing what my friends are listening to and picking up a few things that way).

since my iTunes has been wiped out a few times.

This is why I have 2 separate backups of my music library, one offsite.

I'm like the McGruff the crime dog of proper backups.

(Also, last.fm is very picky about scrobbling, making using it a hassle.)

I've heard a lot of people say that, but honestly I've only had a problem once that I can remember (and I've been using it for almost 3 years now) and updating my software did the trick.  I like it.

The recommendations usually seem to be for things I do like but haven't scrobbled, so I guess that's a vote in favor of their validity.

You have to go through contortions to get an iPhone to scrobble (you have to mount a dummy "iPod"), and you essentially have to "check out" the phone.  That is, if I've played a song on the iPhone that I would like to have registered, I can't play anything at all on the computer until I have synced and scrobbled all the iPhone tracks.  If I do play something on the computer before that, all the phone plays are lost.  Once something is scrobbled for 1pm, for instance, nothing that was played before that on a mobile device will scrobble once you sync the device, even if at no point were both devices being used simultaneously.

I'm not sure if it's like that with a regular iPod, but it is with iPod touches, too.

So, that was my big problem.  Plus some other psychological nonsense I have about obsessively tracking and keeping data accurate to an unhealthy degree.

There was an update I received from last.fm last night. Don't know if it fixed it or not but I had noticed that some things weren't scrobbling. I'll deal with it though because last.fm on the touch and iphone rules especially if you've been using last.fm for awhile.

How dare you.  I actually had things to do for a few hours.

Last.fm blows because it slows down my entire computer, copies everything I listen to and makes it part of my stats which makes me self-conscious about something I should be doing for relaxation and enjoyment, and as far as I can tell, you can't listen to your own "station" unless you pay them money.  It seems absolutely insane to me to pay money for this thing.  I'm also just not that hot on the idea of constantly sharing what you're listening to with everybody at all times, because I feel like it's an occasion to judge and it also makes everything a facilitation of consumption; i.e. so-and-so likes this stuff, i need to now listen to it and buy their album.  Let me try and hear some tracks by them!  Oops, first I have to listen to four other marginally-related bands on their band-related "station" before hearing some totally arbitrary cut that may or may not be indicative of their overall sound.

I just don't put that much importance on it myself.

I think most people see last.fm as a place to show off your music. But, it's a lot more than that. You can listen to stations of everything you have ever listened to (as long as it's in their library) or go to you friends libraries and listen to everything they've ever listened to. That's the sole reason I use last.fm, I never even look at charts or recommendations.

I dunno, man.  You seem too neurotic about music (and sorta angry?) for the site to be of any appeal to you.  It's not them, it's you.  Sorry, double J, I'm a fan.

I think that Grote and I are also both too crazy for last.fm, as we discussed here:

I am pretty crazy, but when it comes to recreational/obsessive web stuff, inertia takes over.  This board and my blog are the only internet things I haven't abandoned after a few months, or in the case of Facebook or Last.fm, I just leave it and stop paying attention to it.
