Title: Why the Dems might win
Post by: Fido on September 01, 2008, 08:09:06 PM
8 years of poor leadership, ongoing efforts to divide the country ideologically, incompetent conduct of foreign policy resulting in the alienation of many if not most of our major allies, use of torture, horrific response to Katrina, and the list goes on.

Add the fact that McCain's positions in the campaign so far don't indicate that he is trying to significantly differentiate himself from the Bush Administration.

Finally, a candidate who is committed to restoring the image of America around the world through a more thoughtful foreign policy, providing affordable health care to most if not all Americans, a commitment to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security rather than attempts to dismantle or privatize them, an energy policy that will do more than just advocate more drilling for oil, and the opportunity to elect the first African-American president in US history.

Just trying to come at this from a positive perspective rather than enumerating why the Dems might manage to wrest defeat from the jaws of victory.

This theory just doesn't have legs.

Well, Junk, at least you're honest. And you can't say I didn't try to frame it positively.

I don't not feel no reason for optimism after the last couple go-rounds.

Does that mean you do not unfeel a reason for pessimism, or do feel unreason toward optimism?

Me too, JJ. Cutout, I sacrificed clarity to make a Best Show joke, failing to reveal that I'm kinda pessimistic. I'm personally pretty impressed with Obama but kinda dismayed that the polls show the race pretty close. I'd rather play up a more optimistic scenario however.

I'm actually with you Fido. I admit to not having 100% confidence in the depth or visionary-ness of Obama's ideas. But he actually does make me hopeful in purely a symbolic sense - the impression he makes overseas is good for diplomacy and for general optimism, for what that's worth. He shares that quality with Bill Clinton.

I've been trying to stick Joe Biden's catchphrase into everyday life to support the ticket.

My girlfriend: "I don't think I'm going to wear the black sweater. I'll probably wear the black cardigan, though."
Me: "Dats not change...dat's MORE UDDA SAME!"

I wish Lawrence Tierney was Joe Biden. I can only picture that phrase coming outta his mouth.

10/07: "I am prepared. I need no on-the-job training. I wasn't a mayor for a short period of time. I wasn't a governor for a short period of time"

Hey-O!

It's no McCain ad depicting Obama as a pedophile or aggressive disenfranchising of the middle class, but it's not bad!

This thread is losing, 17-2, to the thread called "Why the Democrats Might Lose," and what inning are we in?

But this is the negative thread!

Why the Dems might win (even though they'll probably lose)
Why the Dems might lose (even though they'll probably win)

Fair point. I intended it to be the optimistic thread (the Dems might win = the Dems can and should win), but it could be viewed as the opposite (the Dems could actually pull off a win, although they generally lose presidential races that don't involve Bill Clinton, or something like that). A classic glass-half-full or glass-half-empty example, no?

Well, according to this article (http://improbable.com/2008/08/29/barack-obama-will-win-the-2008-us-presidential-election/), the Dems have it locked. Some really clever mathlete created an algorithm that accurately predicted Bush winning in 04 and it's now picking Obama.

Quote
According to the algorithm, being a United States Senator does not contribute to one’s electability for president or vice president, so the Obama/Biden ticket has a total electability of zero. In addition to his 22 years in the Senate, John McCain spent four years in the U.S. House of Representatives, giving him 4 points of presidential electability. However, he divorced his first wife (-110 electability points), so he has a total presidential electability of -106. Sarah Palin has been governor of Alaska for two years, which means she has a vice presidential electability of 2 and the McCain/Palin ticket has a total electability of -104.
