Title: Other talk shows on WFMU
Post by: Joe Rogaine on September 07, 2008, 05:21:49 AM
Anybody catch this new show on WFMU called Night People, its pretty good kind of like Coast To Coast.

Is that the one that spawned from SSD's radio audition topic?

Thanks for the tip, listening now. I have to say, for a station that's introduced me to so much great music, they do chat so well - if occasionally more in the vein of a spirited amateur than a slick pro.

Wow. Swear to god, these guys stole the EXACT format I have been mulling over in my head for a while now. Paranormal Talk + Open Phones + Comedy. Of all the ideas to have stolen out of my brain, this is by far the most eerily specific. True, they aren't in my market, but I'm still gonna have to rethink this.

PS: It's a good show! Real potential with those two. I'm not hatin.

Yes. On their first show as Night People, filling in for someone or other (Bronwyn & Kelly, maybe?), their first call was from Mr. T guy. I LOL'd.

Based on this thread, I listened to two full episodes of Night People.  For being a brand new four hour talk show, I think it's pretty good.

I wouldn't know for sure unless I clicked the link and listened to it, but I beleive this is their "pilot" episode, which was a fill-in for Seven Second Delay:

I also listened to their Bronwyn and Kelly fill-in. Good stuff.

Not a bad idea for a new show at all for the station.  My friend who manages a used bookstore was telling me a few days ago how "paranormal romance" is huge these days.  Probably bigger segments of the population interested in this sort of thing than even underground music.

I remember hearing about something like this on Coast to Coast awhile back. It had something to do with people who thought aliens were coming down and having sex with them in there sleep I cant remember the specific name they gave the phenomena.

I don't think it's as serious as Coast to Coast might talk about.  It's pure romance fiction, like Emma's link.  Though I'm sure alien-human rendezvous factor in somewhere.   :o

I should mention that that article has changed the way I give relationship advice, in that now all I ever tell my friends is that they should be dating vampires. THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN LOVE YOU FOREVER.

I love The Dusty Show. Clay Pigeon's radio persona either has, or maintains the facade of respect for every individual he speaks to. It's a refreshing break. Almost as if Mister Rogers addressed only adults, but without a drip of irony or sarcasm.

To my horror, I called him on the air about 8 or 9 weeks ago, and accidentally opened with "Hey Dusty" although I had been repeating "his name is CLAY" in my head like a mantra. He assumed I was a crank caller, as if I was going to scream something moronic like "you've been DAVED" and hang up, but once I convinced him otherwise, he was nice as could be.

Does Night People have a podcast feed?  I know how to extract an mp3 out of the m3u stream, but I'm more lazy than than I am clever.

Now I know why my Twilight fan girlfriend still goes out with me... I work nights and I'm surrounded by blood (in a clinical research laboratory).  So she must think I'm a vampire.

I used to be obsessed with Coast to Coast, but gave up the "ghost" after art bell retired for the fifth time. Maybe I'll pick it up again if he ever loses interest in his island child bride and starts doing shows again. George Noory just doesn't have that special something.

I listened to some recent shows after reading this, and I think I'm on-board with that show now.

I've also been enjoying Night People.

Yeah, The Dusty Show is pretty good, because Clay has this disarming (and sometimes somewhat alarming) level of earnestness about everything.

I just listened to my first episode and I agree that it's good. I will say that I was confused for the first few minutes until I realized that Clay Pigeon is not the same guy as Clay who used to host The Pounding System and had a pronounced British accent. I just assumed they were the same guy and kept trying to figure out if this was a character or fake accent.

I am totally obsessing about this. Probably a voucher for some theater tickets, copies of Karinne's and my published plays (like, real ones with ISBNs, not the chapbooks I've sent out to some of you guys - not that you don't deserve real copies, but they haven't come out yet), and a CD of weird stuff.  I might also try to make a WFMU shirt that looks like the logo from CATS or has those comedy and tragedy masks, but Karinne might not go for that.

Oops, my bad. I really only heard him in the background when Tom would ask him a question near the end of the show and I just kinda guessed at the accent based on the little I could hear. Sorry for the ugly American-ness.

I have picked up Night People in my podcast rotation. I have a lot of good will for these guys, but so far it's the two guys and their two callers talking about things like the folly of government for 10 minutes, then giggling and playing toy pianos for 50 minutes. I am about 2 months behind. Does it get rolling any better? 7 Second Delay's about all of the "is this the worst show we've ever done?" I can take in one week.

I laugh out loud at 7sd. Maybe I am drawn to the short format (45 minutes of actual content).  The whole show should just be Andy and Ken doing foreplay; forget their "topics."

Not a bad idea for a new show at all for the station.  My friend who manages a used bookstore was telling me a few days ago how "paranormal romance" is huge these days.  Probably bigger segments of the population interested in this sort of thing than even underground music.

I think 7SD has gotten really good since they went to the live variety show format. The real truth, though, like someone else said, is that they're at the best when there's no topic. Andy Breckman is a very funny guy and I just enjoy hearing him talk.

I bailed on Night People too. It gets to be a bit of an endurance test. The guy says the phone number more in ten minutes than all the other talk shows do in about a year.

Night People is the best!! The NY's eve episode is fantastic especially when they get a call from "Sandy"'s brother who is drunk at a party where everyone is falling asleep.  It is classic radio!!!  I am catching every show on the archives now, its like going for a beer with your really funny and intelligent friends and not talking about each others lives, current events etc. but just wondering aloud.

See, I kinda hate those.  Not only are they completely removed from the show's premise (stunt radio, fatal flaw, blah blah blah), Ken and Andy (who I agree is a very funny guy and the reason to listen) get far less time on mic for those shows.  It's lose-lose for me.  But I could just be bitter because I don't care for most of their guests.

After weeks on the air now, I still think Night People is great.  It's definitely not something you have to hear every second of, or even listen every week, but it's so much fun to tune in occasionally, especially if you actually are a night person.

Does anyone else like The Speakeasy with Dorian?  I used to listen to it every Monday (I think that was the day) when I drove home from class at night.  She has a lot of cool guests and the show turned me on to a bunch of cool stuff.  I still listen about once a month.

I'm also working my way through The Acousmatic Theater Hour.  Great stuff, Jason.

I basically agree with you about the guests, especially the musical guests. I enjoy hearing Andy interviewing the folks and struggling with his twin impulses to be his usual rude, wise-cracking self and to be nice to the person who has agreed to help the show (and who is sitting right next to him). I do think he's funny while interviewing the guests, too.

As far as being removed from the show's premise, fair enough. I can't really argue with that point, although I've only been listening for about a year so maybe I'm not as attached to the stunt radio angle as other long-time listeners.

I just heard Clay's Thanksgiving episode of the Dusty Show; it was absolutely sublime. I hope his show runs for years more.

Yeah, I'm really loving The Dusty Show, which I started podcasting on the recommendation of someone here. Whoever that was, I thank you.

Has anyone listened to The Rampler? I wasn't aware of it till SSD's "schedule recap" show. I had to turn it off after 10 minutes. Holy moly was it bad. Maybe the apotheosis of the "It's important because I thought it and thus it needs to be written down/recorded" school of blogging/podcasting.

Maybe I just heard a bad stretch. Has anyone else listened and enjoyed it?

Did anyone listen to SSD last night?  I almost spat out my coffee when the parrot interjected "Never happened" when Andy said, "Someone should teach this bird about the Holocaust."  If TvT ever becomes a supervillain, this parrot should be his mount/sidekick.  They'd be a great team.

Yes! I just listened to it at work today, as I was drinking coffee too, coincidentally. I thought that part was hilarious. Another funny moment was when Andy got the parrot to exclaim "Heil Hitler!"

I wish they would do an entire show with Andy and that parrot conversing. The poor audio quality almost made me skip that episode but I'm glad I stuck with it.

Or "Hail Hitler," as Andy would have it.  American Nazi Party, I guess.

I couldn't believe that! (And came to this thread in hopes that someone else had a similar reaction.) I'm kind of genuinely worried about Nazi bird trainers now.

I'm cracking up listening to this Bon Jovi bit on the New Year's Eve episode of Night People.  First time I've gotten around to them and this episode at least is great.

I have listened to that episode too many times to comfortably state on this message board.

"My favorite drink is cocoa. Thanks for asking."

I think what got me hooked was when he goes, "You know what's Latin that I never realized? Chips Ahoy." I about died.
