Title: I thought to myself, upon being GOMP'ed...
Post by: Pete Velcro on September 08, 2008, 04:57:44 PM
"We must have gotten disconnected. I'll call back right now so Tom can hear the rest of my thing!"
And then I heard the playback, and it dawned on me: "So this is what dial tone tastes like." It was the second of only two times I've called in.

I bring this up because it's crazy that my first thought was that there must have been a bad phone connection--I was on a land line!

What went/goes through your mind when you get/got GOMP'ed?

there's been a few times where I've been GOMP'd unexpectedly and I feel stupid that I've continued to talk to no one for like 30 seconds before I realize

Why did he get so mad when I told him that I didn't know who Ted Knight was?

After listening to the archives for the first time, I totally understood the GOMP.
Title: Soft GOMP/Hard GOMP

Unless you've said something heinously offensive, a GOMP is all in good fun. A few times I've been ushered off the air before I said something stupid, which may be worse. But I'm a new caller. This may someday blossom into a hard GOMP.

But yeah, that sudden absence of sound is quite a vacuum to be pitched into.

Not exactly a GOMP, but I accidentally hung up my phone while I was on hold before, then called back and said "I think we got disconnected" and Mike laughed in my face.

I imagine the feeling might be similar.

I think Julie's got all us beat with her story about Tom getting on the line off the air and yelling at her.

When I get GOMPed, one thought prevails:

"I deserve this."

Wow. I never knew that. Julie was a wild child when whe first showed up.

I don't think of GOMPS of deserved or undeserved. I think of callers as screen actors and Tom as the director. So not all of your performance makes it to the final cut.

I always expect to get GOMP'ed and one time I called and didn't get GOMP'ed, but thought I did, so I hung up on Tom. But I think the Heave-Ho thing is a bad move and that the GOMP should come back. Or something just as funny as the GOMP that doesn't make me think of little men with beards who whistle and like to work.
