-
Trembling Eagle, what are we going to do with you?
-
For your pennance I want you to listen to ten Lil' Wayne mixtape tracks.
-
You should check out revolver.torrent.
-
I think if I tried to listen to all of these songs in the order they're listed, I'd probably have to be hospitalized.
-
^^what he said. yeesh. system of a down did a cover of "shame on a nigga"? are you serious?
-
Boo to Lil Wayne but Korn & Disturbed get a pass?
I'm becoming more and more convinced that "Trembling Eagle" is just some character somebody is workshopping via the boards. This is just too much mutanity in a row for me to believe otherwise.
-
So are you looking for advice from rock music enthusiasts?
Maybe not, but I'll put in my two cents anyway ... using your (very) miscellaneous playlist as a jumping-off point.
American Woman.mp3 ...
The Flaming Lips - Going To Florida.mp3
Which version of "American Woman"? The original, by the Guess Who, is a staple of classic-rock radio. Lenny Kravitz covered it, but FUCK LENNY KRAVITZ. The Butthole Surfers have a demented cover verion of "American Woman" (it's really more of a massacre than a cover version). Your Flaming Lips selection is a Butthole Surfers cover. I am pro-Butthole Surfers. They meant a lot to me during a (mal)formative time in my life. The "Locust Abortion Technician" and "Hairway to Steven" albums are a good starting point with that band. I also like that Blood Brothers song you have on your playlist. They're another good "extreme" band if yr. in the right frame of mind for that type of thing.
David Bowie - Young American.mp3
The Flaming Lips - Going To Florida.mp3
Bowie was consistently great thru the '70s, although the "Young Americans" album isn't as good as most of the other '70s stuff. "Scary Monsters", from 1980, is a great album. Bowie's late 70s albums are also good if you're interested in exploring his collabs with Brian Eno and Robert Fripp.
Bowie's "Live Santa Monica '72" was "officially" released recently... as Raad_Man might say, it's full of kick-ass rock and roll that's totally not gay. Oh wait a minute ...
(http://www.theage.com.au/ffxImage/urlpicture_id_1077676906092_2004/02/26/sticky,0.jpg) ... never mind.
Led Zeppelin ...
Everything! Listen to all of it!
Bad Brains ...
Yep. They're good. Fugazi, Shudder to Think, those are some other good ones from that Washington DC scene. There's a thread here (http://www.friendsoftom.com/forum/index.php/topic,4054.0.html)about that scene, with contributions from people who know a lot more about it than me ...
eddie money - take me home tonight.mp3
Oh man, that guy is such a putz. But I do kind of like "Two Tickets to Paradise" as a guilty-pleasure type thing. I'd put Billy Squire in that category also.

Tom got me into the Thermals, they're a great band. He also gave me an appreciation for Aerosmith at the height of their mid-70s sleaziness.
I'll stop there ... hope I'm not being too pedantic. Keep flying your mixed-martial freak flag, TE. Don't let the haters get you down.
-
That list makes me so MAD. Oh man, it makes me want to fight TE.
-

There's only one place to settle this...
THE OCTAGON!
cue American Woman.mp3
Well Tremblin' Eagle, I'll give you credit for being consistent, your taste in rap, sports and rock are equally terrible.
-
I'm actually pretty curious to hear this one:
destiny's child vs. nirvana - smells like booty.mp3

I think that was a big mash-up hit by Soulwax from like 2001.

where is the rock that you have been listening to?
-
So are you looking for advice from rock music enthusiasts?
Maybe not, but I'll put in my two cents anyway ... using your (very) miscellaneous playlist as a jumping-off point.
Yeah, I'm just throwing it out there...I'm not a
"Rock" fan at all. I don't have the background or the references to understand what's good or not I just hear stuff I like and I'm like, "let me check it out." Now that I think about it the Under Pressure song I got from the Best Show too, think about that stuff that you've probably been listening to your whole life I'm JUST now hearing for the first time.
The American Woman song must be by the Guess Who, there was no name on it when I downloaded it I think I found it looking for the Kravitz version the Guess Who version I cam across had a fun little faux blues riff in the front of it that I liked a lot so I decided to keep it.
I think I would really like David Bowie if I could get into his stuff more I just don't know where to start. I kinda remember him doing this 90's thing with Trent Reznor with the "I'm Afraid of American's" single I liked that just never got around to listening to the album or exploring his work more.
The Eddie Money thing is from my youth, I grew up in the 80's so music from that area of any genre just kinda stick in the back of my head even if I don't know it. I had no idea who Eddie Money is or that song really untill I found myself humming the bridge one day and couldn't get it out of my head...went running to the internet and came across the tune. You guys may think it's corny but Take Me Home Tonight is a perfectly crafted pop/rock song, it just fucking works! Whoever the lady is singing with him the, horns, the break down....it's just a rocking ass song, to me anyway.
That Blood Brother's song is insanely rocking the second I heard t on the show I was like "I must have this", it's like I can't play that at regular volume, gotta be super loud. It's weird because I downloaded the album that came off of thinking I would be into the whole thing and that song was the only one that really moved me. I have like 10-15 rock albums and one of the ones I actually went out and physically bought with my own money back in the day was "Atari Teenage Riot - 60 Sec Wipeout" so I think I have a soft spot for really noisy frenetic stuff, I don't know, I didn't like any of the rest of the DHR stuff I came across.
Led Zep, man that stuff is kinda awesome lol, I know how that must sound. Awesome groove, can you guys suggest more songs/groups that are that groovy/bluesy feel? A song I came across a year or so ago I really like is "Smith - Baby It's You". That intersection of soul-blues and rock really fascinates me. Is there more of it?

Queens of the Stone Age
Eagles of Death Metal
The Eddie Money thing ...Whoever the lady is singing with him ...
Ronnie Spector (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Spector#Ronettes_and_solo_album_discography)

I hate to say it, but "Y'all Want a Single" by Korn is actually pretty neat-o ... Sorry, but I gotz to be honest!
Love, Eli Braden

"big, dumb, fun"
that's what I think about that song, demands to be played loud.
Can any of you musically inclined tell me what exactly Korn is doing...technically for their sound? It's like I know I'm hearing something different but I can't place it.
-
I, for one, would like to see you fight Bob Balaban, TE.
I also like that Eddie Money song. The Ronnie Spector vocals are totally affecting.
-
I think daveB from Oakland is actually Julie from Cincinnati who is actually TL.
Your thoughts?

I couldn't possibly be from Cincinnati. I'm from Oakland!

Wow. Morrissey was a lot more attractive in 1969.
[Joke. Explanation can be provided if necessary ... ]
But yeah, if you like soul music with a hard-charging rhythm section, check out the people who recorded for Stax records in the 1960s. Otis Redding. The Bar-Kays. Booker T. & the MGs. Rufus & Carla Thomas. Sam & Dave. All that stuff. It was a good time for southern soul. And ampersands.

I been slowly collecting the Stax stuff in my blues-R&B folder
I found out about that stuff tracking down Wu-Tang samples, RZA used a ton of those artists.
But what I'm kind of interested in is (if it's out there) is the more rocking half of that the Electric Prunes type stuff.
-
You know who can help your taste along...
WFMU's musical programming. They have "rock"-friendly programs, and they're leaps and bounds better than this stuff. ;)
-

Unless I have a really split personality, which I'm not ruling out because how would I know that, and I'm doing things I don't know I'm doing, then you are wrong. But if it makes people like me better, then believe it.
-
Isn't this post kind of the same as some other post about listening?

southern soul is insanely powerful and much better than the northern soul movement that i try every year to get into, but fail miserably. maybe one day.

you're going to throw the electric prunes onto that playlist?! trembling eagle, you're breaking down barriers.

Korn uses drop-d tuning in most (all?) of their songs. That's what gives it that sludgy bass sound.

Electric Prunes are on my "Misc - soul/r&b" playlist along with Tom Scott's "Today" and the Beatles cover of "Baby it's You" are I guess Rock but I feel fit more smoothly with more groovy stuff.

I think they all use 7 string guitars so it's actually some other weird low tuning. Drop D isn't low enough for those dudes.
Also, I think they record the bass while the bass player is falling down a flight of stairs.

Led Zep, man that stuff is kinda awesome lol, I know how that must sound. Awesome groove, can you guys suggest more songs/groups that are that groovy/bluesy?
Page/Plant
Coverdale/Page

No shit! It was the golden age of ampersands! I keep waiting for a resurgence, but maybe I'm just stuck in the past. Anyway, it would be cool to see an ampersand revival someday.
Sigh.

ha!
ATR had a big impact on me when i was in high school. middle school even. that's def not their best album tho.
as for the other DHR stuff, Shizuo and Christoph De Babalon were godlike. i'll never get tired of their DHR stuff. Bomb 20's DHR album was great but everything else he did sucked. Lolita Storm and Fidel Villeneuve each put out one extremely underrated album out on the label and then left, and the label hasn't released anything worthwhile since. Patric Catani did a lot of incredible groundbreaking stuff. Alec Empire changed my life for good, but he fell off hard after "miss black america".
WHEN YOU'VE REACHED YOUR PEAK IT'S TIME TO DIE!!!
