Title: Holden Caulfield's Mix Tape, Vol. 1
Post by: Susannah on September 24, 2008, 12:10:12 PM
I got sick of teaching my freshmen about pronouns and antecedents this morning, and sick of discussing the symbolism of the red hunting hat in "Catcher in the Rye," so I asked my girls to brainstorm a list of songs they'd like to put on a mix tape (or, more likely, iTunes playlist) for Holden.  This is an extremely cheesy assignment, but it was a fun, interesting window into the mind of the fourteen-year-old girl. Each girl picked one or two songs and shared her reasoning with the class; I thought I'd share it with you.

This is not in order or grouped together at all, but it doesn't matter:

1. The New Pornographers--Challengers
2. Creep--Radiohead
3. Losing My Religion--REM
4. Alcohol--Millionaires
5. Whatever You Like--TI
6. Bittersweet Symphony--the Verve
7. Almost--Bowling for Soup
8. Keep Holding On--Avril Lavigne
9. Capricorn (A Brand New Name)--30 Seconds to Mars
10. The Small Print--Muse
11. Heaven's A Lie--Lacuna Coil (!)
12. Complete Control--the Clash
13. You Can't Hurry Love--the Supremes
14. Stronger--Kanye West
15. Lose Yourself--Eminem
16. Californication--Red Hot Chili Peppers
17. Lips of An Angel--Hinder
18. Breathe Me--Sia
19. Eye of the Tiger--Survivor ("Holden just needs some motivation..." was the justification for that one)
20. Lolita--Stereophonics
21. Don't You Forget About Me--Simple Minds

They definitely chose suitably angsty songs, and then some other interesting ones.  Happy Wednesday.

I always pictured Holden as a "Barbershop Lover" kinda guy.

Good to see that R.E.M. is still doing it for the kids.

17. Lips of An Angel--Hinder

I've heard of these guys. Pretty cool, huh? Time to get a back tattoo.
It could be the Hinder-burg.

(Ouch.)

Too much suspense: what's the symbolism of the red hat?

I've always wanted to pitch a screenplay where Holden Caufield teams up with Esther Greenwood from The Bell Jar.  They go on a crazy cross-country road trip and learn the meaning of life, love and happiness.  I think Salinger might go for it.
