Post by: Beth on September 27, 2008, 10:08:50 AM
Thank you for making good movies, being such a generous man, and for the delicious, delicious snacks. You'll be missed.

I'm sad, and not just because he's the guy responsible for dark chocolate peanut butter cups and Ginger-O's!  :'(

Yeah, this news gave me a pang.  And I feel very sorry for Joanne Woodward and the daughters.

Damn.

I guess that means Empire Falls was his last role, aside from voiceover stuff.
He was so good in that, and everything else he did.

Rest in peace, sir.

We just watched Cool Hand Luke a few weekends back, remembering how great he was. Is. Was?

Sad.

Does this mean there won't be a Cars 2?

A perfect example of someone using their celebrity for good.

Time to go pop in Butch & Sundance.

Totally unexpected, he was so young.
Why do the sweetest flowers wither and fall from the stem?

Totally unexpected, he was so young.

Ok, maybe not THAT unexpected... but still, I didn't know he was even sick! He's one of those people I think of as endlessly vital. Thought of as.

Some of the pictures of him over the last few months were pretty scary, he was looking very frail.

The last time I can recall seeing him in a public appearance was on Letterman, maybe three years ago. He seemed fairly spacy, not entirely engaged with his surroundings. But he seemed happy, and he seemed like someone who'd fully enjoyed his time on earth. So, good for him ... what more can you ask for?

Perhaps my favorite actor of all-time. So many great roles, from The Hustler all the way through to Nobody's Fool. And he seemed like a good person, too.

$250 million dollars to assorted earthling charities. Somebody point that out to that asshole Tom Cruise, and his outer-space saviors.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is afk's favorite movie ever; I think it's the first celebrity death that meant anything to him.

God bless you, Paul Newman.

Not many people can hold a candle to his talent, charm, and standards. He did everything he was put on this planet to do, and was a class act all the way through. Thanks, Paul.

Filmed in Johnstown, PA! My wife's dad has a great picture from the local newspaper at the time of all the cast of Slap Shot sitting around on their lunch break in the middle of town, just sitting in the park eating sandwiches and easily approached by passerby. I can't imagine an actor of Newman's stature doing that today.
Anyway, I love that in the parade scene, you can clearly see Johnstown's historic "porno district" in the background (playing Deep Throat). Niiiice.

Anyways, One of my favorite actors ever. I watched The Verdict last night in tribute.

A kind testimonial from fellow gentleman, Robert Redford.

There will probably be some clause in Newman's Will that bequeaths that lump of metal to Redford somehow. When Redford has to lug it home from the cemetery, the contest will have an official winner.
