This was mentioned on the Night People show the other night. Does anybody know where this is in the archives?
-
July 20, 2004: Tom Does A One Man Version Of The Entire Movie Road House! Also, An Unfair Record Review Of The New Wilco Album.
A really great show, that one.
-
Tom should do another one of these ... preferably with Pink Cadillac starring Eastwood and Burnadette Peters.

Cool thanks Jouster.
-
this was one of the best things anyone has ever done.

I vote for Rhinestone.
-
I remember someone (Jixby?) saying they uploaded this somewhere, with the video and audio already synched up.
Does anyone know about that or know if Tom would mind if someone did do that?
It was unbeilievably funny and would be a good way to introduce friends to Tom's genius.
-
Jixby did say that, but I don't know anything about if or where he's uploaded it. I've got an .avi of this that I've done, too. The synchronization is pretty good, but the perfectionist in me would like to improve it. But I'd be happy to upload it somewhere, if there's some interest (and if someone can recommend an appropriate tracker to use?)
-
Not "Every Which Way But Loose", but "Every Which Way You Can"
-
Cannonball Run!!!! He should sing all of the parts.

Me too (and three and four and five)!

Jeepers Creepers, I listened to this all whilst washing the dishes - I've seen the film enough times to not have to do the two at the same time - I could barely control my laughter. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up.

Yes, please! It was truly a HOF moment.

Woah baby
I DID make a DVD of this, but I never uploaded it anywhere. But yeah I kinda do wanna redo it because I figured out that when I edited it as an MP3 I lost some running time and had to correct in a really tedious way (I actually added in little half-second silences every 5 minutes, I didn't know how else to do it). All I used was the original movie audio track to go by with the syncing; I didn't use the video. So the action noises and stuff are distractingly off. I have better editing software, I could probably do it some justice. But I won't even attempt to start this until I get a job (NO FUN ALLOWED UNTIL I'M EMPLOYED).
-
Jixby, I've blamed having a job for my inability to spend the time improving my effort.
I'll take a crack at it this weekend - I've got the job all rendered and ready to go in Final Cut Pro. Might as well get it right before distributing it too widely. It may be a few more days after this weekend while my computer churns away at it.
It'll be a race, Jixby - who can do it first?
-
I actually thought about Tom's Roadhouse a few shows back, when he was comparing Yankee Stadium to the Mos Eisley Catina scene in Star Wars. His recitation of the "He doesn't like you...I don't like you either" line was spot on. Spot. On. Being a huge Star Wars nerd and an FOT, I immediately began wishing for a Tom dub of Star Wars.
-
I bet Tom could do a whole year of shows like this ... and guess what! I'd tune* in to every one!
*Does streaming it online count as "tuning in?"
-
I did the sync up yet again last weekend at around 2 am after drinking all night. Still effing hilarious. I think the music choices add a whole other level. I did this with a non-FOT friend of mine who was pretty drunk, and it took her like ten minutes before she realized it wasn't the real soundtrack (she had never seen Roadhouse before). I kinda envy her that experience.
-
I've got the version Bryan made and it's great!

OK, so I'm not going to obsessively fuss with the synchronization - it mostly works, and I don't have time to tinker further. I'm doing some video encoding as I type, to get it down to a manageable size, and will post more info in the appropriate spot on the boards later.
edit: Coming next week - probably Wednesday-ish.
-
I look forward to this. I've seen the movie only once, long before I'd even heard of the show, and though I loved the Roadhouse episode on its own, it will be a treat finally to listen to it while watching that terrible, terrible movie (which I watched, by the way, with a group of people who absolutely and unironically adored it).
-
I was going to say that YouTube bumped up their size limit substantially, but then I realized that something like this would probably be pulled.
-
I've never seen Roadhouse or heard this show. Which is the better way to experience it: having already seen Roadhouse, or fresh?

I watched it (not well- it was on cable one night so I did the best I could but the synchronization was terrible) without having seen the movie before and I didn't feel I was really missing anything.
-
There was another show that tried this a couple months ago but the opted for Back To The Future.
-
What does Tom say during the "I fucked guys like you in prison!" line?
-
If memory serves:
"I've talked to guys like you in prison"
-
Roadhouse is an amazing movie and should definitely been seen and appreciated on it's own merits before watching the probably also amazing Scharpling version.
-Ajax
-
so...is this ever going to get posted? sounds amazing.
-
Why, hello.
-
gazzara GOMP destroyed me.
-
I have ONLY seen Roadhouse the way Tom does it. In fact this is how I was introduced to TBS. I almost refuse to watch Road House in it's original form I like the way Tom does it so much.

This makes it sound like people are just forcing Roadhouse on you all the time. You need to get a new crowd.
-
i'm incredibly excited about mr brooks, scharplingized.

Me too, can't wait!
Watched Roadhouse again last night, what a tour de force. The music cracks me up too - "I can't listen to that crap, it's got no heart! It's Wilco!"
-
So, should I watch Mr. Brooks 1.0 before Tom improves it?
-
I say yes. I've already seen it.
-
I'm doing something (illegal) about it as I type.
-
You and me both, Sarah. I won't tell if you don't tell.
-
By "illegal" I assume you mean purchasing the DVD. Because that should be illegal.
-
Yeah, that's it! *Sarah Palinesque ;)*
-
Yeah, that's it! you betchya! *Sarah Palinesque ;)*
fixed!

No I just happen to always find Road House playing on TV. It's kind of weird...
-
I can't WAIT for Tom's version of Mr. Brooks!
Like Roadhouse, my first (and only) viewing of this movie will be Scharplingized!

I have not seen Mr. Brooks, and I think I'll experience it for the first time as it is Scharplingized.
-
I'm going to follow Martin's advice and watch it unimproved first. I think this will make me appreciate Tom's performance all the more.
-
i walked in on my family watching it, right at the end; i regret this every time someone brings it up. there really is no point in me watching it now.
-
I'm about to order my copy of Mr. Brooks. So excited! My only dilemma is choosing whether i want to actually get the blu-ray for 5 dollars more than the DVD, and do i WANT to see that much detail in dane cook's ugly mug?

(not really a spoiler)
Only in Blu-Ray can you REALLY appreciate how the window was closed so much that it must have been open.

Also, not sure who we have to beg, but since this Mr. Brooks production will be podcasted, I really think the Roadhouse one should FINALLY be archived as a podcast before something tragic like the servers crashing again happens and we lose it forever. That happened the first time I wanted to show it to my friends back home and THAT NIGHT I guess the archive servers got fried and everything was down for a while, most notably, the Roadhouse show. I think it was one of the longest shows to get back up so I really don't want that to happen again!
Just my $0.02
-
it's still up on the wfmu archives (http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/BS)
scroll down to july 20, 2004, and listen at leisure.

I know it's still up, just it would be nice to have a podcast of it so we can forever have it on our hard drives in case something happens to the servers again.

You're welcome.

MySpleen appears to have decided to accept uTorrent seeds again, so come and get Roadhouse, Scharplingized while you can, folks.
-
I'm going to follow Martin's advice and watch it unimproved first. I think this will make me appreciate Tom's performance all the more.
Now that you've seen it, I'll be over on Tuesday to watch the Scharplingized version. I'll bring the box of wine.

It's not this tuesday, is it?
-
I think it's the 25th.
-
I think it's the 25th.
In that case ... Two boxes of wine 8)
-
I don't remember him saying a specific date. I think Tom said the John Hodgman interview is the 25th but I imagine that will take up a good portion of the show?
-
Yeah, I don't believe he got a specific date, just promised for sometime this year.
