Title: holy crap, my other toenail removal story...
Post by: Andy on October 15, 2008, 05:13:28 AM
I got my other big toenail removed and forgot to bring my pain meds home.  It hurts so bad that I can't sleep.

pictures to follow.

I was just browsing through the FOT picture thread yesterday and admired again the picture of your toe.  After this morning's ordeal, I bet you'll be cutting your toenails straight in the future.

my case is more heredity.  I have wide flat feet that make my toes get squeezed and my stupid toenails are extra curvy. now i've had all 4 sides of my big toenails removed surgically.

I'm boring myself with this.

I'll probably be going through something similar with one of my big toenails soon. Your photos do not make me look forward to the procedure.

it's not bad at all.  I wish I had done it a long time ago.  I went ahead and got my other one fixed quickly after having the bad one done first because I forgot how good it feels not to have them be ingrown.  Now I feel like a schmick for living with the pain for so long.

The second day is the worst, but it's not bad with the medicine.  I refuse to stay home from work, which makes it worse.  Also, I'm constantly not taking my meds to see how bad the pain will get, like a dummy.

Oh, Andy! Now you are my favorite FOT! My feet are like duck flippers and I can only wear special shoes, which are very ugly and expensive. I don't have to have my toenails removed, though. Am I still your favorite?

I can only wear special shoes. . . . I don't have to have my toenails removed.

Cause and effect.  I, too, have never had huge problems with ingrown toenails because I've always insisted on wearing shoes wide enough to accommodate my boardlike feet.  If you hadn't insisted on cramming your feet into those narrow little Italian numbers (steel toed, of course) that your vanity compels you to wear, Andy, your toes would have been spared much agony.

I had that toenail surgery. Best surgery ever. Before I had it I'd sometimes accidentally bump my foot into something and it would hurt like crazy.

Sarah, now you are my favorite FOT! How do you deal with it when all of your friends go shoe shopping? Are you mature enough to accept that if you go, you won't find anything you like? Surprise, but I'm not mature enough. I get bummed out and so I never go along.

Andy and/or yesno, are the toenails removed permanently?  Or do they grow back the right way?

Julie, I have never had the kinds of friends who went shoe shopping for fun.  I have, however, on occasion looked for cheap shoes at discount joints with my mother and/or sisters, where I generally just make fun of the ridiculous offerings and occasionally jam my enormous feet into something foolish to get a laugh.

If I were rich, I would have all my shoes custom-made.

It was like 15 years ago but my recollection is that they narrow your toenails and make it so that they don't grow so wide anymore.  They don't actually remove your whole toenail.  My big toenails now have this weird narrow look.

Also, it's just done in a doctor's office.

on my right foot they took off the whole nail and it's just now starting to poke it's little head out and grow back.  on the left one (because it's only one side) they just cut the nail out back to the nail bed on the ingrown side and it will grow back eventually.  the left one was so ingrown that they didn't even have to actually cut it, as it had cracked all the way back.

I definitely learned long ago not to cheap out on shoes.  my wide/flat feet make it extra tough on the shoes.  I used to buy timberland/born/whatever, and I would trash them in literally 3 months.  now I'm almost exclusively Ecco, which cost more but last considerably longer (like years instead of months)

Sarah and Andy, you should both let the H-Man take you shoe shopping.

I hate shopping.  My ideal is to have someone come here, measure my feet, trot off to his or her cobbler's bench, and return in however long it takes with perfectly comfortable footwear.

I have gotten the same pair of Ecco's for christmas from my parents for the last 3 years.  I'm kind of in the same boat as Sarah, but not as extreme yet.
