Post by: Andy on October 15, 2008, 11:27:33 PM
ok, time to start cramming al the music i've been neglecting.  what are some strong contenders?

I think my front runner so far is The Grouch- Show You the World. or The Cool Kids- Bakesale EP.

I can't remember when the top two albums for me were both hip hop, but i'm sure i'm forgeting some.

oooooooh, we should do a soundopinions style top albums list. starting dec 15th or so everyone list their top ten in order and we assign them weighted values and come up with an overal FOT top 25 (or so) albums for the year.

it would also be awesome to have some anonymity to get more truthful top 10s, but I think anything we did that allowed that (PM or email) may kind of discourage participation .

You could let people vote for a list of candidates (music, not politicians), or hold the contest on f*t*h*n. (Is that allowed?)

i'd rather not limit the potential pool of albums, and taking it down to chinatown would exclude some people.  i'&l bet we can make it work in a thread.  now, I just need some dfk knowledge on a fair weighting system.

Wouldn't the easiest way be to make your #1 choice worth 10 points, #2 = 9, etc?  Or there's the Pazz & Jop method where you just distribute 100 pts. amongst the 10 in any way you see fit.
Title: Re: album of the year discussion

yeah, either way would work.  I like to make things 10 times more difficult to gain 1% more fairness or accuracy.

In other words: I'm dumb.

#1 worth 20
...
#10 worth 2
Up to 5 honorable mentions worth 1.

One wild card spot assigned a value at random from 1-20.
One of your top ten albums will actually detract from the album's overall score. That album will be voted on by your peers and sent to the list's arbitrator via PM.
Two albums will be selected at random from the Pitchfork year-end list and given 100 points.
Two albums will be selected at random from the Pitchfork year-end list and barred from competition.
Should Billy Joel release an album between now and year's end, that album automatically wins.

Cheap shot. I apologize.

Probably based on my fear of rating systems. I'm a numera-dummy.

Listening to the new Deerhoof right now. Liking it a lot. Nice to hear them with two guitars again.

A few off the top of my head:

Times New Viking - Rip It Off
The Music Tapes - Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes
Abe Vigoda - Skeleton
Eat Skull - Sick to Death
No Age - Eraser 7"
The Barbaras - Summertime Road 7"

2007 was such a great year for music that I think 2008 has been kind of a year for collective breath-catching.

Oh, yeah I liked that album too. I heard them for the first time this year. A friend of mine said that with all my interest in 60's pop I should check them out. Thumbs up. They manage to do a vintagish Phil Spector/Warhol/Jesus and Mary Chain-inspired thing without seeming overly vapid and silly. Really fun, good times music!

Here's some I enjoyed in alphabetical order:
Stereolab, Chemical Chords

I've lost track of Stereolab... although I love them very much. Haven't heard anything since Margerine Eclipse. Thanks for reminding me that I need to play some Stereolab catch-up. They make for great wintertime music, as well.

Also, I love how this thread is so diverse. Falls all over the music spectrum. I like how un-boring we are!

I think Chemical Chords is the only thing they've put out since Margerine.  It's a good album, I can't imagine a Stereolab fan not liking it (although you pretty much know what you're going to get with their albums at this point).

I was certain there was one in between Margerine and now. I checked, and there's one called Fab Four Suture (thanks, allmusic!) that I guess we'll both be checking out, Jbissell!

But yeah, Stereolab is pretty predictable. And that's not a bad thing.

Haha, funny you mention Fab Four Suture. After that post I found it in my big folder of albums I downloaded but haven't listened to yet.  It's weird, there are times when I have a problem with a band being predictable and beating their sound into the ground, but I've never had that problem with Stereolab.

I recently got to see Thee Ohsees and Intelligence do a combined set- taking turns doing songs and collaborating on some. Ohsees did Block of Ice and Intelligence did their version right after. It was a dream come true. Too bad it was in Fargo, North Dakota on a Sunday and there were only seven people out to see them.

I've listened to less new music this year than ever, but two standouts have been Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down's We Brave Bee Stings and All and Tim Fite's Fair Ain't Fair.

also, Mogwai's new one and that last Walkmen. And that Langhorne Slim album.

Just a quick point about Fab Four Suture by Stereolab; it's not really an album as such and more a complilation of 10"s they did. Umm, I think the new record is the best thing they have put out since Dots and Loops way back 1997 or 1998 I think. Just a great band really, can't wait to catch them in December.

My top 10 is almost done. I fear absolute ridicule from the FoTs as I'm still a relative newcomer on the boards (and my listening tastes vary quite a bit from I'd say about 90% of everybody here...). But I have been thinking this topic over for a while now. To be posted soon!

Just looking at the lists so far, there is a fair amount of variation. So far of the 40 or so albums that have been listed so far, at least 10 are from artists I don't care for. I imagine most people feel the same way...I also imagine my list will be the only one that includes the Nada Surf album that came out this year. I doubt much ridicule will be put to type for anyones list, though very possibly it will be thought by readers.

Overall, though, I don't think 08 was a very good year for music or movies. I look at all the lists and they seem kind of poor.

I agree, albeit as a matter of opinion rather than judgment. This year's "big releases" didn't really pique my interest. My top ten list is non-existent – I’ll say Autechre’s Quaristice was my “favorite” album of the year, even though no one seems to agree about that.

Girl Talk - Feed the Animals (forgot this one)

Also like the latest Stereolab and Mogwai albums, but I wouldn't rank them up there.

I've been really liking that tune "Sister Morphine" from the Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers that I got from the library. I know it's not a whole album, and was released over 35 years ago, but I'd still like to submit it. I really haven't listened to much else this year.

Grampall Jookabox, Ropechain

Bizarre hybrid of stompin' blues and folk and hip-hop.  Album that bewildered at first and gradually became a favorite.

Autechre - Quaristice

Big Dipper - Supercluster (this should count)

Wire - Object 47

Spiritualized - Songs in A&E

Eat Skull - Sick to Death

Jay Reatard - Singles 06-07

That's all I can think of that actually came out in 2008.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Facing Future

The Threshold HouseBoys Choir - Forms Grows Rampant

Black Tambourine - Complete Recordings

And that's ten, so I'll stop.

I've have never heard a worse analysis of this year in music than the one provided by All Songs Considered.

A summary of the show:
You know what band is great, Bon Iver?
Boy, I sure do love the Fleet Foxes.
We should probably also mentioned My Morning Jacket to cover all our bearded guy bases.
That Coldplay record was just ok, but we should probably talk about it for a while anyways.
Mentioning Santogold & TV on the Radio covers our minority demographic right?

Those guys have pretty abysmal taste in rock (especially DeRogatis), overshadowed only by their abysmal taste in hip-hop. And, for a show that continually prides itself on being the "World's Only Rock & Roll Talk Show," they sure spend a lot of time talking about folks like Britney Spears, Kanye West and Beyonce.

I'm interested to hear the negative talk about Cave. I've never liked him but I know lots of folks who drool over everything he does and, as Andy said, these two certainly seem to follow suit. I always just figured it was because they're lyric guys and I'm not.

My tastes tend to line up with a fair amount of what those two recommend; given that they're just trying to be the Siskel and Ebert of rock criticism (not the highest of ambitions) I'd say they do a fine job of it. In any case I'll almost always forgive some backwards judgment calls as long as the critic brings some passion to the discussion and doesn't try to hide his or her biases, and I think DeRo and Kot fit that bill better than 90% of the rock writers out there.

2008 was no 2007.  The beck album was good (which equates to "meh." for me in terms of beck albums), but will probably make my top 10 because this year was weak.

I'm changing my answer because I actually thought about it for a little while instead of just searching my iTunes and copying and pasting the names of ten albums that came out in '08.  Chris L, I respectfully slap you with my silken glove over the Dirtbombs' record -- "Leopardman at C&A" and "Le Fin Du Monde" are fine tunes.  Though I could have lived without that 10-minute noise noodle on side two.

1) The Dirtbombs - We Have You Surrounded
2) The Black Keys - Attack & Release
3) v/a - Love, Peace, & Poetry: Chilean Psychedelic Music (reissue comp)
4) The Black Hollies - Casting Shadows
5) Big Dipper - Supercluster: The Big Dipper Anthology (reissue)
6) Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Rapid Response EP
7) Santogold - s/t
8 ) v/a - Disco Not Disco: 1974-1986 (reissue comp)
9) Hank IV - Refuge in Genre
10) Cheap Time - s/t
11) v/a - Well Hung: 20 Funk Rock Eruptions From Beneath Communist Hungary (reissue comp)
12) Jay Reatard - Singles 06-07
13) Beck - Modern Guilt
14) Bonde do Rolê - s/t
15) Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80 - s/t
16) Titus Andronicus - The Airing of Grievances
17) Vivian Girls - s/t
18) Wavves - s/t
19) Metallica - Death Magnetic (yes you read that right)
20) Sir Victor Uwaifo - Guitar Boy Superstar (reissue)

it was hard to make a list of favorites this year.  lots of reissues, EPs, and comps (all grey areas for me) that were good.

18. Norse Savage: Salute to Odin

I did Google for it.  But then I forgot why I was doing that.

Also the new britney spears album is pretty good.

You think so? I like a couple tracks just like every other Britney album but I thought Blackout was really good and was disappointed to see her handlers bring her back to sugary pop.

I haven't thought about it too much, and the music isn't stunning.  (Though it's better than a lot of stuff that's charting now, like TI.)  I just like how the album embraces what a pile of shit she is.

Oh yes.  TV on the Radio:  I don't get it.  They're pretty good, but so dry and kinda boring.  I don't understand how they keep being people's top faves.  They're a "solid addition to a mixtape" kind of band.  But this from a Britney Spears fan apparently.

I think it's just the year. TV on the Radio is average in my book as well but I can get through the album and I like a couple tracks a lot and the rest are ok. That's good enough for my top 10 this year.

I find myself liking their albums more after I see them live.  I think they're one of the better live bands going right now.

Chris L, I respectfully slap you with my silken glove over the Dirtbombs' record -- "Leopardman at C&A" and "Le Fin Du Monde" are fine tunes.  Though I could have lived without that 10-minute noise noodle on side two.

Yeah, I'll definitely give you those.  On the whole it wasn't that bad but I was hoping for a little more, minus the filler noise jam.

The Wire 2008 Rewind

2008 was so bad I find it completely plausible that a Jandek live album was the 24th best release of the year.

Also, where's Kanye West's italo disco album, or whatever it is?

Are they still playing 15 min. shows?

I do like the new album; Run to Your Grave is one of my favorite songs this year.

I saw 'em last weekend and they played a full set. And unfurled a parachute over the whole crowd (and themselves).

I think Nick Cave is pretty great ~ and Dig, Lazarus, Dig! is particularly good.  Thing is, you're pretty much preaching to the choir with this guy.  The folks buying his albums have been buying them for ten years or more.  You either like him or you don't.

Same goes for Beck, I suppose, who I've never been able to stand personally.

I saw them 3 or 4 years ago and a "full set" lasted 12 minutes (which actually was probably a perfect length).  I guess their songs have gotten longer since then.

Perhaps 2009 will be the year I break down and begin buying vinyl.

Oh, I just noticed that Death Sentence: Panda! had an album this year.  I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but it goes straight up the list anyway.  I was familiar with most of these songs already and they all kick ass.
