The monochromatic paintings of Mark Tansey.  Although his paintings are much better seen in a gallery than online.

The Eatpoo (http://www.eatpoo.com/forum/index.php") forums. They're kinda the fotchan of concept/comic art message boards, sans the anonymity and with a lot more creativity too (uh oh!). Whenever I am feeling shitty about the drawerings, I can go spend a little bit of time there and usually find something to get the juices flowing again, or at the very least hate myself (more) for not being a better artist.

I had to take this with Photobooth, and I couldn't move the computer far back enough to get the whole painting (and there are bananas in the way), but you get the general idea - it takes up pretty much the whole wall.

I just saw a documentary last night about General Idea, a group of three conceptual artists who were based in Toronto (until they inevitably left for New York.) These guys produced tons of hilarious, influential and ultimately quite moving work in just about every medium you could think of.

Baby Makes 3, 1984

There's a bunch of info (including some video clips) about them here (http://videoart.virtualmuseum.ca/artist.php?id=11) and the last surviving member has a website (http://www.aabronson.com/art/gi.org/). (The other two both died of AIDS in 1994.)

One Year of AZT and One Day of AZT, 1991

It blew my mind to imagine these guys working in Toronto in the early '70s - at that point, it was an incredibly staid, uptight town. They pretty much invented the contemporary art scene in Canada!

The doc was called "General Idea: Art, AIDS and the Fin de Siecle", and it's well worth a look if you have a chance.

I find the book Codex Seraphinianus very inspiring.  I'm not sure what exactly it's inspiring me to do.  Possibly make the bowl that chews food in real life.

Why would that be sad? Cool/interesting illustration can be inspiring, even if somebody slaps it on a tshirt.

Cool.  A while back I had the local library get it for me via inter-library loan, so I had a physical copy for a couple weeks.  I hated taking it back.

Where on earth did you see the movies of John Paizs? You can rarely even see them in Canada!

(And yeah, he's awesome. I once told him in an elevator that I'd really enjoyed Top of the Food Chain - after being introduced, even - and he looked at me like I'd just slapped his face. Weirdo.)

Being a cinephile has its advantages. I've had VHS copies of Crime Wave and Springtime in Greenland for years, then one of my friends surprised me with quality DVD bootlegs of both. And of course Top of the Food Chain has a proper DVD release (however obscure). One of these days I'll try to track Paizs down for an interview. Quick question: is he well-known in Canada? What's his status there? For an outsider, it's really difficult to tell - he's virtually unheard of anywhere else.
Title: Re: stuff that inspires you
Post by: Bryan on December 11, 2008, 10:09:08 AM
Paizs is not well-known here at all. Last I heard (which was ~6 years ago) he'd been teaching at a prestigious film school, the Canadian Film Centre, for quite a while. So he's not a complete outsider from the film scene, but he's several tiers below Guy Maddin in terms of strange, Winnipeg-born auteurs.

Seems like the only time his films get screened here is when he's physically present to orchestrate it. I really hope he gets off his ass to do something more personal again. He was just a hired gun on Top of the Food Chain, and even that was something like ten years ago.

I went to a mini-retrospective of his movies in Toronto a few months ago, and despite a pretty good amount of hype in the local arts weeklies, it was pretty sparsely attended. So his following is "cult" at best.

Rock My Religion by Dan Graham.

Actually, the essay and book are way better than the video, because the video is kind of a piece of shit, but you get the idea from the video, and you don't have to read too much:
