Title: Fav. Tom Quote
Post by: DannyBoy on November 13, 2008, 12:50:22 AM
I think it'd be a good idea to have a central thread for this...recent, anyway, if it's been done before.

I can actually use some help with mine, as in the wording/origin. Something like...

"I'll hit you in the face with your baby. I'll take it from you, and hit you in the face with your own baby. That's called a twofer."

I love it, but I'm not sure I'm remembering it exactly right. Anyone else remember this, or have one of their own?

"You want me to recognize you and I won't. I won't acknowledge you. I deny you. So you keep begging and begging. The door is slammed on you. I want nothing to do with you. You will die unrecognized by me."

Although I too can find them pretty annoying sometimes, I never understood why Tom has it in for hippies until I gave the "most self-centered people in the world" critique some thought. After I read Slouching Toward Bethlehem (http://Slouching Toward Bethlehem), Joan Didion's thoughtful profile of the Haight-Ashbury Summer of Love, I could see what he meant. I still kinda think there are lots better social groups in the world to pick on.

I find myself chortling at "Respect must be paid to Ernie Anastos" whenever I tune into Channel 5 news, which is seldom. It just hit my funny bone, what can I say?

It's a punk thing.  Punk as rejection of hippy idealism and naïvety is sort of a core differentiating belief when you consider that the two subcultures essentially hold the same politics.

I don't consider myself a punk either, and I'm embarrassed by so much of what constitutes their ethos.

To clarify: I will forever be offended by the notion of hippies considering themselves to be fighting 'the system' and being all about 'peace and love' while still ultimately being a boys club. The guys got to be the pioneers and screw anyone they wanted while the women stayed behind doing the laundry and making the food. Their utopia was as old fashioned as anything their dads would've dreamed up.

The parts that condemn violence and advocate actual peace? Those are the parts I like, but the hippies didn't exactly invent non-violence.

That's all, really.

Tom.

Dude, at least it's an ethos (http://www.instantrimshot.com/).
