Title: Hot Dog Poll and Query
Post by: Fido on November 16, 2008, 07:55:14 PM
I was just listening to someone who's supposedly qualified to do so give an endorsement of Nathan's Hot Dogs as the best hot dogs anywhere, or something like that. How can that be? Aside from the fact that some are made from beef and some from pork, what the hell is the difference? Aren't hot dogs a relatively undifferentiated product? Or am I all wrong?

I'm not qualified to answer, because I've never really liked hot dogs that much. I have to be pretty hungry to eat them.

Bratwurst is another story, especially if grilled. Italian sausage or kielbasa or other variants I like a lot too.

What are everyone's thoughts about hot dogs or sausages? Are there aficionadoes of either out there?

Also, I thought we needed another pointless poll about nothing, a la cake vs. pie. Too much serious stuff going on in the world right now.

The Applegate Farms ones are really good, they use grass fed beef and are relatively low fat for how tasty they are.

Smart dogs taste like carpet lining, but they keep me away from the Hebrew National hot dogs that I crave.

But my favorite back when I used to eat meat was the salami with spicy pepper casing.  Droooool.

How much you want to wager I am not a vegetarian this time next year?

Woah, I have to try these.

I like hot dogs all right, but they can't compare to a nice bratwurst mit Käse.

Some differences include the spices used, quality/fat content of the meat, and the casing.  I think if you ate the cheapest hot dog you could find in the supermarket and then had a Hebrew National for comparison you would notice a difference.

I'm always bummed I can rarely find this midwest staple in new york grocery stores.

Nathan's hot dogs are really good and a lot different than the standard grocery store brand. They're pretty expensive for hot dogs though, usually around 5 dollars a pack. Uncured hot dogs are always good too and I also like Hormel Wranglers.

I have a hard time believing anyone has not eaten a hot dog before.  Even if you had the hippiest parents around, it seems like at some point when you were a kid you would have been fed one at a school field trip or at a picnic or something.

And it's like anything.  you can get shitty hotdogs (which still taste ok) or good hot dogs (which taste great) and you can definitely tell a difference between the two.

Nathans Hot Dogs are super greasy (and thus, super delicious). I buy them, but I can only handle like one a month.

If ever in Maine, you all should try out some of our infamous red hot dogs. They are natural casing hot dogs that are colored bright red. You can only get them in Maine I believe. So good. So unnatural, but so good.

Not a fan.  Although I wouldn't turn one down in the proper circumstances (town barbecues, state fairs, etc.).  In fact, I'd be disappointed to get anything else.

The best hot dogs I ever ate were from Jo Goldenberg's deli in Paris in 1977.*  I had been sans dogs for a year, and finally getting to eat a couple was a joyous event.  For all I know, they weren't even anything special; novelty may have been entirely responsible for their savor.  Still, a happy memory.

*Fun fact:  Goldenberg's was bombed five years later.  It was rebuilt, though.

hot dogs are delicious- especially nathan's or hebrew national- and one of two things that i refuse to skimp on at the grocery store.

the other is toilet paper.

Only two types of dogs enter this temple: Hebrew National and coctail weiners.

Toronto has a frightening number of hotdog stands, and while I used to enjoy one now and again back in my meat-eating days (1991-this past june), nothing put me off the idea of eating a hot dog more than the smell of one of those carts.

Now, in those times when I am hungry and only have $2 on my person, it is all about the hot dog cart veggie dogs for me. There's very little noticeable difference, texture- or taste-wise, and they smell a little less gross.

Nathan's are kosher dogs, and that's why they taste different. They're also larger than hebrew national or Saval brand, and they're pretty tasty. But really I don't think they taste that different than other kosher hot dogs I've eaten.

Kosher hot dogs are garlicky and delicious and meaty. And they don't have that weird texture that regular ballpark franks have. (I still eat the non-kosher ones sometimes but not when I can avoid it.)

The only kinds of meat I used to like were things like hot dogs, sausage, chicken nuggets, handburgers, etc.  Stuff like steak and ribs always made me want to hurl.*

This is a fun interactive map for anyone who enjoys their ballpark meats squished and encased:

Spoiler: The Dodger Dog gets no respect from The Gray Lady.  But that's okay.  Everyone knows that they're biased towards  onions, mustard and sauerkraut--damn liberal media.

I was just reminded of this: Has anyone else ever had a kosher hot dog wrapped in a slice of fried kosher bologna?

One of my favorite things to get when we went "out to dinner" as a kid!

I ate plenty of hot dogs pre-vegetarianism, so I have experience. I suppose my tastes could have changed in the last six or so years, but I'm not sure I've ever tried a vegetarian hot dog since I assume they're made to taste like the normal kind.

Here's one for vegetarians and meat eaters alike: sides and condiments.

1) Which side(s) do you prefer: Beans, Potato Chips or Mac & Cheese?

2) Condiment(s): ketchup, mustard, relish (India or Sweet), sauerkraut or cheese?

3) Will you eat a plain hot dog in a bun? Without a bun?

Sorry.  I misunderstood.  If you've tried them and don't like them, then of course you've got every right to judge them.  I thought you were getting all snooty and vegetariany on us carnivores.

1) beans at a barbeque, potato chips on a lazy sunday, mac & cheese late at nite.

2) ketchup if nothing else is around, mustard always, relish never, sauerkraut unknown, and cheese on weekends i dont care what i eat

3) hot dogs belong in buns

I often refer to them as "the food of the devil".

I love any frank with a natural casing especially if it's all beef.  We have a brand up here called Pearl that makes franks that are just as good or better than Nathan's, Sabrett or Hebrew National.

1) Chips
2) I used to use only ketchup until just recently when I discovered spicy brown mustard, now I put both on my franks.
3) Rolls, preferably heated or even better lightly grilled or fried.

I have a few pet peeves about hot dogs though, like the famous Chicago Style Hot Dog, where people get bent out of shape if you put ketchup on it because it supposedly overshadows the dog's flavor, but they think it's perfectly okay to dump a dozen vegetables on top of it.  Vienna Beef Char Dogs are among the best I've ever had, but I can't stand all the extras Chicagoans seem to love (same thing goes with their deep dish "pizza").

1.  Potato chips and a good pickle (preferably of the fresh garlicky variety)

2.  Colman's mustard, horseradish, diced onion, and, occasionally, this rhubarb chutney stuff I make

3.  Bun, lightly browned in butter, although I can't stand storebought buns anymore, so, unless I've made my own, I slice the dogs in half lengthwise and use regular bread, toasted and, yes, buttered.

You don't really have to choose, it's just that in order to have a good, old-fashioned feud about a trivial issue, it helps to have a strong opinion. Not having a strong preference is equally valid for most intensive purposes. :)
