Title: chinese democracy - the saga continues!
Post by: Raad_Man on November 20, 2008, 01:45:27 PM
if you're worried about paying full retial for the album on sunday without hearing it first, then you can stream the whole damn thing on gnr's myspace site now!  there's a  lot of gay ballads, but also a few rockers.  sorry and shackler's revenge are two songs that don't suck.

"Street of Dreams" is really tender.

I heard it today.

I'm no enemy of schmaltz, saccharine or the bloated; I endorse rock folly where I can find it and find nothing more heartwarming than a triumph of perfectionism regardless of the pressures of time, critics and fanbase. After all, Immanuel Kant took eleven years off before producing A Critique Of Pure Reason. The establishment was confounded, and a new era in thought and evaluation was born.

Over the years, I have built up a tolerance to all kinds of music. I can enjoy the brapping and splapping of Albert Ayler over breakfast. When in a supermarket, I will find myself nodding along to the banal radio mush piped in. Once in a while, I will admit that the music of Neil Finn is vastly superior to that of Thurston Moore (well, his solo career, anyway). Bad music doesn't exist. The maxim of John Peel stuck with me - there must be a reason they made this and believed in this. If I don't like it, it is a fault with me. That's a paraphrase, by the way.

My relationship with Guns'n'Roses is limited. I remember at high school, someone brought in a boombox and played 'Get In The Ring' really loud and I remember liking the monologue verse which ends 'I'LL KICK YOUR BITCHY LITTLE ASS'. Other than that, I know their singles and videos. I even liked Slash's ostentatious piano-top solo in 'November Rain'. They were a fun little band for a while.

I also don't think that replacing and sacking band members leads to creative ruin. I love Bob Stinson but Slim did the job too. The Fall remain consistently creative, as did Volcano Suns and The Red Krayola, with rotating line-ups. To me, it always felt like the vision of W. Axl Rose and whoever played back-up was secondary. All things considered, I was in a good place to stream their album from Myspace and give it a fair listen.

It is the worst album in the history of the human ear. There is not one good melody, rhythm, vocal or idea expressed on it. At times I felt honoured to be hearing such an exquisite formation of tastelessness; industrial squall here, knowingly old-school 'riff' there, several lengthy solos, weedy auto-tune vocals...this album has the works.

To say it suffers from a weight of expectation for me is wrong - I never really listened to the band in my youth, so I expected nothing, hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I can now truly say there is bad music and Guns'n'Roses have created it.

You're probably on to something.  GnR would definitely be a better band if Axle booted Bumblefoot and recruited Marnie Stern next.

I support a Stern GNR stint in theory, but I wouldn't want it to delay her forthcoming collaboration with Mary Timony.

I listened to the first four tracks and it was so unbearably bad that I had to listen to good music to make up for it.  The vocals at the beginning of "Street of Dreams" are truly ridiculous.

That New York Times review is pretty good.

Umm, sadly the first four tracks is the better part of the album.  You got out at the right time.

I unironically love Appetite for Destruction to this day, I think Lies is pretty good, and I think there are good moments among the bilge on the Use Your Illusions. Having said that, the fact that the few things that've come out under the GN'R banner since then have been truly heinous, combined with the fact that it's been 17 years and a GBV-esque number of former band members, and also considering that Axl has never been responsible for the best GN'R songs (but was usually responsible for the really bad ones), I can't see this being anything other than fetid trash.

I can see late 30's/early 40's buttmetal heads liking this, or parts of it (Better, for example). I have some of them in my family, I will keep tabs in the next few weeks to see what they think.

Man oh man though, I was never into metal or rock really at all, but I remember liking Use Your Illusion some in HS, but this is just bad. Like some kind of cover band at a dive bar bad. Street of Dreams I like though, that's the one that's a duet with Rowlf, right?

Wowzers.

I went back to hell this morning and gave these another listen, but I think Axl is gonna make a ton selling all the instrumentals to these to movie studios etc. Madagascar without vocals sounds like it could be in a James Bond movie or something. That depresses me that he might actually make money back from this too. Gah.

this is probably the biggest day in the history of rock music.  chinese democracy finally came out.  i wish the music didn't suck, but still i am going to get drunk and high so it's not a complete waste.

this i love is the gayest song in the entire history of gay songs.  supposedly axl isn't happy and has gone AWOL.  hopefully he'll go bankrupt soon and be forced to reunite with slash, izzy, duff and drummer.  hopefully steven because he's the best, but i'd settle for pretty much anybody.

I'm writing this from my iPod touch without the benefit of copy and paste and I'm too lazy to post the link... but in last week's paper copy of The Onion, Chuck Klosterman gave an unsurprising A- review to the album in what can only be described as a 'Chinese Democracy' style mess of an article.  He and Axl Rose deserve each other.

holy fucking shit man.  i thought gnr would get more normal after this fucking album finally came out.  but no, it's hte opposite man.

in case you didn't know, dr. pepper agreed to give 'every american' a free soda if the album came out.  well, it did, and their website redemption thing was overwhelemed, so they extended the date you could get your coupon by a couple of days and set up a phone number to call.

but in the mean time, chinese democracy ended up not selling so well.  kanye's gonna be number one.  axl's gonna be a distant two.  he ain't handling it well.  he's decided to sue dr. pepper because they didn't live up to their promise to give every american a free soda.  his lawyer's letter says dr. pepper ruined what was supposed to be a monumental day for music fans.  axl wants them to take out full page ads in each of the biggest papers apologizing to america for lying and ruining cd's release.  and he wants them to pay him a bunch of money for using his 'legendary reputation' to promote their soda.

holy shit this is so funny.  i love axl.  i just wish he made more music that didn't suck.

holy shit man this album is a flop!  it debuted in the number 3 spot, with onnly 260k sold.  ha ha ha ha.  axl failed.  now it's time to get that reunion happening!

even wfmu people who don't like rock n' roll would probably want to go see that show.  i mean fuck, that's what everyone's been waiting for!!

axl's been AWOL for the last couple of months and has refused to say anything about the album or do publicity at all.  the only thing he's put out is his press release about suing dr. pepper.  but the sun is reporting it's cause he's trying to get all the reunion agreements in place.  so fucking sweet!  it's happening people!  a new day has come!

The only fitting topper to this Chinese Democracy catastrophy would be to immediately follow it with a world-wide reunion tour where Chinese Democracy material would not be performed at all.  haha

I wouldn't go to any GnR concert under any circumstance given Axl's reputation for making the audience wait two hours and then play two songs and storm off the stage in a pout like a five year old.  Thanks, but no thanks.

there's a reason this genre of music got shown the door in the early 90s: it's boring, self indulgent, cliched and stupid. it was fine for the time and place with which it is associated, but anyone today who is seriously invested in the doings of GnR - other than out of pure morbid curiosity - needs to get their head examined.

Also, I think that GnR's decision to market solely through Best Buy was a bad idea, while AC/DC's decision to go with Walmart was a master stroke for them.

Yeah, I don't like Walmart either, but you have to admit that it was a brilliant decision.

Quote from:  Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Axl Rose is suing Dr Pepper for what he calls a botched giveaway. Dr Pepper had promised everyone in America except Slash and Buckethead a free soda if the Guns N' Roses album "Chinese Democracy" came out this year.

It was released Sunday. Dr Pepper agreed to give away coupons through its Web site that day, but demand was so overwhelming many fans could not connect.

Dr Pepper extended the giveaway by 18 hours. That wasn't good enough for Rose. His lawyer, Alan Gutman, says the redemption plan was "clumsily implemented" and calls it "an unmitigated disaster." He says Dr Pepper should have negotiated a legitimate relationship with Guns N' Roses for a giveaway.

He's demanding a full-page apology in several large newspapers, an expanded time period for fans to get the free coupons, and an appropriate payment, although he does not say how much. A Dr Pepper spokesman doesn't address those demands but says the promotion was simply "a fun giveaway."

©2008 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, rewritten, or redistributed.   yeah whatever ...

If I was Axl, I'd also demand that Dr. Pepper give free cans to the entire population of China. And that the company must change it's name to "Dr. Bumblefoot".

yeah, but honestly that's part of the fun.  you just get drunker and drunker and people start getting pissed off and there are fights and you can throw shit and then just when you think the place is about to break out in a riot, you hear the awesome teasing guitar intro to welcome to the jungle.  then axl screams.  then all is forgotten until the new songs come on and you start booing and throwing shit again.

i don't care if axl gets fat and can't sing and takes the stage late.  fuck man, gnr shows are just so awesome.  i always come home shirtless.
