I completely understand if no one responds to this, but...
I have a friend who is obsessed with Star Wars. She is in a debate with a friend about this question:
How many velociraptors would it take to kill the rancor that lives in Jabba's palace?
The rancor was the big thing that Luke fought. Just to jog your memory:

And the a velociraptor:

My friend thinks a minimum of 30 would be required. Her friend says only 15 would be required.
Thank you in advance for your time.

I think 15 is a lot. Remember how the rancor died. Not very smart. Clumsy. Slow.
-
I'd say less than 15, more than 6. 8 if I had to pick a number.
-
Didn't Michael Crichton teach us that velociraptors were smart and worked in coordinated packs? If he's right (and of course he must be, esp. now that he's dead), then six would indeed probably be sufficient.
-
6 or less for sure, a pack. Think of Lions who take down big ass creatures, and Raptors are supposedly as deadly, if not more. 30 Raptors could just dogpile the Rancor no problem, talk about overkill - your friend needs to get tossed into the Sarlacc for that number.
Also, holy crap are your friends nerds.
-
And what does that make us?
-
To the Sarlacc with you too, Sarah!
-
It's a fair cop.

this description makes the bar behind my house Rancor Central.

I was looking at a mirror when I wrote that. I don't know, the words just came to me.

This thread is making this guy cry:

In defense of my friend, Wookiepedia (?!) mentions that the rancor can be 32 feet high. The "clever" angle may not work when we are talking about something that big.
Also, look at his fucking arms!
-
i still say less than ten raptors are needed, JFM.

Oh, Martin.

Fair enough.
I would like to see Speilberg and Lucas duke this one out. Who would win that fight?

You mean, before or after Speilberg and Lucas made out for 3 hours?
Under 10, definitely, if it's in an enclosed place with enough space for the raptors to avoid blows.

This one is kind of adorable:

Well now we're just talking a simple transference problem. We know that it takes 13 Kuato's (http://blogs.lvcitylife.com/wp-content/media/2008/04/kuato-blog.jpg) to beat 1 E.T., and it takes 7 E.T.'s (http://www.naitik.net/blog/wp-content/photos/ET_in_Star_Wars_I.jpg) to beat 1 Tauntaun (http://theswca.com/images-toys/figuretoys/tauntaunopenbelly-catalog.jpg), and it takes 18,317 Tauntaun's to beat 1 Mechagodzilla (http://www.henshinonline.com/images/gmmg_production_14.jpg) - although the Lucas to Speilberg ratio (http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/080417/spielberg-lucas_l.jpg) does sort of blow the whole thing out of whack...
I'm a dummy, I think this has become a job for DfK.
-
I thought we were suppose to get over Star Wars already.

You have to call my name 5 times to get me to appear.

clearly, this is a Jurassic Park discrepancy issue.
-
assuming
1 Rancor = 1 grouchy 4 year old AND
1 Velociraptor = 1 nasty housecat
then no more than 5
-
All the velociraptors have to do is get in close and maul the what's-it's Achilles tendons (which of course it has). It topples, and they dart in for the kill. Easy peasy.
-
you only need one. it's all pretty obvious how it would go down.
all the raptor has to do it stick a big bone in it's mouth to distract it and then run through the big opening it came through, when when the rancor chases the raptor halfway through the raptor throws a rock at the controls and the gate comes crashing down.
duh.
-
is there an over/under on this?
if so, can someone smart explain over/under to me?
-

Yeah, but if you're specifically talking about the one in Jabba's basement? No way is that thing even 20 feet tall. Look how big the Gamorrean guard's arm is in his mouth! I say it'd only take four, though you'd probably lose two in the process.

Same as the number of Batmans required to take down a Santa Claus.
Tell your friend she makes me sick for asking people this. Let me know what her reaction is afterwords. Thanks for doing this, Jon.
