I would say that the quality of the comedy could be considered the best of all years that the Best Show has been on.
From the New Regime to the Mayubenatorial Election and debate, the calls from Tod Palen and Joe the Plumber, The H Man updates, and just everything else this year, I would say that Tom and Co have hit a high mark. Looking forward to the next year.
-
The saddest part of the Mayubinatorial election is that it would never be possible to fit onto a CD set. Like so much else of the Best Show, it's too big for radio, too big for television, too big for any form of media other than the internet.

The Mr. Sherbet call might be my favorite so far.

That was pretty great, but there's been MUCH better than that this year. Nevertheless ...
Let's go for a walk.

Good year for special guests. This coming week's guest will only add to that legacy. I hope I don't have to work late that night.
-
Won't be able to listen live, but I agree with mos. Good stuff coming up!

Agreed. This streak of guests is pretty remarkable.

Whos the guest next week? When is he going to do the Mr. Brooks movie night thing?
-
Mr. Brooks is - by default - going to be in January. There's too much going on in December for me to do it right.
And it will be done RIGHT!
And it will be done IN JANUARY!
Thanks for being patient -
Tom.

This year has been really good, but I think that 1977 is generally regarded as the best year of the Best Show.
Though it was confusing at the time and ultimately short-lived, Tom's lengthy back-and-forth co-hosting with the combustible footballer Merlin Olsen is listed in the Penguin Guide to American Comedy as "the high point of American laughter."
-
The Mayubinatorial Debate was one of the most brilliant pieces of comedy I've ever had the pleasure to witness.
Talk about slow roasting a dish to perfection.
-
I don't go back far enough with Best Show to speak with authority, but 2008 was a year full of highlights for sure.
-
I would say yes, though I have listened to this year in full and only cherry-picked pre-2006. I can't pinpoint it, either. For me, it's always been very consistent, and arguably this year is not as 'innovative', with (seemingly) more guests and less 'crazy' or 'character' shows. There are more genuinely laugh-out-loud moments per show. It also seems a lot friendlier and accessible too.

I really liked '05 and '06
I'm a Tommert and Capt J fan.
Also the Wuster character who is always saving people until it turns out he's the one causing all the mischief.
That has to be my favourite turn so far.

Are you talking about Brock Peuchk? If so, that was 2007.

Samir's favourite call of ALL TIME, that one.

I almost knew I was gonna get that wrong
it felt like '06 to me.
Now I got to dig it up and listen again.

I just relistened
damn there are about 20 amazing things on that one
somehow I just had it compressed in my mind

The connections between 70s and 80s news anchors and the punk & new-wave bands of the time was an eye-opener, to say the least. You might even call it an L-B.
I still need to check out some of those Cronkite commentary tracks.
(pppppfffffffttttt)

I agree with the people saying 08 has been the best year yet. I hope 09 is even better!
-
Here it is at the halfway point for 09 and already Tom has hit another high water mark. So far the shows this year have surpassed anything in the past years. Amazing guests. Amazing shows.
From the Brushman to the Mike Show, The six hour marathon, and so much more.
Great work Tom and the gang.
Making my mouse pledge worth every cent!
-
I don't know if 09 has been the best year for the Best Show as a whole, but I think this has been the best year for Tom's performance specifically. Of course, JW's contributions continue to be spectacular, but Tom seems to be digging deeper and deeper on a weekly basis and hitting new notes all the time. Whether it's the recent streak of amazing guests, or even the more emotional and personal stuff, Tom is bringing it like it's never been brought. Amazing.
-
i think the archives are proof that the best show gets better year after year.

When I first started listening, I'd comb through the archive descriptions to see if there was anything of interest in each show. It soon dawned on me that I could literally just scroll down and pick ANY episode and have a great 3 hours of listening.

I liked Matt Fraction's comment that the Brushman episode seemed somehow like "Best Show Fan fiction".

quality/frequency of guests & tom's riffing w/ other comedians is at an all-time high imo
the calls vary.. but a lot of that is out of the hands of anyone at the station
-

Samir's favourite call of ALL TIME, that one.
I think I might agree on this one, with the Maurice Kern/Philly Boy Roy Peniscillin/"repossess your presents" call as a close close second.
I agree with whoever says the Peuchk call compresses in their mind. I always forget the absolutely phenomenal Cronkite (RIP) DVD bit and the Sanders/"The Beard" bit are in that call, among a couple other absolute gems.
-
mighty boosh guest stars and we're only halfway through the year. i love the best show.
-
After the Gathering of The FOT on Tuesday, do I even have to ask?
Get Metmerized, A Gathering of the Juggalos, the guests, the Wurster calls, The Tom album, it's just too much to list.
The Best Show gets better with every show.
You can take that to the bank.
