Title: brainstorming a niche website: FOT collaboration?
Post by: cutout on December 17, 2008, 08:22:50 PM
All 3 of these sites have an incredibly simple premise, and because of their popularity all 3 creators have gotten coffee-table-book deals:

http://www.hotchickswithdouchebags.com/
http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/
http://icanhascheezburger.com/

This will probably be the next one to blow up:

http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/

I bet the FOTs could brainstorm the next big niche blog. We just have to point out a phenomenon that no one has sufficiently run into the ground yet. If you pitch it, I can build the website. And its imminent success will finally score Tom his book deal. Everybody wins.

i had an idea for, and own the domain for mymostprizedpossession.com. It was basically gonna be one of those user submitted content deals where people would photograph (or draw, if it didn't exist anymore) the item that they considered the most valuable tangible item (none of this "my baby daughter's giggle" bullshit) they own/ or have ever owned. the pics would be accompanied by a short blurb about what the thing was, and what it meant to them.

someone called the idea gay, so I kind of got discouraged. then, i just got lazy.

i'll sell you the domain and idea for 25 vintage Flooz credits. PM me.

Lots of photos of people mid-blink, looking awful.  Kind of like Sploops' "avatar" image from some time back.

S'okay for me to buy this name? I don't wanna step on toes...

Actually, it looks like it's already Passive Aggressive Notes: 1, Tom: 0 (http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/the-book). I'm awaiting the phone call in which they offer me a percentage, because they published the one my neighbor put up (http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/2008/10/28/and-all-the-pieces-matter/)!

My new favorite niche blog is Sad Guys on Trading Floors (http://sadguysontradingfloors.tumblr.com/). Even though their comments aren't very funny, the concept stands up all on its own.

I've seen other sites that remind me of this concept, and if people are creative about it -- not dumb about it, like you were suggesting, it's a great idea. Not that I really have the time to implement it myself. (It reminds me of clever and cool stuff I've probably run across on design websites.)

If people call an idea like that gay, they're probably not people whose opinions you should listen to anyway. Don't listen to the haters!

Title: Re: brainstorming a niche website: FOT collaboration?
Post by: pinky on December 18, 2008, 09:04:14 AM
I reckon the mid blink is a very good idea!!  I had the idea at work once of just a blank page with a comment box where people could just write whatever and the comment list would keep going forever, then it went the way of kickthebobo's idea.  I am putting my vote in for mid blink.  I work in domain management and can help launch this thing globally if its a success.

On another note I just this second had a brilliant idea that I have never seen done before...   Novelty toilet brush holders!!!   Tell me you wouldn't buy a George Bush toilet brush holder that opens at the mouth next christmas!!

The nice thing about emo gorillas is that we can make all of the content ourselves, simply by haphazardly photoshopping emo heads onto gorilla bodies.

The problem, of course, is when we get sued.

(This one is particularly good: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-dk1axrNmqU/SUfbdUNr-MI/AAAAAAAAGX0/Hw9z9b2CMRE/s1600-h/QuoteFireAlarm.jpg)

Fail Blog: http://failblog.org/ A Compendium of Failure

http://www.engrish.com/ A collection of mistranslations.

The Icanhazcheeseburger site, however, took an already existing internet meme, LOL Cats and Macros, and gave them their own site. They profited off a pre-existing idea. That's a little annoying, I think. It's like comedians telling street jokes!

I'd like a one stop destination of stores who have puns for names. And the site itself can have a pun for a name. Verypunny.com

Street jokes is what I thought was the term for the sort of jokes that seem to exist without any known author. Like, "A guy walks into a bar. There's a horse there. The guy says I bet I can make that horse laugh..." Those kind of jokes.

Fellow FOT.

You all have outstanding senses of humor. So I need your opinion.  Regarding midblink.com, should I remove the titles of the pictures and just post them? I am feeling a lot like Bob Saget commenting on "America's Funniest Home Videos."

"Who cares?" is an acceptable answer.

Thanks,
