Title: Christmas Music Haul
Post by: dave from knoxville on January 03, 2009, 12:37:16 PM
I got loaded up for Christmas with lots of music 95% of you would absolutely hate (hmmm, I wonder if Ms iam found a song she liked yet? I think I sent her around 2300 of them.)

Anyways, I wound up with all of these beauts

Dylan - Tell Tale Signs
Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus
Neil Diamond box set
Simon and Garfunkel box set
Best of the Guess Who
Keane - Perfect Symmetry
Alan Parsons - I Robot
Coldplay - Viva la Vida
Glen Campbell - Meet Glen Campbell
Split Enz - True Colours
TV on the Radio - Dear Science
Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees

Also, I heard Jesse Thorn's interview with the Dirtbombs; they seemed like the kind of guys who would have loved a big cheap box of wine.

I got a lot of vinyl records from my dad and my father-in-law.  These included:

The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper, Revolver, Meet the Beatles, and Let It Be
Bob Dylan: Desire
Neil Young: After The Gold Rush
The Band: The Last Waltz
Jefferson Airplane: Volunteers
The J. Geils Band: Freeze Frame
The Go-Gos: Vacation
The B-52s: Whammy
Adam & The Ants: Dirk Wears White Sox
ABBA: Greatest Hits Vol. 2
Bruce Springsteen: The Wild, The Innocent, & The E-Street Shuffle
Hubert Laws: Afro-Classics
Steve Martin: Let's Get Small
George Harrison: Greatest Hits
Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks: Original Recordings
Peter Frampton: Frampton Comes Alive
The Kinks: Everybody's in Showbiz
Traffic: The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
The 5th Dimension: The Age of Aquarius
Puccini: Tosca
Billie Holiday: Strange Fruit
v/a: Will The Circle Be Unbroken
The Earl Scruggs Revue: Anniversary Special Vol. 1
Some crazy synth record, Switched on Bach
Eddie Peabody: Banjo Wizardry
Zubin Mehta: Hits from the Hollywood Bowl
Richie Havens: Richard P. Havens, 1983
Doc Watson: On Stage
Vanilla Fudge: Renaissance
Chick Corea: Return to Forever

I realize this sounds insane but mostly I was just taking boxes off of their hands and they were happy to see them go.

My little brother got me (also on vinyl):
The Evens - Get Evens (Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina's new band, really really great)
TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes
And he gave me back the Misfits: Earth AD/Wolfsblood record that was mine in high school.

I also got myself some records in Bloomington:
Laurie Anderson: Big Science
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings: Dap-Dippin' With...
A 5-record set of Mahler
Henry Mancini: Best Of

And on CD I scored:

The Clash: Live at Shea Stadium
Jay-Z: The Blueprint 2 and American Gangster
David Bowie: Aladdin Sane
And Love, Peace, and Poetry comps from Asia, Chile, Britain, Turkey, Japan, and Brazil.

I need to harass family members for free records.

Most family and friends are too scared to buy me books or music.  Scared of my sneers!

Yeah, it was great to get all these records, but it's also a one-time deal.  And my brother had already picked through them, and I had to fight with my sister over them.  The only ones she got that I'll really miss are Magical Mystery Tour, Blonde on Blonde, The B-52's, and an Ike and Tina Turner record.  I think I still made out OK.

I should ask my aunts and uncles if they want to get rid of their records but I figure if they haven't rid themselves of them by now they probably want to keep them. I have my dad's old collection and my feeling is that anything I get from other people are just going to be duplicates. I kind of want to look through their collections and see if they have mono Beatles and Dylan records. My dad bought them all in stereo and tells me he could have bought them all in mono... 50 cents for mono- 1 dollar for stereo or something like that.

I found twenty pounds of Acoustic Guitar magazines today at the recycling center.  How is that for a holiday music haul?   ........yeah, not that great.

dfk, i was waiting until i moved into my new place (this past weekend) to listen to them.  it all has to do with being in the right frame of mind, allowing myself to marinate in the music.  trust me, ill have favorites.  ive been bragging about these CDs for days.*

but i have started the books already.  seriously, im so glad i got a fellow TN as my SS.

*try explaining to people that youve received the most awesome gift from someone whos not really a stranger, but youve never met them, however, you felt compelled to pass out your address over the internet to a different stranger to pick at random for someone (luckily you) to send gifts to all because of a radio show from jersey you listen to that no matter how many times you try they dont think is funny at all.  ive got to shake off them haters.

Yeah. I know. I was trying to explain it to my mother-in-law. The best I could come up with was "the other members of this fan club I belong to..."

I just went to a local record store's going out of business sale. 40% off.  This is probably the best haul I've had for $34.

I agree, G.K.  I think that's why Mike keeps bringing up Jonestown.

Me too. I also got Bon Iver, which I'm loving even though it's too wimpy to get much acceptance from the rest of the cult.

I got that Madlib record, and it's pretty good, but not as good as some of the other stuff I've heard on DJ Rupture's show.

Dare I add my birthday record haul to the thread?  I fear I'll break poor DFK's heart.

OK.  Don't everyone hate me.  Or, if you're tempted to hate me, go to the Princeton Record Exchange and get your own haul.  The new records are fairly expensive, but the used records are kind of an incredible deal:

The Beatles - White Album, Abbey Road
Wings Over America
The Pixies - Come on Pilgrim
Who's Next
Patti Smith - Easter
The Modern Lovers - s/t
ELO - Out of the Blue
Hall & Oates - Live at The Apollo
Cabaret soundtrack
Blondie - Eat to the Beat
R.E.M. - Murmur
The Impressions - Greatest Hits
Nas - I Am...
Talking Heads - s/t
Beethoven's Symphony No. 5/Schubert's Unfinished Symphony split disc
Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything
Bach - Works for Organ Vol. 8
