I'm on a compilation kick right now.
I like this one:

For twee fans.
Favorite V/A compilations?

This was one of my first CDs. I still love it.

Some good bands on there. I always wanted them to do a volume 2, but I realized they probably ran out of good cartoon theme songs...

I used to really like the Junk Records compilations, but they declined in quality and, now that I think about it, I don't even think they're still around.
These days I really like Le Beat Bespoke comps and the Eccentric Soul Series.
Problem with the Eccentric Soul series is that the song titles are hardly printed anywhere on there. I have to stand over the record and try to read it while it's spinning around if I hear something I really like for the first time. Plus you're paying top dollar to listen to the songs that never tracked very well, even in the climate that would have most accepted them. Buyer beware!

The Capsoul installment in the Eccentric Soul series is great. Who Knows by Marion Black is pretty unbeatable.

I am not ashamed to say that the Powerpuff Girls compilation "Heroes & Villains" introduced me to a few of my favorite bands. It's really good, folks.
The "Pop Ă Paris" collections are fun compilations of 1960s French rock, including a sweet cover of "Paint it Black" by Marie LaforĂȘt.
"This Bird Has Flown" Indie rock people covering "Rubber Soul," including Ted Leo's "I'm Looking Through You."
And finally, I guess this is technically a soundtrack, but it's a video game one, so I'm not counting it. "Stubbs the Zombie" is a compilation of indie rock folks doing covers of 1950s classics. Pretty great.

What is on that Powerpuff Girls comp, Ramsey?
And agreed on the Stubbs the Zombie soundtrack. Rouge Wave's version of "Everyday" is pretty great.

What is on that Powerpuff Girls comp, Ramsey?
Favorites:
Apples in Stereo "Signal in the Sky"
The Sugarplastic "Don't Look Down"
Frank Black "Pray for the Girls"
Optiganally Yours "Walk & Chew Gum"
Also has Dressy Bessy, Devo, bis, and Shonen Knife. All original songs that are semi-Powerpuff related. These are some pretty standard names now, but when I was in middle school this was quite the revelation for me.

That comp sounds great. And I used to love the Powerpuff girls!
The Girls in the Garage 8 Volume Collection is super great. The whole thing--- I can't pick just one CD. It's out of print but easy to find online. Just great garage rock, girl groups, all female fronted.
I also love the Ultra Chicks comp-6 volumes long, but focuses mostly on foreign beat and ye-ye music. Yet another collection where I can't pick just one CD. Big thumbs up.
And last year I picked up two comps that proved to be great for summer...

Both are thoughtfully compiled and most excellent. Could also bring you guys a little sun during these dull winter months.
And for contemplative wintertime hippie fairyland folky snow-gazing (if you're into that), there's this:

When I was 13 the Pump Up the Volume soundtrack was important to me. The second Blech mix on Warp is the best electronic compilation ever.

If you like Shakin' Fit, You'll LOVE
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h74/ejhuggins/l7806.jpg)
This stupidly awesome comp features the abba dabba do song as featured in the striptease scene in TBS's version of Roadhouse

Yep, and Jerk, Shake & Vibrate, Pow City and The Git Down are of similar quality.

Some of the French (and Turkish) stuff that Beth has posted in the Downloads section of this very forum has been of the toppest of all notches.

Jerk, Shake and Vibrate was good, but a little uneven. Jimmy Soul's "Take Me To Los Angeles" and Lee Moses "How Long Must I Wait" are worth the price of admission.
Now that I think about it, there's one comp that rates as "pretty good" in my book, but it has two of my favorite songs on it. "All Tore Up" can be found on Crypt Records, and it features two of my absolute FAVORITES, hands down. Lee Moses "Bad Girl I&II" and Carol Jones' "Don't Destroy Me." Those two are as good as it gets. The rest of the album isn't too bad, but it pales in comparison.

I like the Crypt Records comp Lookey Dookey a whole bunch.

I've really been enjoying this one:
It's an overview of the music produced by the Jamaican community in Toronto. More soul/funk than reggae. You can listen to one of the songs here: Chips-Chicken-Banana Split by JoJo and the Fugitives (http://www.lightintheattic.net/releases/jamaicatotoronto/audio/03_Jo-Jo_And_The_Fugitives-Chips-Chicken-Banana_Split.mp3).

Often overlooked, always fantastic: the Mastercuts series (http://www.discogs.com/label/Mastercuts).

as far as comps for the sake of fun nostalgia go, i did enjoy this in my youth. i watched a lot of old cartoons/shows when i was a kid, making me familiar with the themes on this comp before my time. not to mention, anything "modern" at the time i was exposed to via VHS or laser disc.
i also enjoyed this fun comp:

For a great series of top compilations, check out Terre T's playlist from the Cherry Blossom Clinic's Top Best Great Comp's from 2008. Every one of these were really good.

Ditto on the Beth gifts.
I got the #7 in the Eccentric Soul series and I gotta say I'm a little disappointed.

Pretty much all of the Yellow Pills comps are great if you're craving a power pop fix. I'm pretty sure, if he were still with us, Power Pop Pop Pop would approve of the collection. I'm also pretty sure that pills/fix pun I just made would have made him fly into an uncontrollable rage. I'm sorry, Quad-P.
I also approve of all six volumes of The Sound of Leamington Spa (http://www.twee.net/spa/volumes.html). There are gems on each volume.
Also, that Sound of Music tribute Waaaaaaaaah Records put out (I always forget how many A's are in the label's name) is pretty great, but I have decided I am mostly disappointed with Blueboy's cover of "My Favorite Things." And I like Blueboy. And that song.
