Quote from: the article
Later, her friend stopped by the bakery and said Kefalinos corrected her about the name of the cookies—they're actually drunken "N-word" cookies. She says the backwards baker then repeated the dark suggestion that, like Lincoln, President Obama "will get what's coming to him." Go Secret Service, go!

here's a conundrum: do you think that they actually said "n-word" cookies, or did they said the actual word?  If they said the actual word, should it really be in quotation marks?  also, is that word so vile that it shouldn't even be used in the context of a quote in a news article? (although, to be fair they probably would have said "the f-word" or "s-word", so that last one probably really doesn't apply here.)

And who is this creep Kefalinos? Is this even real?

Now I feel bad for poking fun at Alabama during my recent trip there by asking when their next Klan rally would be taking place. The real culprits are down the block from me. Great.

The difference between the north and the south is that in the south, this wouldn't be news. It would be a dessert your grandma created the recipe for.

No, the difference is that the South has actually had to face up to its racist past, to make amends.  To endure scrutiny.  The rest of the country, most of which has no idea what it's talking about, gets to make stupid statements like the one above.  And wallow in its own racism.

My state hadn't voted for a Democrat since 1976.  NC voted FOR the first black major-party candidate, when it wouldn't vote for the effete jackass snob 4 years ago (hell, I voted for Kerry, but NC didn't).

Don't talk about something you only know from documentaries and anecdotes.

Speaking of racism, look how those awful Southerners and their grandmas took to the streets to beat up black people (and people who they wrongly thought were black) in the streets of Atlanta Jackson well, read to find out where...

I don't pretend to understand what you meant about Julie kicking my ass, but how dare you throw my life's work under the bus!? Consider the line crossed, hill person.

yep, us liberal yanks can be quite bigoted as well. I would probably say that the most racist place I've ever been has been the family dinner table during thanksgiving, which just so happens to be in one of the strong blue states. And trust me, it doesn't make me proud.

really though, the ONLY way to make this guy pay for his ignorance is to:

a) make a concerted effort to have as many black people patronize his store and DEMAND the offending cookies. What would this chump do if there was a crowd of people every day who just had to have that cookie. Ideally, it would get to the point where he had nothing but African-American customers. Some would ever suggest that he add even more "outrageous" items to the menu.

b) Have every other bakery in the area create a "fat white slob" cupcake/cruller/danish and totally make that the new hot item to have with your coffee. Turn it into a standard bakery item.

I've been stewing about this for the past 45 minutes and now would like to propose a new civil war. Me and a bunch of apathetic yankee snobs versus you, your whole mobile home community and a jug of moonshine. What say you, klansman?

And New York is, after all, unfortunately the home of Archie Bunker, who was a fictional character but all too seemingly real.

A & B above could work quite nicely if the whole process served to completely ridicule the guy and his store. It would be great to see Channel 2's "Shame on You" feature revived just for this purpose, with the cameras rolling at this guy's store, and customers of all ethnicities participating in pranking this putz.

You're not even in the north.  Washington state's population consisted of nothing but tree-sitting androgynes and latte-sipping trade protesters during the Civil War.

This mockery of justice has gone on long enough. There were no baristas in the American Civil War! What were they making lattes out of, slave tears?

does anyone else think its funny that its being suggested that the worst posible punishment for this guy is to fill his business with black people every day?  is having black patrons really that bad, you racists?

It shouldn't be in quotation marks, right? Shouldn't it be in brackets or something? Help... Saraaaaahhh!!

My first reading of this thread.  It reminds me of Chinatown.  Actually, no--it reminds me of FOTchan.  Sweet, sweet nostalgia.

But to answer your question, Fido, if they are actually called "drunken n-word cookies," then no quotation marks, brackets, or anything else need surround "n-word."

I can't claim to have the grammatical prowess of a Sarah but couldn't it be written like "drunken [n-word] cookies" since "n-word" was added to the guy's quote replacing the actual n-word?

or is that only for replacing pronouns?

When I looked at the picture in the linked article, I immediately imagined the guy talking in Tom's Staten Island voice. And I laughed.

Thank you, Sarah, for coming to my assistance.

I passed by this place today, by accident actually, when taking friends from out of town to a nearby mystery bookstore (they sell mystery novels; there's nothing else mysterious about it). Outside the bakery a picket was taking place. Maybe 20 or so people had braved the freezing cold to advise everyone to boycott the place. I was pleased to see them, and it wouldn't have crossed my mind to go in anyway. Feel free to express your feelings about the effectiveness of such a demonstration, bitch about political correctness or whatever. Save your breath -- I hope this creep gets what he deserves.

Yes, Colin.  If "n-word" was being used to replace "nigger," then placing it in brackets would be correct.  As I said, I was working on the assumption that "n-word" was the actual term used in the name of the cookies.

What if they made a drunken n-word cookie that was the n-word (not "n-word" but the explosively offensive other word that "n-word" signifies), but like written all wobbly on a cookie, like a drunk person wrote it?  In chocolate?  Someone would have to bury it!
