Hello all -
Every year I do a song with WFMU's Hoof And Mouth Orchestra at the conclusion of the 2009 marathon. I am having a hard time picking one this year.
The song needs to meet the following criteria:
1) Rocking.
2) Long-ish.
3) Epic.
4) Can translate well to a karaoke type band situation.
5) No ballads.
Past selections have included:
Born To Run
A Quick One While He's Away
Paradise By the Dashboard Light
Paradise City
LA Woman
Magic Carpet Ride
Please list your selections ASAP right here!
Thanks!
Tom.

Cowboy Star?
-
You're Just Too Good To Be True
(rockified)
-
Powderfinger.
-
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
-
I Won't Back Down.
-
Watching The Detectives.
-
Oooh! Ooooh! LIKE A HURRICANE!
-
"Eye of the Tiger"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V1DuHUs22Q
-
TV EYE. Or anything off Funhouse. In tribute. Okay, I'll stop.
-
"Ever Loving Man" by the Dirtbombs.
-
"Jet" by Wings.
-
Pink Fairies - I wish I was a girl
-
For now I'll repeat last year's suggestion of "Cum on Feel the Noize."
-
Has "Institutionalized" been done?
-
Sister Christian
-
"Call Me". I have this demented urge to hear Tom sing lyrics meant for Debbie Harry.
-
"let there be rock," ac/dc.
-
Sister Christian
Wait. Is "power ballad" a subset of "ballad?" If so, then change my recommendation to a seconding of Dan B's "Jet" recommendation.
-
I'm going to continue recommending songs. "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant"
-
I want to hear you sing a Stevie Wonder song, but I can't pick. "Higher Ground"? "I Was Made to Love Her"?
"I Wish"? One of these.
Edit: Forget "I Wish". Not epic enough.
-
Robert Tepper's "There's No Easy Way Out!"

-
Slip Inside This House!
Oneida-style, maybe.
-
Or Scandal's "The Warrior."
-
Or Scandal's "The Warrior."
Can I second that?
Another suggestion: Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug"
-
"Mama Weer All Crazee Now" - SLADE
-
rocking ABBA medley a la The Dan Band or a mashup
mashups are big nowadays I hear

-
Has "Institutionalized" been done?
Yes. (http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/SW/2003_-_Belinda_-_Institutionalized.MP3)
-
"Something In The Air" by Thunderclap Newman!!!
Or ...
"Blaze of Glory" by Jon Bon Jovi
"Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through" by Meatloaf
"Radio Ga Ga" by Queen
"The Hero" by Queen (from the Flash Gordon soundtrack ... I can't help it ... might be too short though, but certainly epic and certainly rocking!)
-
"Sex Bomb"
-
"The Winner Takes It All"
-
"Another Girl, Another Planet"
Not too long, but damn good.
-
Roll with the Changes REO Speedwagon
-
Aerosmith - Kings and Queens
Saccharine Trust - I Am Right
Kiss - Newbridge Rock City (or, c'mon, Black Diamond!)
-
Kick Out The Jams
-
Ace of Spades
-
One Way Street - Aerosmith
The Pusher - Steppenwolf
Rock Bottom - UFO
Razzmanazz - Nazareth
The Bomber - James Gang
Turn to Stone - Joe Walsh
Midnight Rambler - Rolling Stones
Children of the Grave - Black Sabbath
Madman Across the Water - Elton John

-
Your Cover's Blown by B&S?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNCCmyHdWa4
-
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
I have to second this one. If not CSN(not quite yet Y) then I'd suggest you go with "All the Young Dudes."
-
INXS - Need You Tonight/ Mediate (Preferably with cue cards being flipped).
-
Dolenz is out of the Hate Pit this year, so I'm suggesting "Goin' Down" again for the most epic song possible.
McCartney suggestions:
Too Many People or Monkberry Moon Delight from Ram
The Red Rose Speedway Medley
Call Me Back Again from Venus & Mars
Others:
Moonage Daydream
Life On Mars?
House of the Rising Sun
Hair of the Dog
Funk #49
White Light/White Heat
God Gave Rock 'n Roll To You II
Funky President
Ball of Confusion
-
Cheap Trick - Surrender
-
Soft Boys - I Wanna Destroy You
-
Looking through Itunes for songs that fit the bill:
"Great Expectations" KISS/Simmons
"Station to Station" Bowie (The retuuuuuurn of the Thin White Duke, throwing daarts in lovers' eyes)
Err... "Love to Love You Baby" Donna Summer. Perhaps not appropriate, but definitely a long song.
-
Wes, you are beautiful. I have to second "Goin' Down".
-
The Future/Leonard Cohen
The Wrestler/B. Springsteen
-
Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
-
The Saints - Nights in Venice. Or the entire Abbey Road medley.
-
The Who - "I'm One"

-
Frida Payne - Band of Gold
-
The Butcher and Fast Eddie - Rose Tattoo
The Chain - Fleetwood Mac
"Heroes" - David Bowie
-
If Tom somehow thinks he can't hack it and passes on Goin' Down, my backup dream choice would be a number by a fellow Morton Downey Jr. enthusiast, Rowdy Roddy Piper's 1985 smash hit "For Everybody":

If there's a song with lyrics that better sum up the attitude of post-New Regime Best Show, either I haven't heard it or it wasn't recorded by an actor/singer/professional wrestler.
-
You don't fool me, Wes - that's Huey Lewis.
-
Wah-Wah
Uncle Albert, Admiral Halsey
Dazed and Confused (25 minute version)
-
The Wrestler/B. Springsteen
YES!
-
The Wrestler/B. Springsteen
YES!
No ... "Outlaw Pete!" Bruce Springsteen
P.S. BEST SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW EVAH!!!
-
Led Zeppelin - No Quarter or Achilles' Last Stand
Beatles - I Want You/She's So Heavy
KNIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN
-
You don't fool me, Wes - that's Huey Lewis.
Whoa...I think you just blew my mind almost as much as the Brolin/Bale thing.
My heart, luckily, is still beatin'.
-
Soft Boys - I Wanna Destroy You
I'll second this one and also add Under Pressure to the list. Okay, I'm out now for real.
-
Come On Eileen.
-
Come On Eileen.
Awesome. Think the band can pull it off?
-
I liked the "Hollywood Nights" recommendation from last year.

-
If on the Seger tip let's not forget "Night Moves"
Rock and Roll Never Forgets
-
If on the Seger tip let's not forget "Night Moves"
Rock and Roll Never Forgets
Rock-n-Roll Never Forgets/Old Time Rock-n-Roll done as a medley
-
2nd side of Abbey Road
Won't Get Fooled Again
Can't You Hear me Knockin?
-
Baker Street
-
with Tom mouth-jazzing the sax parts
-
"Marquee Moon" - Television
10 minutes of awesomeness.
-
The Final Countdown.
-
Roadrunner
-
'Yoo Doo Right' by Can or 'Space Is The Place' by Sun Ra. Both of 'em on the longer side.
-
'see my baby jive' by roy wood.
'i believe' by buzzcocks.
and i'll have to second 'rock bottom,' as suggested by master of sparks.
-
The Move, "Brontosaurus" or "Do Ya".
Cheap Trick, "Surrender".
-
I don't know how well any of these would work in the aforementioned karaoke environment, but:
"Suffragette City"
"Fortunate Son"
"Kashmir"
"Folsom Prison Blues"
"I Want to Take You Higher"
"Personal Jesus"
-
"Roundabout," Yes
"Hold the Line," Toto
"Personality Crisis", New York Dolls
or you could just go inside baseball and do "Good Guys Win"
-
I love L.A.
-
"Dancing in the Street" with Paul F. Tompkins.
-
^ and Julie Klausner!
-
Going to have to second Masterofsparks' suggestion for David Bowie. Not sure if Heroes is the ideal song or not, so much to choose from. Bowie definitely has longish and epic covered though!
-
"Suffragette City"
Ahh, good one!
-
If you're a DJ singing Bowie on your radio show, you've gotta go with ...
"Star Man" ... that was crazy cosmic jive.
-
Frankenstein - New York Dolls
-
The song has been selected. Thanks to all who pitched in on this; someone here suggested the winner! And thanks to that person!
Tom.
-
Can't wait to hear your Jack Brewer impression!
-
I guess I'm too late to suggest "Then Came the Last Days of May" by Blue Oyster Cult.
I can't wait to see what was picked!
-
Do we have to wait 'til the marathon to know what the selection is?
-
Yes.
-
I can't WAIT!!!
-
As for other DJs, I'd love to hear Clay Pigeon do Thin Lizzy's "Chinatown."
-
"Marquee Moon" - Television
I second this. As Tom once said, "It's like Layla for smart people."
21st Century Schizoid Man might be fun with an orchestra.
-
It's not strictly a rocker, but I would kill to hear Tom sing Hymn for the Dudes by Mott the Hoople.
-
gotta be surrender
-
Michael McDonald medley
Lovely Day by Bill Withers
-
Damn. Winner picked.
I'll save chiming in with "Left Of The Dial" for next year ....
-
That's a pretty good song, and would be a good one for an FMU event. Keep that in mind, although I doubt anybody would pick it up.
-
Yes - "I've Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People"
COME ON! you know its the right thing to do.
would really love this
xo
Jonah
-
"Love Lift Us Up Where We Belong" by Joe Cocker.
-
Only "The Revealing Science of God" would be better.
Yes - "I've Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People"
COME ON! you know its the right thing to do.
would really love this

-
So when does this happen? Friday night? Saturday night? Sunday night? When when when?
-
Sunday night. Check the FMU site for exact start times, but I'd guess around 7 or 8.
-
Thanks MOS!
-
Paul McCartney's Venus and Mars / Rock Show.
-
This takes place Sunday night at Maxwell's in Hoboken. It's a public event, so people can come on down and check it out!
I go on toward the late side of things. Here is WFMU's description of the event:

Thanks Tom!!! Remember: Sing from the soul and you can't go wrong.
-
Tom, if you do this you're going to miss the Kings premier
-
Tom, if you do this you're going to miss the Kings premier
Hilarious!
"He can have all the magazine covers he wants!!!"
I think that, and ...
"Do you have anything to say about this, McG?"
... are the two greatest quotes of 2009.
-
Is this event going to be archived?
