Title: The Worst Song Ever
Post by: mcphee from the forum on February 05, 2009, 08:52:55 PM
Sometimes I wish I had a time machine just so I could go back to call in on topics I missed.

Because the worst song ever, no matter what anyone says, is "Take Me Home Tonight" by Eddie Money.

I think Tom was right with the first Worst Song Ever show - The Load Out is as bad as it gets.

It is a tie between "What's Up?" by the 4 Non Blondes and "I Believe I Can Fly" R. Kelly.  Both of those songs make me want to put my head in the oven.

Tom needs to put together a compilation album of worst songs.  Perhaps a 2 CD set, the second CD being his "commentary" on the songs.

He should record intros to each song ala Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy on the Anchorman soundtrack.

The last awful song I heard was "Young" by Hollywood Undead. Thanks for that junk, Rock Band 2.

But when we speak of the truly dreadful, "Cowboy Star" has got to be in the top 5.

The Gran Torino "theme song" that Clint Eastwood performs at the end of that movie is one of the worst songs I've heard in years. His singing voice sounds like he had both lungs surgically removed.

The Clint Eastwood/Ray Charles duet "Beers to You" from Every Which Way You Can is also really really bad.

I third it.  I started laughing.  The only laughs of that entire evening, actually.

What a rough movie.  Ugh.

MY VOTE goes for "Hotel California"

Fake reggae voice, vibraslap (I'm sure it's in there somewhere), unintelligible lyrics.  That song is the worst.

I could not get past 10 seconds of that.

Is this what MTV is inspiring these days?

Yes.

Remember that episode of Buck Rogers where that band is becoming hugely popular and then they turn out to be Satanic?  Remember when it shows that band playing and it's just so ridiculously bizarre that you said to yourself "Music is never going to get THAT weird!"  Well, it's getting there.

P.S.  That is the same episode where Buck proclaims, "I like Three Dog Night."

The song itself is just boring but seeing who performs it makes it something else entirely. It's as if they collectively own one Tricky 12" and heard a Daft Punk song on the radio and decided to form a band despite having never heard any other music ever. It's amazing, really. Certainly cannot qualify for the worst song ever, for me at least, if only for its anthropological implications.

Didn't that song later show up in a Grand Theft Auto game as lowrider contest music? Outside of the Buck Rogers context it sounded kinda cool.

EDIT: According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Buck_Rogers_in_the_25th_Century_episodes) that Buck Rogers episode featured a character named "Tarkus" and another character played by Richard Moll. Also: Jerry Orbach!

I was going to suggest the song "Life is a Carnival" by The Band but that brokeNCYDE song is just awful

pretty good criticism from their wikipedia page:

Says August Brown of the Los Angeles Times, "The 'Albucrazy'-based band has done for MySpace emo what some think Soulja Boy did for hip-hop: turn their career into a kind of macro-performance art that exists so far beyond the tropes of irony and sincerity that to ask 'are they kidding?' is like trying to peel an onion to get to a perceived central core that, in the end, does not exist and renders all attempts to reassemble the pieces futile."

I couldn't take my eyes off of it! It's like watching a train wreck. An inadvertently hilarious train werck.
This should be the theme song to Tool Academy.

brokeNCYDE may be the worst band name ever, and "Freaxxx" may be the worst song title ever, so these guys are working on a trifecta. But I don't know, for me this song might be crossing over into "so bad, it's good" territory. The auto-tune abuse. The vomitous screaming sound looped endlessly. The utterly pointless F-bombs. It's just an amazing confluence of moron signifiers.

I'll agree with Steve from NoH that the incomprehensibly weird future has arrived.

I love how their website describes brokenCYDE as "crunk/screamo/electronica." I'm embarrassed for Albuquerque, being mentioned in this context.

This is really, really old, but I respectfully (?) resubmit it as the worst song I could think of:

But, despite how much I hated "What's Up?" and how it had that odd way of getting stuck in my head in repeat all the time in high school, the song actually has some odd nostalgic merit. Mind you the memories it pulls out are ones of teenage misdeeds and disgust. It's nostalgic memories of misdeeds and disgust, however which has some merit and pulls "What's Up?" just out of the worst song ever ranking for me.

I think the Spin Doctors also have this effect on me.

Sadly from work I cannot watch that brokeNCYDE clip, but two things I found of note... from their wiki page:

Quote
Members
Se7en (screams/gangster raps)
Mik L (autotune vocals)
Phat J (synths/backup vocals)
Antz (fog machine and lights)

Make of that what you will.

Wow, i feel like I just took A chain to the face. I gotta go lay down.  You nailed it Steve.  Imagine if these kids lived next door to you.  Imagine your son is the lead screamer in brokenCYDE.  All things most of us can be thankful we're not. There is something kinda endearing about four wealthy suburban teens, who are all wildly talented & obviously know how to party.  Fighting against their parents & the laws of nature to become "HUGE Crunk/Screamo/Electronica STARS".  I can't wait for the movie.  Actually, this is straight out of "Idiocracy", YIKES!  Check out their myspace page, too funny.  http://www.myspace.com/brokencyde

I meant to say "you nailed it Stupornaut".  I'll never be the same again.  I was going to suggest "To Hell With The Devil" by Stryper. I think brokencyde may be unrivaled with "Freaxxx".  Steve's points were also very true.  I loved that episode of Buck Rodgers.  Cheers!

I listen to low-budget crunk and electro club jams for days. I just don't get the logistical mishaps in this particular song's lyrics, the incompatibility of party-time vibes + angsty yelping and the weird shift towards sub-Rollins venting in a song that, in its first verse, was previously an ode to totally telling them bitchez to hop up on this.

There's still a HUGE line between what's good music and what's terrible music, regardless of what demographic you fall into.  For example, I'm a white male from the suburbs who dabbled with rap music in my younger years, but have since sworn off rap and clung more to my rock roots.  But I'll freely admit that there's still good rap music being made.

These brokenCYDE fellas ... In a way, I commend them for taking the risk of blending four flavors that already taste pretty terrible by themselves.  But if I ever catch Nate and his buddies listening to this, the belt's coming off.*

*I do not advocate violence toward children.  I just happen to wear a leather belt that's been handed down through my family with the names of the greatest music artists of all time branded into the inside of the belt.  Every time a new master takes to the studio, in any genre, we brand their name into the leather.  So far, there's still about 19 inches of belt left ... It is a 50 inch belt.  So, I would have to take it off in order to show the kids that brokenCYDE is not on the belt.

I was in a Mexican restaurant recently where I heard "Stranglehold" twice in a row. When it started the first time I thought it was totally awesome and I should go download it and give it a proper listen at home. By about midway through the second play, I became so morose that I couldn't finish my tacos or my margarita and had to leave.

I did not have a chance to read this thread until now because I have been swamped at work. But coming and going to and from my place of business, I have been thinking about what song I was going to propose. "Wild Wild Life" was going to be my proposal. How could the same band that gave us the majesty of "Crosseyed and Painless" give us that flaming turd in a paper bag?

But Stupornaut, with that brokeNCYDE song, you have completely shut me down.  I think if Eli Roth ever makes "Hostel 3," he can just have the bad guy strap people in a chair and play this song once.

Has anybody heard that song, it's some new hiphop thing I heard on the radio the other day, that samples "Time of the Season by the Zombies? Which I always thought was one of the creepiest songs ever recorded. ("What's your name? Who's your daddy? Is he rich like me?")

Oddly enough, it's not the worst hiphop song I've ever heard. I listened all the way through, expecting it to be absolutely horrible at some point, and it never quite got there.

What about any track off of "Rock N Roll Jesus" by Kid Rock.  Specifically that shameless piece of ripped off garbage, "All Summer Long".  I have to agree though, brokeNCYDE is the worst.
I'm guessing all the tools on Tool Academy love brokeNCYDE.  There are 178 reviews for their latest EP on iTunes.  A four star rating, very respectable.  A few of the reviews will surely put A smile on your face.  "Let's get freaxxxy now!  Let's get f***ing Freaxxxy now!  RRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!", or is it "NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!"?  I'm still dizzy.

This is just offensive. I'm not sure which is worse. The Mall punk music they play or the diabolically bad lyrics. "Have you no shame, sir?" Where are "TRB" from?  I'm guessing some place where being informed & asking questions isn't cool. You've made it A tight race, JonFromMaplewood. I thought brokeNCYDE would run away with the title, crossing the finish line running backwards.  I would pay anything to see both bands racing for the title. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's not a joke. That song by TRB - The Right Brothers - has been around for a while. At least a couple of years. I especially appreciate that the guitar line uses the schoolyard "Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nah" jeering melody.

World's Worst Song Created Scientifically
February 10, 2009 4:42 p.m. by Kali Holloway

With all the time wasted creating software that purportedly scientifically calculates which songs are most likely to be hits, resources are being routinely diverted from figuring out which songs will suck. Seeing a need where no one else has (and where none really existed), composer Dave Soldier and artists Komar and Melamid asked some 500 visitors to their website to offer insight into the music they’d least want to hear. From there, the three wrote a song that they say “Fewer than 200 individuals of the world’s total population will enjoy.”

Which seems slightly aspirational because it’s actually not so bad. You can tell what ranked highly on the list of things hated in music: horses cloppity-cloppying; tubas; bagpipes; off key operatic vocals “rapping”; and, unexpectedly, children singing (harsh, right?). But instead of mashing it all together and creating one bombastic, 22-minute-long sound pie, the song veers from genre to genre, making it seem like a kind of novelty song, or something a children’s songwriter might put together for laughs. And while it’s definitely annoying, there are worse songs. On the charts. Really.

it's important that we have the time on that byline because we can compute, to the minute, exactly how long it took Kali Holloway to report a story from 1996.

Copland is not country, but he was certainly going for that vibe with that composition.  I can see the twirling dresses at the contra dance when I hear Hoedown.

Don't get me wrong, Dave. I like a lot of ELP.  But some of my favorite bands make bad choices (I still think For the Benefit of Mr. Kite is one of my least favorite songs). ELP also bummed me out when I saw them footage of them covering Dave Brubeck.

I knew someone would post "Life is a highway", but I have to respectfully disagree

I came to the conclusion that "life is a highway" could easily be the ending credits song for every movie ever made, and it would fit in perfectly

This is one of my contributions. I saw this video on tv when I was young and was so happy to find it on youtube

Wow, that Pierre Nadeau song was really bad, even kinda stands out for me on this list.

I was just remembering how one time one of my best friends selected a bunch of songs on the jukebox in a diner where we were having dinner. The theme of the songs was: songs I hated. A carefully compiled list of songs that I despise. I can only remember a few of them:

"I've Been to Paradise" (mentioned above)
"Kokomo" by The Beach Boys
something by the Eagles, probably "Take It Easy"
There was probably some Billy Joel in there too.

I thought it was hilarious.

This song is so Goddamn bad. It angers me. Who ever in all the planes of existence thought that hip hop, a vocoder and scream-o would work together?

And yeah B4-4 is horrible, too. When someone said that two of the guys have a new CD out, I started to laugh. (I dunno, are they Steven and Chris, or something?)
And Steve in North Hollywood, I totally agree. If I was doing max reps of two plates benching and that piano riff came on, first, I would wait to see if it was Werewolves of London (because the aaa-oooo part is fun), but whence I find out it isn't, I would definitely be tempted to just leave. That's why I neeeeed an iPod to work out.

Exactly, I could work out to Werewolves of London or Sweet Home Alabama, if necessary.  But Kid Rock should be thrown into the middle of a belt-whippin' match for what he did to those songs.

I love how he spent the early part of his career trying to prove how "urban" he is.  And now, he's just playing to his audience and pretending he had nothing better to do as a kid but hang out on the lake, boating and throwing keggers.

Make up your mind, you munch!

If he hadn't served our country in the National Guard, I'd ... Oh wait, he DIDN'T!!!

After reading the lyrics to this beautiful song, freaxxx, I'd suggest that we're all duty bound to exsanguinate the young men of brokencyde:

I walk into the club looking kind of sexy now.
I see these shorties in the corner, they started making out.
They pull their panties down, they take their pants off.
Then they started getting freaky on the dance floor.
Shake it mommy give it to me like you need some love.
I got some bottles in the caddy that we can open up.
Let's get drunk tonight, baby we don't have to f**k.
And bring your friend along, maybe we can have some fun.

Let's get freaky now, let's get f**king freaky now. [x4]
I got these b**ches all tipsy trying to sex me.
I know they want it, alcoholics are some sex freaks.
This ex and chronic gots me wanting to get messy.
So let's get messy girls, come on let's go get messy girls.
Come on b**ch, you know you want this.
That hardcore s**t will make you feel the toxic.
Versace, Rolex watches.
Bently coups with the 20's droppin.
Convertible top, and the wheels spin.
I can taste that ice when my grill is in.
If you want me baby feel me in.
'cause I don't waste my time with lesbians.

Let's get freaky now, let's get f**king freaky now. [x4]
Liar! [x8]
Oh baby why did you have to lie to me.
I can't play no more games.
These thoughts are slowly controlling me.
You're turning off the flame.
So go baby go baby.
You don't want me.
So go baby go baby.
Come and get me.
So go baby go baby.
You don't want me.
So go baby go!
Come and get me.
Let's get freaky now, let's get f**king freaky now. [x4]

Tom needs to put together a compilation album of worst songs.  Perhaps a 2 CD set, the second CD being his "commentary" on the songs.

Such a set could be 'curated' by Philly Boy Roy, as with his box set of Philly Greats.

Completely true.  I wish I could say it wasn't but it really is.  If I could test drink coffee for Illy coffee company in Italy, or work at Touch and Go records, maybe I'd trade.

But even then, I'm not so sure.

After watching it a few times, I think the best part of the Jacko video is actually the very beginning, when it shows that photo of his face in the background which makes it seem like Jacko has died, and we're about to view a memorial for him. But then it disappears and Jacko himself pops in from the left side of the frame, smiling, as if to say "Gotcha, I'm not dead at all, as it turns out!"

I like to think that Paul Hogan is a friend to everyone. He just seems like that kind of easygoing guy. But I could see he and Jacko perhaps not completely getting along because of how differently they approach life. Still, whenever any kind of disaster or threat to Australia crops up, I have no doubt that the two of them would join together - along with Yahoo Serious, Rolf Harris and the feral kid and gyro captain from The Road Warrior - to save the day.

On this 'I'd rather Jack' song:

First off, catchy song.  Thanks for that.  It's been in my head all morning.  I need to drive it out.

Also, who's Jack?  Or does it mean 'I'd rather have nothing than Fleetwood Mac'?

Also if we'd had that attitude here in the USA, we would have had 4 more years of Bush I, so I'm glad the song didn't catch fire here.

I was so sick this weekend that I pretty much just left the TV on the same station for 48 hours. This meant I got to watch the Junos in all their delightful entirety, and while the whole thing was pretty terrible, the worst part was definitely the live version of this thing:

You know what, I know I've laid my cards on the table by exposing you all to BrokeNCYDE and exhibiting my severe distaste for their watered-down yet amazingly, hostilely stupid emo-crunk, but to hell with it: I like Loverboy. This is probably because they were my idea of what rock music was when I was five, and that kind of stuck with me. (It is also probably because there is something wrong with my brain.) I will say that they had the good sense to try and stop making hits 20 years after they were popular, which is more than I can say for Bon Jovi.

I didn't watch (I actually worked on the Junos show for several years, so I know better than to watch it), but I heard on the news this morning that Nickelback swept every category, plus won the Fan's Choice award. It's really super depressing, especially since pop music in Canada has actually never been better than it is right now.

The answer is clearly "That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars
Oak tree youre in my way
Theres too much coke and too much smoke
Look whats going on inside you
Ooooh that smell
Cant you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
One more drink fool, will drown you
Ooooh that smell
Cant you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Now they call you prince charming
Cant speak a word when youre full of ludes
Say youll be all right come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you
Ooooh that smell
Cant you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Hey, youre a fool you
Stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before

One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, lord might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks
Ooooh that smell
Cant you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Ooooh that smell
Cant you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

The horrendous glowing sneakers aside, this song has some of the weirdest lyrics ever. "Basically what we're gonna do is dance." + the jewel you quoted above.

I was thinking about this today, and could only come up with Three Dog Night, and even that's highly debatable.  Oh, and I guess The MC5 are on the good side.  But seriously, Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Seven Mary Three, Finger Eleven, Sector 7-G, 311, Stroke 9, Eve 6 ... All terrible!  And all still getting waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much airplay.

Oh, and I was thinking about this as I changed the radio station from a channel playing "Sex and Candy" by Marcy Playground, and landed on a channel playing "Push You A-round" (I can only assume that's what it's called) by Matchbox 20.  Then screamed, in aggrevation, for a solid sixty seconds.

Big Steve, I can forgive a lot, but don't start ripping on the numbers, man, I can only take so much.

I guess I am some sort of unhip dolt, but I still like lots of U2. B-52's first album is still a lot of fun. KRS-One had moments, as did early UB40. The Four Tops are hunky dory in my book. Early Jackson 5 tunes still move me. Dave Clark Five was kind of fab, sort of early hard-hat pop. Despite possibly being linked with Spike, I like the 5 Satins. Death From Above 1979's You're a Woman, I'm a Machine isn't exactly enjoyable, but it's kind of interesting. 5678's do that retro thing pretty well. And don't forget 1989 Heavy Metal Grammy winners Jethro Twoll (songs from the wood make you feel much better.) The Twooters? Twoodd Rundgren?

What, do you think everyone else has magic little creatures in their head, but outside of their brains, but inside of their skulls, that make the sounds of everything going on around them? If so, then you are like my friend Lee who talks to his pancakes, and whose pancakes talk to him, and who told me my toe hurts because I have aliens in my stomach. That's much worse than hearing things in your brain.

SOOOOOO, I play drums in a band, and these guys (not me, at least not as much) are sorta obsessed with this song.
Additionally, we're recording a cover of it.
Additionally, we're making a record with Jim Diamond right now.

ADDITIONALLY he's pretty much the most super, great, and kind person I could ever hope to work with.  He is, straight up, a tremendous guy.

I must respectfully challenge this nomination, Emma. This is music made for kids. My daughter loves it! And I loved shit music when I was a kid too.  I mean, let's face it, "Miss Lucy Had A Steamboat" is pretty awful, but would we include it in this discussion?

Let us pick on those who truly deserve it: Songs written for adults by adults that fail miserably. Like maybe Bob Seger's "Yellow Beret."

In terms of songs from the past few years, I think it is a tie between "Ladies and Gentlemen" by Saliva and "Let it Rock" by Kevin Rudolf. Both are the kind of awful songs you hear at sports events or in commercials for energy drinks but you could never imagine a human being actively seeking to listen to them.

I read somewhere that the Kevin Rudolf song was made the official anthem of WWE. That sounded about right to me. It's not my cup of tea, but when I think about what tune might fit with John Cena, The Undertaker, monster trucks, people with ink all over their bodies, etc., it kinda made sense to me.

They used it to plug a pay per view show they did not too long ago. It fit nicely, which was weird because they tend toward nu-metal (still) and other forms of buttrock. I thought it'd be way too poppy for WWE, but Fido was right.

In fairness, I heard about them on Idolator first.

But now their new song (as mentioned on Idolator in what I assume is the Samir's-day-ruining capacity) actually drags E-40 into their nonsense! This makes me angry, since E-40 is one of the greatest weird-voice/unpredictable-flow MCs going.

You will, I hope, note that the forum hasn't gone after Sizzla or Buju Banton.  Respect.

Respect indeed!  But here I go, about to break that streak - I have to admit I find it much harder to justify supporting so many of these Dancehall guys through their sometimes blatant and violent homophobia again.  It was something that I just chose not to deal with for so long because, for example, "Inna Heights" was SUCH an amazing record, and evinced what seemed to be a rather compassionate soul in Buju Banton, in contrast to a lot of his previous work, like "Boom, Bye-bye" that just showed the mind of another violent gangster waxing tough, and I always want to believe that people can grow and change (because then there's hope for myself, you know?).  But then it started to bug me too much.  Hell - I went through a DECADE of not listening to the Bad Brains before making a still somewhat shameful deal with myself to not deny the genius that WAS my favorite band of all time because the singer went off the rails into nut-job Rasta religious and/or political fundamentalism (and, a few years after writing the offending song, also went through an extremely queeny phase, living as a "kept man" for some rich dude in LA, then became "just a nut-job").  It's a familiar story, I guess - Wagner, the first couple of Skrewdriver records, a lot of Black Metal, a lot of Rap, etc.  How do you accept a body of work that has these offending bumps in the road (or in the case of Skrewdriver, of course, takes a complete left turn into offense so cartoony that it would almost be laughable if there wasn't a direct correlation between their music and the actual injury and death of human beings)?  And for that matter, am I revealing a bleeding heart or a selfish skill at avoidance in even suggesting that there's a question?
And on top of THAT, why did I stay up twittering about CrabCore so late last night?  It's put me in a mood to question everything.
But NOT my love for Ian Curtis, to answer your other question.  I honestly can't even address the idea that he was a "terrible lyricist" and that their "music was dull" with getting hot under the collar.
So I'm gonna go jump in the ocean instead.

The remark about Ian Curtis was out of line. But their music bores the hell out of me. I've never understood their appeal. I don't think they were doing anything that hadn't been done before. Bands from Germany like Neu! and Cluster had been making the same kind of music for nearly a decade. The only difference was Martin Hannett's production and Ian's morose lyrics. Someone can convince me otherwise.

I apologize for offending you TL.

So I'm gonna go jump in the ocean instead.
 ;D

Wow man. This is certainly the deepest post I've read on this forum. This is an issue that has plagued me for a while too with Bad Brains and to a much greater extent with Skrewdriver. My father was jewish, I have African American heritage on my mother's side, and my brother is bi-sexual. I can't in good conscience tolerate such blatant examples of ignorance. I can still get into the early Bad Brains because as you said HR is a nut job but Skrewdriver is just disappointing. Due to this issue I stayed away from Turbonegro for about 10 years just based on the name but then I found out about their whole deal and I get it now. It's really tough to find out that a musician or any type of artist that you respect is so far off of your own ideals. Honestly I think that with the collective consciousness of the world today ignorance almost has to be chosen. I can't imagine anyone actually believing that another race is inferior to their own. I think it's some type of weird doublethink thing where young people just don't want to admit to themselves that their parents are so wrong about such a big issue, it's the same reason people still spank their kids and vote republican.

PS I'm not a fan of Joy Division but I'll take them over Steve Miller any day of the week.

It's far from the worst song ever, but I heard Oasis's "Don't Look Back in Anger" in a record store last weekend, and I was blown away by how lazy it was. That Gallagher dude just pasted together every easy hook he could come up with and called it a song. Pretty boring stuff.

I listened to Buju Banton for a while, but when I heard about the gay bashing incident he got dumped in the cardboard box of stuff I probably will never listen to again. It is probably not consistent with my other listening choices, but I had a visceral reaction resulting in his banishment to my own personal hate pit.

Ha! Good one. I don't know if it's the worst song ever, but it's definitely the worst White Stripes song by a wide margin. Hearing that the first time gave me the queasy feeling that some sort of musical or awful concept album must be in their future.

I have been exposed to so much Steve Miller over my lifetime that my brain no longer hears it.  My neurons have re-wired to not take notice so that they can pay attention to more important stimuli in the environment, like an approaching tiger or my childrens' voices.

The claps in "Take the Money and Run?"  Like the Music of the Spheres: Everywhere and therefore unhearable.

I saw a movie called Series 7: The Contenders which was interesting to say the least but there is an 80's style video in it for "Love Will Tear Us Apart" that is so funny that I always laugh when I hear that song. Otherwise I dislike Joy Division but not as much as Steve Miller.

Gene Simmons' cover of Firestarter (Yes, the Prodigy song)

The worst thing about this cover is what a straight cover it is - down to the "hey, hey"s in the background, and the keyboard, which may have just been dubbed in from the original track.

Never a musical innovator - but Gene can do better than this.

I know it's far too easy to pick on the auto-tune, and I know this is more comical than straight-up bad, but still. I was made to listen to three different versions of this song tonight and the weird wavery chorus part is ear-bleedingly awful. Plus the whole idea behind the thing is ridiculous - it's not "it's my birthday so you should have sex with me," it's "aren't you lucky to be able to do it with me on your birthday?" He even says he's not going to get her a cake! AWFUL.

Sorry, the lack of someone riding their bike to a burlesque show in that thing threw me off.  Hacky Sack, anyone?

Hacky sack gets such a bad rap.  My non-hippy friends and I used to hacky sack all the time in high school and college.  It was just something to do on sunny days when all your tie-dying was stinking up the dorm.

Yah, that really stank, but I have to admit it was fascinating to see how he practically detatched his jaw like a snake swallowing a whole egg to singshriek that chorus.

Also, I stopped the song at about the 4 minute mark. He probably should have too. Kinda said it all, didn't he? Did I miss the third chapter in that miserable story?

AC, you made it to the 4 min mark?! Are you punishing yourself for something? I made it to the 1st verse. Still don't think it's worse than Asher Roth though, Roth sounds like Sublime and Eminem had an untalented kid and filled him with an undeserved sense of entitlement.

Everything about this song is the pits, from the terrible lyrics to the auto-tuning. I hope this song doesn't get stuck in any of your heads, but then again --it's not even catchy enough to get to earworm status IMO.

The Gran Torino "theme song" that Clint Eastwood performs at the end of that movie....

A very schrewd choice...

I'm gonna go with the One Week by The Barenaked Ladies.

A good one as well. It didn't merit any where near the radio play it got...

Still, I think I'm going to go with the timess suck nugget, "My Own Prison" by Creed. Sure, they're an easy target but that song gets even more derivative with time...

But "Wind Beneath My Wings" is right down there as well...

Nope.  Meaning that there are way worse songs out there (don't ask me to name them, because I always draw blanks at these moments; why then should you pay any mind to what I say? you ask.  I answer, beats me).  This one is mediocre and about thirty years behind the times (unless it was recorded circa 1982), but its badness is unremarkable.

I'm only a year and half late, but this is definitely the worst song ever:

Everclear - AM Radio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjg39XRkjVc#)

I don't know what I hate most about it. The lazy sample? The nostalgic pandering? The chants of "Yo!" coupled with crunchy post-grunge guitars that are supposed simulate excitement? The fact that Everclear once ostenibly had some kind of punk rock cred? The basketball jersey?

It's the song that Smash Mouth would have rejected for being too lowest common denominator.

In any case, it kind of makes you feel like Art Alexakis meeting his doom on Everest wasn't an entirely bad thing.

Yes, it was a good try, but that is definitely NOT the worst song ever.  Frankly, that one guy's moustache puts the entire thing closer to the Best Song Ever end of the spectrum.

I still say Mike's offering of "Cowboy Star" by Ambrosia was the winner of Worst Song Ever.  And my opinion matters very little.

Everclear inhabit that special region of horribleness where they are so bland and boring they are somehow worse than bands that are actively bad in the traditional sense. Sort of like Smashmouth, whom somebody else already mentioned.

We're comparing an all-boy band in England from over 40 years ago against one L.A. girl's parents today spending money for her music video?  You lost me.  If you had brought up The Runaways, at a mere 35 years ago, that could have been a more apt comparison.  Except a) Rebecca is clearly not being sexually exploited by anybody within the video, even if these Ark producers have done shady things with other young people in other videos (and yeah, I'm not going to watch all those videos to see if that's the case), b) The Runaways, all awful ethics and abuse aside courtesy of Kim Fowley, were GOOD.

..and at this point, I'm going to step back because it was obvious from the start of the thread, we each have a different take on what The Worst Music is.. for me, it has to be not only aesthetically bad (which is really easy to find), but also ethically bad, and done nonetheless by those who should have clearly known better. The music and/or video should be judged alone, though. Part of debating Bad Music is all the internal conflicts and conditions we discover and place on ourselves.

I still stand by my Kosmo Jarvis submission from months ago in this thread.

Turns out I was wrong!

It's Ark Music Factory producer Patrice "Pato" Wilson and he has quite the biography. It's eerily similar to that of an arms dealer/blood diamond smuggler.

The entire thing is terrible. Will.i.am? Autotune?! You don't say! However, the part that had me in stitches was this exchange between the two:

I wanna fly, fly just like a bird! (But you are a bird!)
Oh, yeah. You're right!

I just saw the Colbert video. Wow. That's great.

I've been pretty obsessed w/ the whole Rebecca Black experience since you all pointed it out to me here.

I think this bit shows how crappy pop music production is these days. On its face, I don't think Friday is a bad song at all -- it's just a bubblegum pop song that's supposed to be about fun. It's not too different from something from the Bay City Rollers or Tommy James or even the Go-Gos.

But the production of the original is just absolutely dreadful. The Arc Music Factory guys were onto something with the melody and rhythm, but all of the bells and whistles that they put on are just awful. They took a decent enough hook and just made it as homogeneous as possible so it could get on the playlist of a place like Z100. Instead of going for something original, they went for Katy Perry: The Teenage Years, and it completely fails, since the whole Wil I. Am-style pop music is some of the worst ever music ever made.

I'd imagine that the arrangements of the Jimmy Fallon Show version fell in the hands of ?uestlove and The Roots. I'm not a huge Roots fan (for no real reason other than "I just can't get into them") but those guys are total music nerds and know how to deconstruct a song and put it back together.

They found the part of the song that almost works and then made it ACTUALLY work. I honestly think that if Rebecca Black sang over the Roots version, it would be a decent enough guilty pleasure.

I probably lost all of my indie/protege cred with that defense of Friday.

It's not too different from something from the Bay City Rollers or Tommy James or even the Go-Gos.

really??? the lyrics are easily the worst part of this song. it could have the greatest production in the world and it would still be a fucking joke.

What song for teenagers doesn't have the worst lyrics ever? The song is the evolutionary step from something like "Lollipop" or "Rockin' Robin" or something like that.  It's just supposed to be fun. Look at how much fun Colbert/Fallon & Co. are having -- they put some bombastic Queen-type of flourishes to it (with the fireworks and group singing) and it totally works in an over-the-top manner, despite the inane lyrics.

If you're listening to this song from an adult point of view -- yes, the lyrics suck. But if you put yourself in the shoes of an 8th grader, which is the intended audience, then, on its face, it's not that bad. But the production of it is so generic (including that ridiculous MC Scratch Kat-esque rap part) that it gets in the way of what's supposed to be just a fun, disposable pop song.

I would really like to see something like the Handley School (or that chorus from a NYC public school) do this song.

I also kind of respect that this is sort of a DIY thing. It's not some Miley Cyrus or Katy Perry thing which is this whole pre-fabricated marketing campaign. Some girl wanted to be a singer. Her parents found a way where she could make a single on her own (not in itself DIY in the indie sense) and she made a video where she had to get all her friends to take part and it ended up a viral sensation (after being ceaselessly mocked by Tosh.0, who is just a total bully). I like that narrative arc better than someone like Christina Aguilera.

I think there's way worse music than Friday. A 13-year-old girl singing about how she can't wait for the weekend isn't supposed to be taken seriously by adults. I'm much more offended by something that's supposed to be geared towards folks like us -- intelligent people with good taste -- that just panders. See: The Strokes, who I think are the biggest collection of posers in music history.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division is a classic song.  Even those who find it overrated or just not their thing would likely not ever call it The Worst Song Ever.

Alas, some folks have finally made that deed possible. A band called The Complete Stone Roses, a Stone Roses tribute band if you can believe it, apparently ran out of Stone Roses songs to murder, so they turned their knives towards other Manchester classics.  And they made a video, a horrible horrible video.  This isn't Cosmo Jarvis bad, but it will make you want to watch that "Friday" video again.

I don't know, I don't like it, but at the same time if all of pop music is just going to be dudes singing about their dicks all the time, as it seems to be, it's at least nice to have some diversity in terms of things you can be super grossed out by.

Donut time!  I don't mind this, honestly. It's self-consciously weird and just there, but also kinda funny too.
True, if we're not counting half-Greek George Michaels, Greece has been pretty sparse in its offerings, but it did make possible one incredible Vangelis vanity production via the group Aphrodite's Child -- the 666 2-LP.

Hank Williams III - Dick In Dixie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTk3fGpo2Lk#ws)

LYRICS::
Well some say I'm not country
and that's just fine with me
'Cause I don't wanna be country
with some faggot looking over at me
They say that I'm ill-mannered
that I'm gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I'm thinkin'
you'll know that pop country really sucks

So I'm here to put the "dick" in Dixie
and the "cunt" back in country
'Cause the kind of country I hear now days
is a bunch of fuckin' shit to me
They say that I'm ill-mannered
that I'm gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I'm thinkin'
you'll know that pop country really sucks

Well we're losing all the outlaws
that had to stand their ground
and they're being replaced by these kids
from a manufactured town
And they don't have no idea
about sorrow and woe
'Cause they're all just too damn busy
kissin' ass on Music Row

So I'm here to put the "dick" in Dixie
and the "cunt" back in country
'Cause the kind of country I hear nowdays
is a bunch of fuckin' shit to me
And they say that I'm ill-mannered
that I'm gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I'm thinkin'

Here's how I deal with pop country:

I've figured out there are only two types of country song in pop country now: Tough Country Guy/Gal or Sad Country Guy/Gal.  I try to figure out which one it is and how the singer's delivery of Tough Guy or Sad Guy compares to other awful renditions I've heard.  It helps get me through on those rare occasions I have to hear it.

I've probably heard 150 pop country songs since I came up with that theory and have yet to find a single one that didn't fit into one of those two categories.

Unfortunately for Hank Williams III, his song is a perfectly seamless example of Tough Country Guy.

I don't think he was ever part of the band.  But don't let that get you down:

Quote
Danzig has said he wishes to avoid extensive and exhaustive touring in the future, preferring instead to focus on his various music, film and comic book projects: “I don’t really want to tour. My reason for not doing it is because I’m bored of it. I like being onstage, but I don’t like sitting around all day doing nothing. I could be home, working.” Danzig has started work on a third Black Aria album and intends to record an album of cover songs from a range of styles including garage rock, early 70s metal and punk rock. Danzig also hopes to record a dark blues album involving Jerry Cantrell and Hank III.

OK, here is a weird nomination for worst punk song ever. I only became aware of this album a couple of weeks ago. New York Gong, and About Time, and the second track in particular - Much Too Old/Black September.

So this is Daevid Allen out of Gong, attempting to be punk, backed by Bill Laswell's Material. The music is largely pretty good, punk-funk stuff. But the lyrics and especially the vocal stylings....ewweeeeee.

Gong, as you probably know, are an archetypal hippie nonsense band, although Allen was originally in Soft Machine. He normally sings about flying teapots and gnomes and the like. And now he's going to be punk, and pretend to be from New York, and dress like Lou Reed on the cover.

It starts fairly badly, Allen singing in deadpan

'I've paid my Arabs and I've paid my Jews/When I go to Harlem I get the white boy blues'

By the time he gets to the 'chorus' he goes full on prog warble, with lyrics eulogising 'Punk Rock City'. I can almost imagine Laswell waving his arms behind the mixing desk, holding up a sign saying 'PUNK!'

Then there's an insane bridge where he talks about the 'Punk' acts he's seen:

'Seen Teenage Jesus at CBGB's/Got diahrrea from Chick Corea'

OK, Chick Corea not really punk, but now he's adopted a Johnny Rotten mockney growl. At this point, as the title suggests, the song changes into a completely different one, suggesting splicing from different sessions. By the end, Allen sounds genuinely unhinged, chanting in a Jimmy Pursey voice 'Chemical Warfare, IRA, Black September, DEA'.

All very strange stuff.

That stunk. In fairness though, I don't think he's claiming Chick Corea is punk; rather he is strengthening his claim on punk credibility by disdaining Chick Corea in a graphic, physical way.

This might be the worst thing I've ever heard in my life! It could also be Mother 13 come to fruition.

The New Radicals rank as the biggest influence for Boulder-based "MTHDS", combining white-boy rap with some chilled out acoustic bro music. It has also been a long time since a band has so transparently worked on a look in hopes to one day open for an extreme energy drink-sponsored alt-rock radio show. They are so incredibly punchable!

I've seen this around lately, feels like there's a concerted "going viral" campaign behind it. The Rebecca Black thing was an unfortunate accident, from what I understand ... a kid's rich parents got her a birthday present video, and then it became meme madness. But this seems like a deliberate attempt to create something terrible. Not sure how that benefits anybody ... except maybe for the video producers who can put "viral campaign" on their CV.

You only saw goatse yesterday? In the late 90s I got desensitized to it. Every other link on slashdot went there until they modified the code.

There are so many bad songs it's impossible to pin one down as worst. This thread reminds me of when I worked at Major Telecom. They would send us all kinds of propaganda to get us jazzed about working there or get us to push the services on our friends and family. One day we were sent a song by an exec who did some country-rock on the side. He had written a about how Major Telecom was a great company that was in it to win it and we were survivors. It was called 'We're Still Here', and as a footnote, pretty much everybody I worked with either left voluntarily like myself or were outsourced since then, and Major Telecom got bought by AT&T. It was pretty awful, and it got me wondering how common that sort of thing is. As we saw in 'the Smartest Guys in The Room', companies make all kinds of videos that end up being way funnier unintentionally after the participants commit horrible crimes and screw their employees and others over than they were intended to be. If somebody at JP Morgan Chase could pull off writing a Mit Hamine esque song praising the bank and banking and get that out there to 'reach the young people', that'd be great.

Hot Problems is obviously the work of some Lonely Island wanna-be who wanted to go viral in the cheapest way possible but forgot to try and make it an obvious parody thing. I can appreciate something shamelessness but you should at least try and have it grab some legs.

The Rebecca Black thing is sort of a modern tragedy. I think it's Internet bullying at the worst, in some ways. Some girl got a present to make a song and bad video and it blew up with a lot of professional snarkasaureses making fun of a 13-year-old girl. She's an accident. She wasn't shopping this around to major labels or anything like that in an attempt to become some Katy Perry wanna-be. I also don't think the song is absolutely terrible -- it's more or less a bubblegum pop song with some awful production behind it. I think I have a comment a few clicks back in this thread about how The Roots and Steven Colbert and Jimmy Fallon really deconstructed it and went completely overboard with it and made it completely ridiculous and fun.

Hot Problems is ok, but those girls are lousy singers. Friday had a cute girl who could sing good and a song so catchy and dumb that no one could resist it. We should all aspire to such heights! Rebecca Black took a lot of heat for it but at the end of the day it's a fucking stone cold classic that no one who lived through it will ever forget.

And yeah, Coyote McCloud's WHERE'S THE BEEF still reverberates in my heart.

Definitely awful. My only hesitation is wondering whether this is someone who has serious hopes for a music career or someone like Rebecca Black who was just having fun and unexpectedly found their video go viral. But she is a grown woman so she should have some quality control.

It was the first year of my truck driving career, and I was the hump who drove the trailers full of soup or whatever that other drivers dropped off at our yard  to a grocery chain warehouse.  I would spend hours unloading and this song came blaring on the radio every ten minutes.  "Picture Postcards from LA" and "You Gotta Be" seemed like the only songs the station played.  It was like I was still in college, and the class was What Hell is Like 101.  I posted that video above just by googling, just from the memory, and I haven't heard the song since then (a testament to its awfulness having been forgotten so quickly), but just now for kicks I listened to the first 20 seconds or so and my fight or flight response kicked in.  I had to turn it off.  The worst song.

Blurred Lines as Cosby Show Theme [Garlic Jackson Comedy] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crBNdOREZE0#)

I was asking myself, why this was considered funny or noteworthy and therefore went and watched this:
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft. T.I., Pharrell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDUC1LUXSU#ws)

God this stuff is trash. I didn't know who Robin Thicke was before and I wish I had never found out.
Also there is a clear Pharrell/Neptunes influence on the song, causing me to seize up with bad flashbacks to stuff like this: Snoop Dogg Ft Pharrell - Beautiful HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MQhk53ayeI#) .
The song is therefore just offensively commercially differentiated from other Top40 songs in a totally calculated fashion.

FUUUUUUUUUDGE this munching noise. I know it should be exempt from all "Worst song ever" nominations for being a novelty song but there's nothing fun or happy or loveable about it. It's the sort of thing that playground bullies listened to when they bullied us, and the fact that it seems to be back acts as karmic validation.
