Title: stuff I should watch....
Post by: Andy on February 13, 2009, 10:09:12 PM
There are less and less things that I find watchable on TV.  What should I check out (casually watch) from the last 10 years of so?  I like both versions of The Office, 30 Rock, Spaced, Trailer Park Boys, Arrested Development, etc...

Extras?
Flight of the Conchords?
Anything that's not shit?

casual viewing, please.  nothing I have to pay too much attention to.

Destroyed In Seconds on the Discovery Channel.

You won't necessarily have to pay close attention, but if you're like me, you'll probably want to.

Speaking of that, I finally caught up with the first season of I'm Andy Partridge on dvd recently, and it now rates as the best sitcom ever made in my books.

So I'm pretty geared up to get on board the Saxondale bandwagon as well.

but seriously, folks, if you have ifc then watch IT Crowd. That show is dece.
I thought the last season of Weeds was pretty kickass.
Battlestar Gallactica is a rollercoaster ride of greatness and laughableness.  Pyramid ball, anyone?
MadMen's good if you can handle snail pacing.
Who else thinks they threw the show bible right out the window with season 2 of FOTC to bad effect?
Excited for Eastbound and Down.

I loved FOC Season 1 and this season has been just as funny except when they sing.

If you haven't already watched them ...

The IT Crowd (which airs weekly on IFC)

Summer Heights High (8 episodes of pure gold on HBO.  It's no longer available On Demand, but will probably be on DVD soon)

I'm also told that the precursor to SHH, known as "The Nominees" or "We Can Be Heroes" was pretty great too, though I have no idea how to find it in the States.  Haven't had much luck online, but a girl in Pennsylvania insists that it's brilliant.

Other than that, I am obligated (through friendship) to plug "The Big Bang Theory" on CBS, which I will admit, I do enjoy.

It's not from the last ten years, but if you haven't you should most certainly check out The Larry Sanders Show. It holds up really well and it influenced things like The Office. I don't think most of the seasons are on DVD, but you can find every episode on youtube if you search larry01 larry02 etc.

 I'll second Black Books.

And if you don't mind cartoons, Home Movies and The Venture Bros. are excellent.

On the drama side of things, Friday Night Lights is really great.

You gotta watch Peep Show.  And to stick with the UK Comedy theme, Peter Kay did a 2 hour pisstake special of British Idol, Dancing on Ice, etc etc that is worth watching!!  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1298641/

I thought Extras was a failurepile. S1 had promise, so did S2, but it fell apart and became really unwatchable pretty fast. I never finished the specials either. Mind  you, I'm one of the people who puts UKOffice in my top bestyest shows of all time lists too, so there you go.

Try Peep Show if you haven't yet though, it's also another greatest of all times show I think. Flight of the Conchords is pretty great too, definitely watch it.

I think Extras is good, and I'll second crumbum's assessment of I'm Alan Partridge as the best sitcom ever. Peep Show and Snuff Box are both really nasty. You'd probably like 'em. The British are just funnier than we are.

Flight of the Conchords seems kind of funny, but it's too much of a Mighty Boosh retread for me to bother with. And I think the Mighty Boosh would probably bug you, even though I think it's funny.

Mad Men is good. I just started watching it. Smart enough to be good, but not so demanding that it feels like homework.

I think peep show is really funny but I can't watch it on account of I cannot stand the point of view gimmick.

Oh yeah and you should definitely watch Mad Men. Give it 4 episodes if you don't like it at first. The first few lay it on a little thick, but then the plot starts to unfold and it gets awesome.

It also features curvaceous ladies in flattering dresses.

Monk.  I'll admit that I only started watching it because of Tom, but I ended up liking it a lot.

My favorite is "watch your own business," which isn't even idiomatic English.  I should've thrown a couple of extra "a"s in there so I could pretend I was channeling the Chinatown Italian.

Also, watch Absolutely Fabulous before it gets remade over here.  It is the best.

More than 10 years old, but the original Aeon Flux shorts are fantastic.  Will take you all of an hour to watch them all.

The Hank Azaria show "Huff" that was on Showtime a few years back was surprisingly excellent.

I like Modern Toss.
Look Around You is right up my alley, but my wife makes me turn it off.
East Bound and Down is entertaining so far

There are probably more recent threads on TV shows but this one just felt tight. Ok, anyone else watching "The Americans" on fx? Maybe not great but very very good in my boo. The 2 leads are good. Keri Russell, the girl with the pretty hair from Felicity,  plays cold-hearted well.
