Title: Spike: Permanent Heave-Ho?
Post by: mcphee from the forum on February 26, 2009, 09:10:27 AM
I hate to be an enemy of free speech (such as those people in NYC's invisible boro), but does it seem like Spike has run his course? His refusal to change his game with movie reviews just seems insulting to us, the listeners, and to Tom, the admiral. Does his refusal to take orders earn him a dishonorable discharge? Does the fact that he's been essentially making the same call for three years seem excessive? Or should he be spared the plank for fear of losing gems like "what am I, your bartender?" and "paying for cable? creeping people out?"

It does seem like he's been offered many, many opportunities to improve his game. I'm casting a reluctant "yes". Maybe he needs a time out.

Absolutely not. Spike's refusal to change and his hilarious idea of "preserving the mystique" are part of the charm. Not every call is a home run, but everyone has their down periods, especially when you've logged as many calls as he has. He has been on the receiving end of some of Tom's funniest stuff. I say let him keep calling, though I wouldn't object to his taking a week off every now and then.

He should call in on topic some of the time. It's just too much of the same stuff every week.

Yes. Best Show's not a democracy.

Plus Spike did try to change up his game with that bit about Staten Island and un-American people, which was clearly rehearsed. It's fun watching him try.

Not rehearsed enough ... it fell apart as soon as Tom asked him what the hell he was talking about. Come on, Spike. Try harder.

If hearing from Spike every week leads to the occasional "hooker pratfall" gem, I'm all for it.

I agree, BUT if this poll is simply about the opinions of the FOT and only that, I must cast my "strong yes" vote for a permanent heave-ho.

I wish he'd call randomly.  Then it would be an exciting surprise to hear from him, but at the beginning of the show Tom gets pumped by good calls, like Hulk Hogan.  And Spike is usually pretty hit or miss and usually a long call.

I'm sure that if he started doing the reviews or something it would be better, but if not, maybe just save Spike for the end of the show when Tom has built enough steam to carry the W?

Spike is hilarious, when he isn't trying to be funny. He comes up small when he tries too hard. Just be yourself Spike! You're cannonfodder, not Shecky Greene.

Spike provides moments of sublime comedy, purely by accident.  His refusal to get ANY of Tom's jokes (at his expense), his refusal to bend in any way, shape or form, and his delusion that there's a mystique about him all add up to what I'm convinced is an elaborate scheme that will be hatched one day.

Mark my words.

He's truly nuts.

I had to vote No.  Spike and I start with the cat-of-nine-tails next week, and if I'd voted yes, he'd break my skin for sure.

6-month ban. Just enough to get his act together, maybe get that Blockbuster membership up to date.

Like a sufferer of the Stockholm Syndrome, I voted no.

I don't think he should be permanently heaved ho (I'm counting on Mark's grammar to be correct) but if he's stale on any given night Tom should drop him more quickly

I repeat: try calling on topic sometimes.

It helps to mix things up I think.

But then, I've been called boring before, so I may not be a good judge :)

The Best Show is not a democracy. Tom will let everybody know when Spike has had enough. I personally don't have a strong opinion either way. There have been some great Spike moments and some not so great.

He puts gauze in his mouth before he calls. He thinks it makes him sound like Brando.

This is a great idea.  We don't need Spike to just be there, but if he swings in from time to time with a solid contribution it would have greater impact.

If a permanent heave-ho were to happen, though, I would miss that laugh.

If the Best Show were a person, Spike would be its ugly toenails- kinda nasty, but still a part of the body.
Using that lame example, I say no heave-ho.

I think Spike once a month should give everyone their fix without annoying the hell out of everyone. Plus it would give him time to work on some material.

Though, it does get Tom fired up, which usually bodes well for the remainder of the show...

I do like the Julie-Spike-Fredricks shotgun minute. Get it all out of the system early and push forward.

Material?  What kind of material would he have?  We're talking Spike here, not Paul F Tompkins.  His material, as far as I'm aware, is agreeing to do something for Tom then not doing it, that creepy laugh, and saying that something would ruin the mystique.  Oh yeah, and mentioning "the dungeon."  Yeah they're sometimes funny, but do those things really count as material?

I just wish he would change it up and actually review a movie Tom had asked him to review.  That would be great.  And quite mystique building. hint hint Spike

It doesn't count as material. I was thinking more along the lines of him taking time to perhaps generate some material. The most we've gotten out of him is changing his normal laugh to that creepy laugh.

Snoop Kitty Kat? That is Grade A material. Right up there with "My Son, he doesn't write, he doesn't call, he doesn't fax..."

ZING!
