I didn't see it but I always thought he was unfunny.

How was the house band?

The writing staff is solid, it's just a matter of him selling the jokes.  The Roots are good, I fully expect him to lean on them quite a bit.  It was a first show, he seemed about as nervous as expected, it's not really fair to judge him on these first few weeks of shows, especially since it'll be pretty much impossible for him to match Conan.  Speaking of Conan, that sketch with him in the beginning made me really sad.

I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt for a while.  Conan wasn't that great early on.  I actually have no memory of this, but anyway it's what everyone says.  But then, Conan had no performing experience.  Jimmy Fallon has a track record of kind of sucking.

I haven't watched it yet.  I think Jimmy Fallon kind of dug himself a huge hole on snl, but overall I think he's pretty likeable and funny so hopefully this'll be a good platform for him.

It was better than I expected, but mostly on the strength of Justin Timberlake and the Roots. I'm interested to see what he does when the star power of the guests drops off.

Conan's first show isn't up on YouTube anymore, but Letterman's is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkAfWuubPBs&feature=PlayList&p=45657C58E4EEC597&index=33

I didn't think it was too bad. Some of the jokes went down badly, but they weren't very unfunny. The lick-for-ten bit was silly, but Slow Jammin' the news was really good. I wish his interviews weren't both about himself+guest. Certainly not a terrible first episode.

Still holdin' out for the Van Morrison Variety Two Hours, though. He looked grumpy, shockingly.

Did he sing that song "Madame's Drawers?"

Jimmy Fallon's voice and mannerisms bug me.

you mean Madame George?

or did i just not a get a joke?

but I kinda liked the show. I'll admit I like jimmy fallon I think he's got a kind of self deprecating nervous charm that i think is funny.

i know it annoyed some people but i always liked when he laughed or just gave up in the middle of a joke on SNL.

i think he's got the potential to sort of fail upwards and get alot of comedy out of the fact that his show is 3rd rate and he's following a powerhouse.

It was an aggressively stupid joke based on a real-life mispronounciation.    Just pretend Jimmy Fallon delivered it last night, laughing.

I think the first show is too early to judge. Give him a little while to get into his groove. Then we JUDGE.

I am going to prematurely judge Jimmy Fallon and say the show was not good and never will be good.

The *ahem* urbanness of The Roots is a little uncomfortable.

Did anyone else watch the Letterman clip?  I forgot how great that was.  I don't think a show like that could get made in 2009.  Certainly, Jimmy Fallon is doing more "up the middle" stuff...

I don't like Jimmy Fallon but under the massive weight of expectations put on him he wasn't as awful as I thought he'd be. The second show is wrapping up now and so far his biggest weakness is interviewing the guests.

Penguin Books told me that interviewing really isn't an important part of a late night show.

Re-staging your lame SNL bit with Robert Deniro?  Check.
Re-re-re-re-staging your lame SNL bit with Justin Timberlake?  Check.
Laughing before getting your first line of a sketch out?  Check.

Way to go all out for your first episode, Jimmy.  I could almost hear The Roots second-guessing themselves during "Lick it for Ten."

I disagree. They did a good job on "Slow Jammin' the News" and last nite they provided solid backing for a Bon Jovi fan singing "Dead or Alive". The band is a strong point on a show that, at this point, doesn't have very many strong points.

WavyGravy, haven't you heard that we're living in post-racial America? Nobody sent you that memo?

Also, ?love is a pretty funny guy. They should work him in to some of the comedy bits.
